Development of verified FE simulation method on crimp joint with gasket : A combined experimental and numerical study

When developing drivetrain cooling modules for commercial vehicles, the top priority is the strength of the products. The reason lays within the structural change that companies are undergoing where the warehouses are minimized and the companies are relying on the transportation of commercial vehicles. If a drivetrain cooling module would fail to maintain a targeted temperature range of the drivetrain, there is not long until the vehicle is forced to a stop. At worst, the downtime of commercial vehicles can cause companies to come to a halt as well. Therefore, developing verified FE simulation methods together with strength verification tests, are some of the core activities to ensure the strength of the cooling modules before implementation in vehicles. One of the methods that have not been sufficiently verified regards how to perform structural FEA on a crimp joint with a gasket. A crimp joint is established through a hemming process, where the aluminium header tabs are crimped over the polyamide tank, creating a watertight seal together with a gasket. The objective of this master’s thesis is to verify the existing simulation methods of the crimp joint and determine the margin of error with respect to strains. The objective of this thesis is also to develop a verified FE simulation method with a lower margin of error compared to the existing methods. The verification of the methods has been conducted through a comparison between numerical results and an experimental stress analysis, where the strain located on the header is measured with strain gauges in a pressure pulsation rig. The average margin of error found on the three existing methods of simulating the crimp joint was 39,7%, 13,4%, and 11,5% located on the outer bottom dimensioning radius of the crimp joint at a pressure of 100 kPa. However, the method used to determine the margin of error was found to be invalid, but the margin of error is only slightly affected by the verification method where the existing methods still are insufficiently representing the crimp joint. The method of determining the margin of error was then corrected for the development of the new method to represent the crimp joint in the FE model. The developed method in this thesis has an average margin of error of 6,9% at 100, 160, 220, and 260 kPa. / Vid utveckling av kylarmoduler för drivlinor som appliceras i kommersiella fordon, är högsta prioritet att säkerhetsställa hållfastheten hos produkterna. Anledningen ligger kring den strukturomvandling som företag genomgår där storleken på lagerlokaler minskar och företagen väljer att förlita sig på transporterna som utförs av kommersiella fordon istället. Ifall en kylarmodul inte skulle klara av att bibehålla ett bestämt temperaturintervall hos drivlinan så dröjer det inte länge förens fordonet tvingas att stanna. I värsta fall kan fordonets stillestånd påverka ett företag att tvingas stanna i väntan. Därför är utveckling av FE simuleringsmetoder tillsammans med utmattningstest, några av de kärnaktiviteter som utförs för att säkerhetsställa hållfastheten av kylarmodulerna innan de implementeras i fordon. En av de metoder som ännu inte blivit tillräckligt verifierat gäller hur man utför FEA på ett falsförband med packning. Falsförbandet skapas genom en falsningsprocess där ändplåten av aluminium falsas över polyamidtanken, vilket skapar ett vattentätt förband med hjälp av packningen. Omfattningen av detta examensarbete gäller att verifiera de existerande simuleringsmetoderna av falsförbandet och bestämma felmarginalen med avseende på töjningar. Omfattningen av examensarbetet innefattar även ett utvecklingsarbete av en ny FE simuleringsmetod med en lägre felmarginal jämfört med de existerande metoderna. Verifieringen av metoderna sker genom en jämförelse mellan de numeriska resultaten och en experimentell spänningsanalys där töjningen på ändplåten är uppmätt med hjälp av trådtöjningsgivare i en tryckpulsationsrigg. Den genomsnittliga felmarginalen av de tre existerande metoderna för att simulera falsförbandet var 37,9%, 13,4%, och 11,5% vid den nedre dimensionerande yttre radien på falsförbandet vid ett tryck på 100 kPa. Den använda metoden för att bestämma felmarginalen upptäcktes senare vara felaktig, men det resulterar endast i små förändringar av den bestämda felmarginalen, de existerande simuleringsmetoderna är fortfarande sedda som otillräckliga. Metoden för att bestämma felmarginalen korrigerades sedan inför utvecklandet av den nya FE simuleringsmetoden av falsförbandet. Den utvecklade metoden i detta examensarbete har en genomsnittlig felmarginal på 6,9% vid 100, 160, 220 och 260 kPa.

Golvvärme eller radiatorer : Vattenburna värmesystem i flerbostadshus / Underfloor heating or radiators : Waterborne heating systems in apartment blocks

