Padrão de frequência compacto / Compact frequency standardStella Torres Muller 30 April 2010 (has links)
We present some relevant aspects for the construction and characterization of a compact primary frequency standard. In this system, the atomic ensemble is prepared with a magnetooptical trap. Once a significant number of cold atoms is obtained, the laser beams are turned off and, during the free expansion, the cloud is submitted to a sequence of two microwave pulses, characterizing the well-known Ramsey method. The microwave pulses are applied in a microwave cavity that was sculpted inside the vacuum chamber. All the working cycle takes place into this cavity. When the atoms are interrogated by two pulses of τ = 1 ms separated by Τ = 8 ms, the linewidth of the central fringe is 52 Hz and a short-term stability 10-13 is observed. Some frequency shifts were evaluated.

Chafariz atômico de Cs 133 / Cs 133 Atomic FountainRenato Ferracini Alves 30 March 2012 (has links)
This paper describes the recent developments of the Atomic Fountain located at the São Carlos Physics Institute. It provides a very high resolution frequency (and time) reference. This is achieved locking an electronic oscillator, based on a quartz crystal, to an atomic resonance of a cold atomic sample. Our laboratory uses the 133Cs atom, using as the referenced transition that corresponds to the two hyperfine energy levels of the ground state. The operating cycle comprises a stage of laser trapping atoms or optical pumping, so that all atoms are within the same atomic state. These atoms are then launched optically against gravity through a microwave cavity. In ballistic trajectory and free from external interference, the set of atoms undergoes a change of state, depending on the power and frequency of the microwave signal injected into the cavity. This transition probability is the error signal used to lock the microwave generator supplying the cavity in a closed loop. The best result obtained in this experiment was a stability of 5x10-12τ-1/2 resulting from signal with a 3 Hz half width (FWHM) of the central fringe. We also provide a preliminary assessment of the main frequency shifts and an analysis of spatial interaction of atoms with the microwave field.

Espectroscopia Ramsey em um chafariz atômico / Ramsey Spectroscopy in an atomic fountainAida Bebeachibuli 28 November 2007 (has links)
We present some relevant aspects for the realization of a 133Cs fountain, intended to operate as a primary frequency standard to realize the definition of the second. The main goal of this work is the optimization of the experimental setup of the atomic fountain in its most critical parts: the interaction region and the detection system. Furthermore, the several phases of the optical manipulation which concern the operation cycle of an atomic fountain were also optimized. These procedures allowed us to increase the signal to noise ratio in the detection signal. When the launching velocity is about 3.39 m/s, the atoms reach the apogee about 60 cm above the capture region and spend 360 ms in the free flight zone. The atomic ensemble temperature in the detection region is about 15.5K and the population difference between the two fundamental level is measured through the Ramsey fringe with a linewidth of 1.4 Hz. This linewidth, allied to the obtained S/N resulted in the measured short-term stability of 5.18×1012. Some frequency shift as the black body radiation shift, gravitational shift, second order Doppler shift and second order Zeeman shift were measured.

Metrické prostory se vzdálenostmi z pologrupy / Semigroup-valued metric spacesKonečný, Matěj January 2019 (has links)
The structural Ramsey theory is a field on the boundary of combinatorics and model theory with deep connections to topological dynamics. Most of the known Ramsey classes in finite binary symmetric relational language can be shown to be Ramsey by utilizing a variant of the shortest path completion (e.g. Sauer's S-metric spaces, Conant's generalised metric spaces, Braunfeld's Λ-ultrametric spaces or Cherlin's metrically homogeneous graphs). In this thesis we explore the limits of the shortest path completion. We offer a unifying framework - semigroup-valued metric spaces - for all the aforementioned Ramsey classes and study their Ramsey expansions and EPPA (the extension property for partial automorphisms). Our results can be seen as evidence for the importance of studying the completion problem for amalgamation classes and have some further applications (such as the stationary independence relation). As a corollary of our general theorems, we reprove results of Hubička and Nešetřil on Sauer's S-metric spaces, results of Hubička, Nešetřil and the author on Conant's generalised metric spaces, Braunfeld's results on Λ-ultrametric spaces and the results of Aranda et al. on Cherlin's primitive 3-constrained metrically homogeneous graphs. We also solve several open problems such as EPPA for Λ-ultrametric...

