Madrid Modernista: Espacios Urbanos Madrilenos en la Literatura Bohemia del Modernismo Espanol

This study offers an analysis of the interaction between urban spaces and bohemian literature in Madrid around 1900. I argue that bohemianism and bohemian literature are actually part of a very well structured cultural discourse--a discourse of social resistance--and must be studied as such. At the same time, the obvious urban nature of this phenomenon is a deciding aspect of it. In order to know how the bohemian discourse evolved in Madrid from 1850s to 1920s--from Realism to Modernismo--we have to study the core and reciprocal relationship between bohemianism and the city. This issue has not yet been explored within Hispanism, in spite of the fact that it provides a very useful perspective for considering the period as a synthesis of intellectual and artistic matters.In my dissertation I engage the essential aspects of bohemianism in the turn of the twentieth century Spanish literature. I focus on the characterization and use of space in the bohemian discourse of Peninsular Modernismo. My starting point is the description and characterization of such a discourse as it has been constructed, analyzing how it takes form in a variety of different kind of texts. I study the construction and evolution of its "cartographic imaginary" (David Harvey), an image of the city that bohemian literature uses to resist the bourgeois order imposed on Madrid's urban spaces and the capitalistic process that supports it. I argue that bohemianism was taken by the peninsular version of Hispanic Modernismo as its central aesthetic discourse. Consequently, and because of the subaltern and marginal nature of it, Modernismo could never position itself at the central stage of the 1900s Spanish culture.

O tema principal de nosso trabalho é o estudo de três mulheres na obra de Eça de Queirós: Luísa, Amélia e Maria Eduarda. Para isso, é preciso situar o tempo e o contexto em que essas mulheres, divididas entre o desejo e o dever, se inserem. A leitura de alguns pensadores do século XIX foi fundamental para compreendermos os principais aspectos da sociedade portuguesa do século XIX: a família, a educação, o ócio e a ausência de papel social da mulher. Feito isso, foi necessário recorrermos aos estudos biográficos para compreendermos a importância e o lugar que essas mulheres tiveram na vida do escritor. / The main subject of our work is the study of three women in the work of Eça de Queirós: Luísa, Amélia e Maria Eduarda. To do this, it is necessary to consider the time and enviroment in which, between the desire and obligation, those women live. The reading of some thinkers of the XIX century was fundamental to understand the main aspects of the Portuguese society of the XIX century: such as family, education, the idleness and the lack of social role of Portuguese women. In such way, it was necessary to analyze some biographical studies to learn the importance which those women had in the writers life.

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation examines transatlantic, and especially American, literary responses to urban and industrial change from the 1840s through the 1930s. It combines cultural materialist theory with environmental history in order to investigate the interrelationship of literature, economy, and biophysical systems. In lieu of a traditional ecocritical focus on wilderness preservation and the accompanying literary mode of nature writing, I bring attention to reforms of the "built environment" and to the related category of social problem fiction, including narratives of documentary realism, urban naturalism, and politically-oriented utopianism. The novels and short stories of Charles Dickens, Herman Melville, Rebecca Harding Davis, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Upton Sinclair, and Mike Gold offer an alternative history of environmental writing, one that foregrounds the interaction between nature and labor. Through a strategy of "literal reading" I connect the representation of particular environments in the work of these authors to the historical situation of actual spaces, including the western Massachusetts forest of Melville's "Tartarus of Maids," the Virginia factory town of Davis's Iron Mills, the Midwestern hinterland of Sinclair's The Jungle, and the New York City ghetto of Gold's Jews without Money. Even as these texts foreground the class basis of environmental hazard, they simultaneously display an ambivalence toward the physical world, wavering between pastoral celebrations and gothic vilifications of nature, and condemning ecological destruction even as they naturalize the very socio-economic forces responsible for such calamity. Following Raymond Williams, I argue that these contradictory treatments of nature have a basis in the historical relationship between capitalist society and the material world. Fiction struggles to contain or resolve its implication in the very culture that destroys the land base it celebrates. Thus, the formal fissures and the anxious eruptions of nature in fiction relate dialectically to the contradictory position of the ecosystem itself within the regime of industrial capital. Do Cortiço à Cidade de Deus : a representação dos de baixo na literatura e no cinema

Esta tese situa-se na intersecção da literatura com o cinema. O objetivo é lançar um olhar sobre os seus respectivos processos de criação e significação, considerando suas especificidades. Pois mesmo quando parte de um texto literário, o cinema diverge, ultrapassa e atravessa a linha de partida, apresentando diferentes dimensões e processos. O estudo problematiza a conexão entre arte e realidade social. Propõe uma comparação entre os romances O cortiço e Cidade de Deus e suas respectivas adaptações homônimas, buscando analisar as obras como capazes de traduzir o fenômeno social da pobreza na urbe. Ambas as obras literárias estão conformadas dentro de um projeto realista/naturalista e revelam momentos agudos de uma realidade social historicamente contextualizada em épocas distintas, a primeira pertence ao final do Brasil império e a segunda no Brasil contemporâneo. As obras fílmicas buscam o diálogo com os textos originais em seus procedimentos narrativos, dentro de suas proposições estéticas específicas à área cinematográfica, e também problematizam as questões sociais, em maior ou menor grau. A confrontação do corpora evidencia um processo de refinamento histórico de divisão da sociedade em classes econômicas e, portanto, uma engrenagem social e cultural excludente de segregação dos de baixo, em guetos, visto que estes carregam um estigma criado que os define como um outro, indesejado e potencialmente perigoso. A pesquisa verifica, ainda, dentro das fronteiras cerradas dos espaços narrativos das obras uma interessante articulação entre ordem/desordem que só irá evidenciar a lógica perversa dos contrassensos da sociedade brasileira e as desigualdades presentes nela. Portanto, este estudo demonstra nas obras, um sistema de relações concretas da configuração social do próprio Brasil. / This dissertation lies between literature and cinema. It examines two Brazilian novels O cortiço and Cidade de Deus through a comparative study between literary narratives and their corresponding filmic adaptations, raising the problem of connecting art and social reality. This study argues that both literary narratives from a naturalist/realist project are representations of urban poverty translated into a historically contextualized social phenomenon; which reveals acute moments, firstly from an imperial Brazil and then from the contemporary country it became. The films establish a dialogue with social approaches brought up by the original texts, as well as their narrative procedures, although they have kept their own specific film aesthetic propositions. Further, the confrontation of the corpora demonstrates the division process, which has historically refined this society in classes, or guettos, economically and culturally segregated; and in doing so, it has also stigmatized this group of people as undesired and potentially dangerous, the so-called os de baixo (the ones below). The analysis articulates literary and filmic narrative settings, in terms of order/disorder concepts, showing the evidence of a perverted Brazilian social logic based on its own nonsense and inequality. Thus, this study affirms the existence of a historically concrete social relation system in Brazilian romances and films corresponding to the configuration of Brazil itself.