I flerbostadshus är radiatorer det vanligaste uppvärmningssystemet. Inte alls många har golvvärme i deras lägenheter. I dagens nyproduktion av flerbostadshus bygger man för det mesta husen med radiatorer och har elburen golvvärme som komfortvärme i badrummen. I villor är det däremot mycket vanligare att man använder sig av vattenburen golvvärme över större delen av huset. Detta examensarbete undersöker varför det inte används golvvärme lika mycket i flerbostadshus, det undersöker även intresset för privatpersoner att ha golvvärme i lägenheter samt om dessa personer isåfall hade kunnat tänka sig betala mer pengar om de fick vattenburen golvvärme installerat vid nyproduktion.Resultaten har fåtts fram genom en enkätundersökning samt intervjuer där vi intervjuat kunniga inom området. Våra resultat visar att nästan 40% av de enkät intervjuade hade velat ha endast golvvärme som uppvärmningssystem medan ungefär 55% hade velat ha både radiatorer och golvvärme som ett gemensamt uppvärmningssystem. De flesta hade då velat ha golvvärme i bland annat toalett, badrum, hall, kök, vardagsrum och sovrum. Resultaten visar även att nästan hälften av de enkät besvarande hade kunnat tänka sig betala mer för en bostad med golvvärme medan den större delen av den andra hälften var osäkra och förmodligen behövde mer tid för att tänka. Resultaten gällande varför man inte använder vattenburen golvvärme i lägenheten lika ofta som man använder radiatorer visade sig variera lite mellan de intervjuade vilket vi tror har med erfarenheter att göra men att ett golvvärmesystem var installationsmässigt dyrare än ett radiatorsystem verkade vara huvudsaken. / In prefabricated apartment blocks the most common thing people have in their homes is radiators as their waterborne heating system but very few have underfloor heating in their apartments. Nowadays the most usual thing to do is to install radiators and have underfloor electric heating in the bathrooms. Most residentials however usually have waterborne underfloor heating across the bigger part of the house. This report digs into why underfloor heating isn’t being used as often in apartment buildings, it also investigates people’s interest to have underfloor heating in apartment buildings plus if they then would be interested in paying more for a new apartment with waterborne underfloor heating.The outcome from our results has been achieved through a survey and interviews where we have questioned competent persons within the sector. Our results show that 40% of the people in the survey would like to have only underfloor heating as their waterborne system while 55% of the people would like to have a combined system with both radiators and underfloor heating. Most of them preferred to have underfloor heating in their toilets, bathrooms, entrance hall, kitchen, living room and bedroom. The results also show that almost half the persons in the survey could pay more money for a place with underfloor heating while the bigger part of the other half weren’t sure and probably needed more time to think. Our outcome on why waterborne underfloor heating in apartment buildings isn’t being used as often as radiators showed to differ between the interviewed persons which we assume have to do with their different backgrounds and experience but the main reason seemed to do with the part that a waterborne underfloor heating system in an installation point of view is more expensive than a radiator system.

In the beginning of the thesis, the different designs of piston engine cooling systems are described for both aircrafts and automobiles. Other sections outline the determination of the coolers characteristics and describe the different test sections applicable for the characteristics measurement. The test section built at the Institute of the aerospace engineering is described as well. Practical part of the thesis describes the calibration of the test section. The measurements of the specific coolers were compared with the CFD simulation of two models - the simplified cooler model and cooler element model. Additionally, the measurements were compared with results obtained at specialized coolers testing facility.

Low Cost Direction Finding with the Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Radiator (ESPAR) Antenna

Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment; School of Electrical and Information System; MSC Dissertation / In this paper, the Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Radiator (ESPAR) antenna, developed by the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR) in Japan was analyzed to determine its feasibility as a low cost direction finding (DF) system. Simulations of the antenna were performed in SuperNEC and Matlab was used to determine the direction of arrival (DOA) using the Reactance Domain multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Results show the ideal configuration has 6 parasitic elements with a diameter of 0.5 . Up to 5 periodic, uncorrelated signals spread 360° in azimuth and above 45° elevation produce sharp peaks in the MUSIC spectra. Azimuth separations of only 2° at 40 dB are resolvable while signals arriving with 25% full power are still detectable. For the DOA to be resolved the radiation pattern should be asymmetrical and hence the reactance set should have a range of unequal values. Comparative results show that the 6 element ESPAR offers excellent overall performance despite the reduction in cost and is comparable in performance to the 6 element uniform linear array.

Der Aufbau und die erste Nutzung eines kompakten Flugzeitsystems zur energiedispersiven Untersuchung der Wechselwirkung von schnellen Neutronen mit Materialien sind Inhalt eines Vernetzungsprojektes des Forschungszentrums Rossendorf, an dem auch die Technische Universität Dresden im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen DFG-Projektes mitarbeitet. Die geplanten Flugzeit-Experimente mit gepulsten Neutronen werden an der Strahlungsquelle ELBE durchgeführt werden. Erste Ergebnisse zur Entwicklung eines Neutronen-Produktionstargets werden vorgestellt. Mit Hilfe von Strahlungstransport- und Finite-Elemente-Programmen wurden die Verteilungen der Energiefreisetzung des von der Strahlungsquelle ELBE genutzten Elektronenstrahls und der Temperatur im Neutronen-Radiator sowie die zu erwartenden Teilchenspektren und -flüsse am Messplatz berechnet. Überlegungen zur Entwicklung des Strahlfängers werden diskutiert.

Disertační práce je zaměřena na kovové a polymerní výměníky tepla. Hlavním předmětem zkoumání je optimalizace teplosměnných ploch za účelem zvýšení účinnosti výměníku tepla. Tyto cíle byly dosaženy experimentálně a numericky pomocí modelování v ANSYS. Na základě dosažených výsledků byla rozpracována technologie křížového navíjení polymerních výměníků z dutých vláken. Experimentální zařízení původně určené pro navíjení tlakových nádrží bylo modifikované pro automatizovanou výrobu polymerních výměníků z dutých vláken, ježto může být použita při jejich masové výrobě. Tato práce se také zabývala výměníky tepla pro klimatizační systémy. Byly zkoumány možnosti využití polymerních výměníků z dutých vláken v těchto systémech. Mimo jiné byla provedena studie vlivu cyklického tepelného zatížení standardního kovového žebrovaného tepelného výměníku.