The ethnobotany and phenology of plants in and adjacent to two riparian habitats in southeastern Arizona.Adams, Karen Rogers. January 1988 (has links)
Two riparian habitats in southeastern Arizona provide the setting for a study of 127 plants useful to human foragers. A view of plant part availability is based on annual phenological profiles, and on historic and prehistoric records of plant use. Food choice is limited in March and April, but high August through November. Riparian plants also offer numerous non-food resources. Trees and shrubs serve more needs in relation to number of available species than do perennial herbs (including grasses) and annuals. Southwestern ethnographic literature hints that certain native taxa (Panicum, Physalis, Populus, Salix, Typha and Vitis) might receive special care. Inherent qualities of parts, coupled with ethnographic records of preparation and use, provide a basis for speculation on which parts might survive in an ancient record. Most are expected to disintegrate in open sites. Parts sought for different needs can enter a dwelling via diverse routes that produce confusingly similar archaeological debris. Modern experiments to wash pollen from 14 separate harvests permit evaluation of plant fruit and leaves as pollen traps, to help interpret pollen recovered from ancient dwellings. High amounts of Berberis, Rumex and Ribes pollen, sometimes in clumps or as tetrads, travel on harvested fruit. Arctostaphylos, Monarda, Oxalis, Rhus, Rhamnus, Vitis and Juniperus parts carry lower amounts. Quercus and Gramineae pollen grains travel on parts of other taxa, as well as on their own fruit. The phenological profiles offer insight into group life-form activities in response to local temperature and precipitation trends. Rising and maximum temperatures coincide with intense vegetative and reproductive activity for trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals. Increased levels of precipitation coincide with maximum flowering and fruiting of herbaceous perennials and fall annuals. Limited data on six taxa from Utah generally agrees with observations in this study, suggesting strong genetic control in the phenology of some riparian taxa.

Horloge atomique Cs à piégeage cohérent de population avec protocole d’interrogation Auto-Balanced Ramsey / Coherent population trapping Cs cell atomic clock with Auto-Balanced Ramsey interrogation protocolCoget, Grégoire 12 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis reports a high-performance Cs vapor cell atomic based on coherent population trapping (CPT). This clock combines a DFB diode laser (895 nm, Cs D1 line), a fibred electro-optical modulator, an acousto-optical modulator, a Michelson system, FPGA-based low noise electronics and a N2-Ar buffer gas filled Cs vapor cell. The clock is based on an optimized CPT pumping scheme, named push-pull optical pumping (PPOP), allowing the detection of high-contrast CPT resonances. The clock uses a novel pulsed interrogation protocol named Auto-Balanced Ramsey (ABR). This method is based on the extraction of two error signals derived from two successive Ramsey sequences with different dark periods. The ABR-CPT protocol, improved further with symmetrization (SABR-CPT), allows a drastic reduction of light-shifts effects, yielding in particular to reduce the sensitivity of the clock frequency to laser power variations by a factor 80, in comparison with a standard Ramsey-CPT interrogation. This clock CPT demonstrates a fractional frequency stability of 2 10-13 τ -1/2, reaching the record level (for this kind of clock) of 2.5 10-15 at 10 000 s. Annex laser spectroscopy studies in Cs microfabricated cells were performed in this thesis. We shall note the preliminary demonstration of a laser frequency-stabilized using dual-frequency sub-Doppler spectroscopy in a Cs microcell, exhibiting a fractional frequency stability better than 2 10-12 at 1 s. These performances are 10 times better than those of microwave CPT-based chip-scale atomic clocks.

