Modeling the rebound effect in two manufacturing industries

Safarzynska, Karolina 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The rebound effect refers to the phenomenon that energy savings from improvements in energy efficiency are lower than expected due to unintended second-order effects. Grasping specific mechanisms related to the rebound effect requires a good understanding of interactions between heterogonous agents on multiple markets. Otherwise, policies aimed at reducing energy use may render counter-expected and unforeseen consequences. In this paper, we propose a formal model, where technological change results from interactions on two markets: between consumers and producers in the market for final goods, and heterogeneous power plants in the electricity market. The analysis provides insights to the role of technological change, supply-demand coevolution, and status-driven consumption in explaining the rebound effect. The model is employed to compare effectiveness of economic policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions associated with production of consumer goods, namely: a tax on electricity and "nuclear obligations" to produce ten percent of electricity from nuclear energy. Effect of glucose on the suppression and post-suppression rebound of stereotypes.

Wilkinson, Ryan John Paul January 2011 (has links)
The suppression of unwanted thoughts is an effortful process. An ironic effect of this process is that the unwanted thoughts can become hyper-accessibility after a period of their suppression, known as “post-suppression rebound”. In the present study the impact of providing energy (through a glucose drink) on post-suppression rebound was investigated. One hundred and twenty participants participated in the main study, and another 30 participants served as a baseline group. Half of the participants in the main study were given a drink containing glucose and the other half was given a placebo drink containing an artificial sweetener. All participants wrote a passage about a “day in the life” of a gay male, with half the participants directed to avoid using stereotypes. A subsequent lexical decision task measured activation of stereotypes. Finally, a measure of prejudice was given to account for individual differences. Neither the direction to avoid using stereotypes nor the glucose resulted in lower stereotypicality of the “day in life” passages. Furthermore, response times during the lexical decision task did not differ between any of the main conditions or the baseline condition. However, the combination of both glucose and directed suppression did result in more positive passages, suggesting that the combination assists in reducing negative stereotype usage. Results are discussed in terms of stereotype usage and suppression and prejudice level.

Simple Question, Complex Answer : Pathways Towards a 50% Decrease in Building Energy Use

Weiss, Philipp January 2014 (has links)
Addressing building energy use is a pressing issue for building sector decisionmakers across Europe. In Sweden, some regions have adopted a target of reducingenergy use in buildings by 50% until 2050. However, building codes currently donot support as ambitious objectives as these, and novel approaches to addressingenergy use in buildings from a regional perspective are called for. The purpose ofthis licentiate thesis was to provide a deeper understanding of most relevant issueswith regard to energy use in buildings from a broad perspective and to suggestpathways towards reaching the long-term savings objective. Current trends inbuilding sector structure and energy use point to detached houses constructed before1981 playing a key role in the energy transition, especially in the rural areas ofSweden. In the Swedish county of Dalarna, which was used as a study area in thisthesis, these houses account for almost 70% of the residential heating demand.Building energy simulations of eight sample houses from county show that there isconsiderable techno-economic potential for energy savings in these houses, but notquite enough to reach the 50% savings objective. Two case studies from ruralSweden show that savings well beyond 50% are achievable, both when access tocapital and use of high technology are granted and when they are not. However, on abroader scale both direct and indirect rebound effects will have to be expected, which calls for more refined approaches to energy savings. Furthermore, researchhas shown that the techno-economic potential is in fact never realised, not even inthe most well-designed intervention programmes, due to the inherent complexity ofhuman behaviour with respect to energy use. This is not taken account of in neithercurrent nor previous Swedish energy use legislation. Therefore an approach thatconsiders the technical prerequisites, economic aspects and the perspective of themany home owners, based on Community-Based Social Marketing methodology, issuggested as a way forward towards reaching the energy savings target.

