The Effects of Cold Water Immersion on Fractioned Response Time

Objectives: Quantify the effects of cold water immersion of the ankle on fractioned response time of the dominant lower limb. Design and Setting: A 2x2x5x5 crossover design with repeated measures on time and treatment directed data collection. The independent variables were gender, treatment, time (pretreatment, and post 15 seconds, 3 minutes 6 minutes and 9 minutes) and trial (5 trials for each time group). Response time (Tresp), reaction time (Treac), trial and surface temperature were measurement variables. Subjects: Thirty-six subjects, 18 females and 18 males were recruited from a physically active volunteer college student population. Measurements: Fractioned response time was tested following a 20 minute treatment. Response time and Treac were recorded by the reaction timer, and Tmov was calculated by taking the difference between Tresp and Treac. For each time/subject the high and low Tresp were discarded and the middle three trials were averaged and used for statistical analysis. A 2x2x5 ANOVA was used to determine overall differences between gender, treatment and time followed by Newman-Keuls multiple comparison tests. Results: Males were faster than females for Tresp, Treac and Tmov. Movement time and Tresp were slower with cold water immersion, but Treac was unaffected. Movement time and Tresp were fastest pretreatment, and slowest during the post 15-second time group. Though both Tmov and Tresp progressively sped up from the post 15-second through the post 9-minute time group, they did not return to pretreatment values when data collection discontinued. Conclusions: Immersing the dominant ankle in cold water for 20 minutes increases Tmov of the dominant lower limb; thereby increasing fractioned response time (Tresp).

Examining the Tools Used to Infer Models of Lexical Activation: Eye-tracking, Mouse-tracking, and Reaction Time

Most models of auditory word recognition describe the activation of lexical items in a continuous and graded manner. Much evidence in favor of these models comes from the visual-world paradigm, using either eye fixations or computer cursor trajectories as dependent measures. In particular, Spivey, Grosjean and Knoblich (2005) relied on their observation of unimodality in the distribution of cursor trajectories to argue in favor of a single cognitive process consistent with a continuous model of lexical activation. The present study addresses two questions: (1) whether the logic of inferring the number of cognitive processes from distributional analyses can be extended to a different dependent variable – reaction times, and (2) how robust the distribution of cursor trajectories is to changes in cursor speed (mouse gain). In Experiment 1, eye movements and reaction times were recorded in a visual-world paradigm and reaction times were modeled using ex-Gaussian curve-fitting. Participants responded slower to trials with a phonological competitor presented alongside the target than to trials with a control image presented alongside the target. Crucially, this difference was manifested as a shifting of the distribution rather than as a skewing of the distribution and lends additional support for a continuous model of lexical activation. Experiment 2 measured eye and mouse movements concurrently in a similar visual-world task to investigate the relationship between these two dependent measures at the level of the individual trial. In addition, Experiment 2 manipulated the speed of the cursor (mouse gain) between subjects. The low mouse gain served to reduce the effect of phonological competition. Moreover, the shape of the distribution of cursor trajectories across phonological competitor and control conditions was indistinct with low mouse gain, while the shape of the distributions across the two conditions differed with high mouse gain. This effect of mouse gain shows that the distribution of cursor trajectories is not robust to changes in mouse gain. Moreover, it raises questions about the strength of the linking hypothesis necessary to interpret the distribution of cursor trajectories.

Latent <em>Toxoplasma gondii</em> Infection Moderates the Association Between the C677T MTHFR Polymorphism and Cognitive Function in U.S. Adults

Sufficient blood concentrations of folate and the products from its metabolism are necessary for several cellular functions. The C677T MTHFR polymorphism, present in over half of the U.S. population, reduces the efficiency of folate metabolism and has been linked to the onset of multiple psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. The intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii can infect the human brain and is associated with increased prevalence of psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. In vitro studies have found that Toxoplasma gondii may salvage unmetabolized folate from host cells. Since the C677T MTHFR polymorphism and infection by Toxoplasma gondii both affect folate metabolism or availability, I used data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to test the hypothesis that latent toxoplasmosis and the C677T MTHFR polymorphism interact to predict worse cognitive functioning in U.S. adults. I found a statistically significant interaction effect between Toxoplasma gondii infection and the C677T MTHFR polymorphism in predicting performance on a test of reaction time. Subjects who were not infected with Toxoplasma gondii experienced declines in reaction time with the presence of one or two alleles for the C677T MTHFR polymorphism. However, this association was reversed for subjects who were seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii. No interaction effects were observed when predicting performance on a test of processing speed or a test of short term memory. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the co-occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii infection and the C677T MTHFR polymorphism maybe associated with improved reaction time.

Effect of Acute L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine (Sustamine) and Electrolyte Ingestion on Cognitive Function, Multiple Object Tracking and Reaction Time Following Prolonged Exercise

Changes in physiological function occurring during a body water deficit may result in significant decrements in performance, cognitive function and fine motor control during exercise. This may be due to the magnitude of the body water deficit. Rehydration strategies are important to prevent these deleterious effects in performance. The purpose of this study was to examine the changes before and after prolonged exercise of an alanine-glutamine dipeptide (AG) on cognitive function and reaction time. Twelve male endurance-trained runners (age: 23.5 [plus or minus] 3.7 y; height: 175.5 [plus or minus] 5.4 cm; weight: 70.7 [plus or minus] 7.6 kg) participated in this study. Participants were asked to run on a treadmill at 70% of their predetermined VO2max for 1 h and then run at 90% of VO2max until volitional exhaustion on four separate days (T1-T4). T1 was a dehydration trial and T2-T4 were all different hydration modalities (electrolyte drink, electrolyte drink with a low dose of AG, electrolyte drink with a high dose of AG, respectively) where the participants drank 250 mL every 15 min. Before and after each hour run, cognitive function and reaction tests were administered. Hopkins Magnitude Based Inferences were used to analyze cognitive function and reaction time data. Results showed that physical reaction time was likely faster for the low dose trial than the high dose trial. Dehydration had a possible negative effect on the number of hits in 60-sec compared to both the low and high dose trials. Comparisons between only the electrolyte drink and the high dose ingestion appeared to be possibly negative. Analysis of lower body quickness indicates that performance in both the low and high dose trials were likely improved (decreased) in comparison to the dehydration trial. Multiple object tracking analysis indicated a possible greater performance for dehydration and low dose compared to only the electrolyte drink, while there was a likely greater performance in multiple object tracking for the high dose trial compared to consumption of the electrolyte drink only. The serial subtraction test was possibly greater in the electrolyte drink trial compared to dehydration. Rehydration with the alanine-glutamine dipeptide during an hour run at a submaximal intensity appears to maintain or enhance subsequent visual reaction time in both upper and lower body activities compared to a no hydration trial. The combination of the alanine-glutamine dipeptide may have enhanced fluid and electrolyte absorption from the gut and possibly into skeletal tissue to maintain neuromuscular performance.