If there are exceptions, it is still a rule : a probabilistic understanding of conditionalsGeiger, Sonja Maria January 2007 (has links)
Numerous recent publications on the psychological meaning of “if” have proposed a probabilistic interpretation of conditional sentences. According to the proponents of probabilistic approaches, sentences like “If the weather is nice, I will be at the beach tomorrow” (or “If p, then q” in the abstract version) express a high probability of the consequent (being at the beach), given the antecedent (nice weather). When people evaluate conditional sentences, they assumingly do so by deriving the conditional probability P(q|p) using a procedure called the Ramsey test. This is a contradicting view to the hitherto dominant Mental Model Theory (MMT, Johnson-Laird, 1983), that proposes conditional sentences refer to possibilities in the world that are represented in form of mental models.
Whereas probabilistic approaches gained a lot of momentum in explaining the interpretation of conditionals, there is still no conclusive probabilistic account of conditional reasoning. This thesis investigates the potential of a comprehensive probabilistic account on conditionals that covers the interpretation of conditionals as well as conclusion drawn from these conditionals when used as a premise in an inference task.
The first empirical chapter of this thesis, Chapter 2, implements a further investigation of the interpretation of conditionals. A plain version of the Ramsey test as proposed by Evans and Over (2004) was tested against a similarity sensitive version of the Ramsey test (Oberauer, 2006) in two experiments using variants of the probabilistic truth table task (Experiments 2.1 and 2.2). When it comes to decide whether an instance is relevant for the evaluation of a conditional, similarity seems to play a minor role. Once the decision about relevance is made, believability judgments of the conditional seem to be unaffected by the similarity manipulation and judgments are based on frequency of instances, in the way predicted by the plain Ramsey test.
In Chapter 3 contradicting predictions of the probabilistic approaches on conditional reasoning of Verschueren et al (2005), Evans and Over (2004) and Oaksford & Chater (2001) are tested against each other. Results from the probabilistic truth table task modified for inference tasks supports the account of Oaksford and Chater (Experiment 3.1). A learning version of the task and a design with every day conditionals yielded results unpredicted by any of the theories (Experiments 3.2-3.4). Based on these results, a new probabilistic 2-stage model of conditional reasoning is proposed.
To preclude claims that the use of the probabilistic truth table task (or variants thereof) favors judgments reflecting conditional probabilities, Chapter 4 combines methodologies used by proponents of the MMT with the probabilistic truth table task. In three Experiments (4.1 -4.3) it could be shown for believability judgments of the conditional and inferences drawn from it, that causal information about counterexamples only prevails, when no frequencies of exceptional cases are present. Experiment 4.4 extends these findings to every day conditionals. A probabilistic estimation process based on frequency information is used to explain results on all tasks. The findings confirm with a probabilistic approach on conditionals and moreover constitute an explanatory challenge for the MMT.
In conclusion of all the evidence gathered in this dissertation it seems justified to draw the picture of a comprehensive probabilistic view on conditionals quite optimistically. Probability estimates not only explain the believability people assign to a conditional sentence, they also explain to what extend people are willing to draw conclusions from those sentences.

How do rabbits help to integrate teaching of mathematics and informatics?Andžāns, Agnis, Rācene, Laila 11 April 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Many countries are reporting of difficulties in exact education at schools: mathematics, informatics, physics etc. Various methods are proposed to awaken and preserve students’ interest in these disciplines. Among them, the simplification, accent on applications, avoiding of argumentation (especially in mathematics) etc. must be mentioned. As one of reasons for these approaches the growing amount of knowledge/skills to be acquired at school is often mentioned. In this paper we consider one of the possibilities to integrate partially teaching of important chapters of discrete mathematics and informatics not reducing the high educational standards. The approach is based on the identification and mastering general combinatorial principles underlying many topics in both disciplines. A special attention in the paper is given to the so-called “pigeonhole principle” and its generalizations. In folklore, this principle is usually formulated in the following way: “if there are n + 1
rabbits in n cages, you can find a cage with at least two rabbits in it“. Examples of appearances of this principle both in mathematics and in computer science are considered.