Moreno, Tatiana Martinez January 2016 (has links)
The measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) is essential for the ophthalmic examination, as it allows the diagnosis of eye diseases such as uveitis and glaucoma, as well as aid in the monitoring of intraocular surgery. This study aimed to compare the mean intraocular pressure (IOP) values in horses obtained by three different examiners using the rebound and applanation tonometer’s. Each examiner measured the IOP of 30 “Crioulo” horses, males or females, aged one to 16 years old, using rebound tonometer and applanation tonometer. Previous to the experiment an ophthalmic examination was performed in horses. Only animals without alterations were selected. Three veterinarians measured IOP with rebound (Tonovet®) and applanation tonometer’s (TonoPen Avia®). Comparisons were made using ANOVA and student t test. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated for reproducibility. IOP measurements resulted in mean values of 26.16 ± 5.13 mmHg for rebound tonometer and 22.55 ±7.32 mmHg for applanation tonometer. These values were different on statistical analysis. Rebound tonometer mean values, according with the examiner, were: A 25.27 ± 4.9 mmHg, B 25.80 ± 5.2, C 27.40 ± 5.1 mmHg. For applanation tonometer the mean IOP for examiner A (20.03 ± 4.5 mmHg), B (19.67 ± 6.0 mmHg), C (27.97 ± 10.3 mmHg). With the Tonopen Avia® tonometer examiner C measured higher IOP’s than examiners A and B. Intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.41 for rebound tonometer was 0.18 for applanation tonometer. It was observed that the values obtained with the Tonovet® were overestimated compared to Tonopen Avia® in healthy horses. When compared with Tonopen Avia® values obtained with the Tonovet® showed a higher reproducibility.

Bacchin, Angela Beatriz de Oliveira January 2018 (has links)
The tonometry is extremely important during ophthalmic examination, because assists in the diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma and intraocular inflammation. However, intraocular pressure values may be influenced by the moment of the day it is measured. The objective was to evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP) with Rebound Tonometer in healthy horses of the Crioula breed at different times of the day. Twenty five horses, male or female, were divided into three groups by age: Group I: nine horses (3-5 years old), Group II: eight horses (6-8 years old), and Group III: eight horses (9-16 years old). Ophthalmic examination was performed previously by Schirmer Tear Test, slit lamp biomicroscopy, fluorescein test and indirect ophthalmoscopy in all horses. Seven measurements of intraocular pressure were assessed on the same day (at 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 hours). The Student’s T Test statistical analysis was used when there was two groups of comparisons, and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used for variables IOP, measurement time and age category. The average value of intraocular pressure was 28.4 ± 3.7 mmHg considering all the animals evaluated. The mean intraocular pressure for groups I, II and III were 29.2 ± 3.5 mmHg, 28.4 ± 4.3 mmHg and 27.7 ± 3.2 mmHg, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between right and left eyes (p = 0.257), nor between genders (p = 0.284). When compared to the ages, the average IOP was significantly higher in young animals (p = 0.012). There was no statistically significant result between the different times of the day (p = 0.560). The IOP values measured with rebound tonometer in Crioula horses were influenced by age. The average intraocular pressure values obtained with rebound tonometer in healthy horses did not change with time of day.

The Solvent Cage Effect: Using Microviscosity to Predict the Recombination Efficiency of Geminate Radicals Formed by the Photolysis of the Mo-Mo Bond of Cpʹ2Mo2(CO)6

Barry, Justin 06 September 2018 (has links)
Radicals are core reactive species that occur in almost every subfield of chemistry. In particular, solution phase radicals find their way into biochemistry (e.g. vitamin B12), and in polymer chemistry (e.g. radical polymerizations) just to name a few. Yet, given the proliferation of radical chemistry, there are still fundamental aspects of it that are poorly understood. This dissertation probed factors that influence the solvent cage effect. The solvent cage effect is where two radicals are held in close proximity to one another and prevented from easily escaping (to form free radicals) by a cage of solvent molecules. A convenient metric of the solvent cage effect is the radical recombination efficiency (FcP). Typically, FcP correlates with the bulk viscosity of the solution, however, this parameter only produces qualitative assessments. This dissertation outlines a method to quantitatively predict FcP using the microviscosity. This microviscosity dependence holds for non polar, aromatic, polar, and hydrogen-bonding solvents, along with solutions that contain polymers. Microviscosity is a great metric because it addresses an underlying reason for the solvent cage effect, the strength of the cage. Not only does the strength of the solvent cage around the radical pair affect FcP, but so does the identity of the radicals themselves. That is, the strength of the solvent cage is one piece to forming a total predictive model. FcP for the Cp'2Mo2(CO)6 dimer also varies with the wavelength of irradiation. Identifying the mechanism by which this wavelength dependence occurs may also provide another factor to include in an overall model of the solvent cage effect. Also, an attempt at synthesizing an asymmetric molybdenum dimer was performed. This asymmetric dimer would allow the study of solvent caged radical pairs that are different from each other. Predicting the photochemical cage pair recombination efficiency (FcP) is the major topic of this dissertation. However, there is also the collisional cage recombination efficiency (Fcʹ). This is where free radicals come together in what is called a collisional solvent cage pair. A method and values of Fcʹ are detailed later in this dissertation. This dissertation contains previously published and unpublished co-authored material.

