Taiwanese first year university EFL learners' metacognitive awareness and use of reading strategies in learning to read : proficiency levels and text types

Liu, Ping-yu January 2013 (has links)
Although studies on L2 learning strategies are a major strand of second language research, recent research has shifted its focus onto language learners’ metacognitive awareness and use of strategies. Previous studies shed important light on the amelioration in L2 educational practices, but research on learners’ metacognition in the reading process in EFL contexts remains insufficient, especially at the university level in terms of the emic view of the participants studied in Taiwan. Based on an interpretive stance, this exploratory case study aimed at probing 12 Taiwanese first year university EFL learners’ metacognitive awareness and use of reading strategies during their strategic reading process, and the relationship with proficiency levels and texts of both the narrative and the expository type. This study relies on the think aloud and immediately retrospective protocols of 6 high proficient and 6 low proficient readers as the principal sources of data. The think aloud protocols and the immediately retrospective interviews were transcribed and subjected to content analysis by means of coding them. Taiwanese first year university EFL readers’ metacognitive awareness and use of reading strategies were then analysed and interpreted from a broad metacognitive perspective within the information processing model in terms of strategy application for reading comprehension problem-solving. The findings revealed that the participants demonstrated an awareness and control of their cognitive activities while reading. The strategies they employed were grouped into the categories of supporting reading strategies (SRSs), cognitive reading strategies (CRSs), and metacognitive reading strategies (MRSs). The study found that these learners’ metacognitive awareness and use of reading strategies in learning to read were closely related to L2 proficiency. The low proficient readers’ unfamiliarity with L2 is a hindrance to their reading comprehension which, in turn, disabled them from using the strategies appropriately and effectively. Furthermore, the high proficient readers outperformed their low proficient counterparts in terms of both the quality and quantity of strategies used. Both groups did not use the same strategy types. The findings also revealed that certain types of reading strategy were used differently due to the texts of the narrative and the expository type across the different ability levels. The existing literature on metacognitive awareness and use of reading strategies in learning to read is discussed and pedagogical implications for teachers of L2 reading are offered. These implications include suggestions made for providing learners with explicit reading and strategy instruction and texts with different structure in relation to strategy use. Finally, the limitations of the current research study and recommendations for further research were stated.

The appropriation of Digital Technologies (DTs) in the pedagogical practice, by elementary and junior high teachers in municipal schools of Juiz de Fora, and the possible articulation of such practice with the Portuguese Language Curricular Proposal for that level, considering the basic process of reading and writing and process of literacy constitutes the focus of this research. Its organization is guided by a qualitative research based on Vygotsky's theory of social construction of knowledge (1995, 1996, 1998, 2007), and Bakhtin'senunciative theory of language (1992, 1999, 2003). In addition to these theories, the groundwork is anchored in studies by Soares (2002, 2004), Freitas (2008, 2009, 2010 and others) and Rojo (2010, 2012), Lévy (1999), Bevilaqua (2013) and Kenski (2012a, 2012b). The interview, the participant observation and the questionnaire are the chosen instruments for data collection once they provide a dialogical relationship between the researcher and the researched ones. Moreover, it was added the documental analysis of the Portuguese Language Curricular Proposal. The research verified that teachers have appropriated DTs in their pedagogical practice as cultural instruments of current learning and developed a work hoping to teach the alphabet with literacy by using DTs.The practices of the teachers who are subjects of the research were aligned with the purpose of building a school curriculum in line with the new social tendencies of a technologized society.Teachers propose varied activities with the intention of working on the instrumental use of technologies or, more broadly, for pedagogical purposes, in which the objectives go beyond the instrumental use, being related to the curricular contents that are expected.Of all the mentioned practices, the game is prominent in the Computer Laboratory (CL), allowing the construction of knowledge in different areas and greater appropriation of the digital universe. Planning and material and human resources were identified as fundamental elements for the work with DTs, being pointed as obstacles to a good practice, the difficulty of connecting to the Internet, the insufficient condition and quantity of equipment and the function diversion of the CL teacher. The teacher responsible for the CL of the school has its practice focused on the teaching-learning process of the students, but also the teacher is a trainer of their peers, recognized by them, regarding the use of DTs. The pedagogical practice developed in the CL is influenced by the orientations of the Portuguese Language Curriculum Proposal, according to the conception of the literacies (multiple), although it supplants the last one, concerning the construction of a work that goes towards the perspective of multiliteracies. According with this direction, it became evident the importance of continuing the work with the semiotic multiplicity of the texts and also investing, more effectively, in the work with the populations cultural multiplicity, in order to redesign the teaching-learning process

L'adquisició de la lectura en una mostra d'alumnes de segon a cinquè d'Educació Primària

Vallès Majoral, Eduard 18 June 2004 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis has been to do a longitudinal study of reading acquisition (catalan and castilian) with children from the second to the fith year of primary school. The sample used was a group of 214 students (101 girls and 113 boys) studying in a State Catalan school and the study was carried out using the results obtained in the Proves Psicopedagògiques d'Aprenentatges Instrumentals (P.P.A.I.; Canals, Carbonell, Estaún and Añanos, 1988) given at the beginning and at the end of each school year. The P.PA.I. test the speed and accuracy of reading decodification through the reading of different texts for each course and also reading comprehension through different exercises for each of the courses (ordering sentences, executing reading orders, answering questions about the content of a text...)The following results were obtained:-The majority of the sample, instructed in catalan independently of the language most spoken at home (catalan or castilian) developed the reading abilities (catalan and castilian) initiated in previous years progressively and similarly, automatizing the process of reading decodification at the end of the fifth year.-The reading speed nearly tripled going from 40 words per minute initially till 130 words per minute at the end of the fifth year.-The reading accuracy also increased and a the end of the fifth year most students were able to read without hardly making any errors of accuracy.-Reading comprehension also increased and most students were progressively able to succeed in more complex reading comprehension activities.-In general, the development of reading abilities was pretty similar in both sexes but at the end of the fifth year there were more boys with a low level of decodification and/or comprehension and more girls than boys with a higher level of decodification and/or comprehension.-The subjects with a mid level of decodification and/or comprehension in the second level were the ones who remained in the same level in the fifth year. On the other hand, the subjects who showed extreme levels (high or low) developed in a more variable way.-We also observed that the subjects who developed fair abilities of reading decodification did not necessarily develop a good level of reading comprehension. On the contrary,a good level of comprehension did not always correlate with a fair level of decodification.-After classifying the sample in three subgroups (high, medium and low) through the results obtained in decodification and comprehension in catalan from the last assessment in the fifth year we observed quite paralell evolutions between the subgroups in speed and comprehension, each of the subgroups maintaining in the same level along the different courses. But there was a 6.54% of the sample with difficult reading comprehension in catalan that at the end of the fifth year showed an important decrease in reading comprehension compared to the first assessment given at the beginning of the fifth year.