Avaliação de métodos dinâmicos baseados em nega e repique elástico: estudo de caso / Evaluation of dynamic methods based on set and rebound elastic: a case study

Mário Luiz de Oliveira Medrano 21 February 2014 (has links)
The different final lengths of driven piles reflect the natural variability of the soil, and are dependent of the driving controls based in the measurements of the final set and elastic rebound. Normally these measurements are not used to predict the ultimate capacity of pile foundations, at the end of driving, due to the limitation of the dynamic formulas and the lack of some parameters. In many cases, the pile capacity control is based on a determination of a single safety factor, obtained from pile load tests. In this work, it is proposed a procedure to control the ultimate capacity of driven piles, based on the results of the final set and the elastic rebound, and dynamic formulas, which allow the estimation of the mobilized resistance at the end of driving of all piles driven in a particular project. This procedure was applied in a case study of a port in Santa Catarina. In this case, 2506 precast concrete piles were driven, and controlled by the elastic rebound, recorded at the end of driving. Also, dynamic load tests, with increasing energy, were performed on 74 piles, and static load tests were carried out on four piles. The results showed that this procedure adopted, based on the use of dynamic formulas calibrated using the results of dynamic load tests, is capable to estimate the values of mobilized resistance along all piles at the end of driving. The average result of the mobilized resistance of the 2506 piles was close to the average value found by the results of the 74 pile dynamic load tests. Also, the coefficient of variation of the mobilized resistance of all piles was around 16.0%, similar to the coefficient of variation of 14.7%, obtained by the dynamic load tests.

Benaissa, Imene 29 October 2015 (has links)
This paper presents test results of mechanical properties of fibre reinforced sand-concrete (BSP) formulated to be used in the sprayed wet-mix process, as a substitution to fibre reinforced concrete (BOP) sprayed by dry-mix process. This process of application of concrete is suitable for diverse applications such underground support and slope stabilization. In BOP, formulated with aggregates up to 8 mm, both material and fibre rebounds are high (50 %); this results in economic implications, and affects the performances of the mixture negatively.BSP formulated with low dosage of cement, sand and high content of limestone filler, but without coarse aggregate; seems to be indicated to alleviate most of these problems, because of its fineness, high cohesiveness, high fluidity and better homogeneity. BSP was investigated and compared with BOP, on the basis of fresh and hardened properties with special emphasis on rebound, compressive strength and drying shrinkage. Results of investigations showed many advantages of this new mixture (BSP) when compared to BOP: reduction of material and fibre rebounds by approximately 50%, relatively substantially thicker layers (9 cm vs 6 cm), good finishing surface, higher early age compressive strength, and long term drying shrinkage close to that of BOP.Comparison of the results shows that the endogenous shrinkage of BOP, BSP and vibrated concrete (BV) is similar. On the other hand, the present study showed that a low amount of steel fibre (50 Kg/m3)reduces the drying shrinkage of BSP by approximately 16%.While, in the case of BOP, the influence is not significant. The aim of this study is to bring some answers to the questions about the delayed deformation of the shooting sand-concrete [BSP], which is made of aggregates up 5 mm.Drying shrinkage results, revealed that drying shrinkage of BSP is higher than that of BV in the short term. In the long term, it becomes lower than that of BV. However, the BSP loses more water during the period of shrinkage measurements than BV. Furthermore, pore size distribution shows that the mesoporous structure of BSP lost more water than the bimodal structure of BV, which includes macropores and mesopores. These particular porometric structures of BSP and BV are the main factor behind the difference of the drying shrinkage behaviour of the two mixtures. This is an interesting and unexpected result, which is not in accordance with the commonly accepted relationship between shrinkage and weight change of samples, and between moisture loss and porometric structure. This work provides an explanation for this phenomenon by taking into account the kinetics of drying and the porometry of the concrete.
