Online cancer support: What the consumer has to say

Rapach, Erin Elizabeth 10 July 2009 (has links)
Although the research on the effects of cancer on the patient and its impact on the family system, as well as on the benefits of support groups for this population is abundant, there is relatively little research that examines the benefits of online cancer support groups, the meaning that users attribute to giving and receiving support, and the effects of use on the user's significant other. Using the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, and Social Interactionism online surveys were conducted with seven individuals who considered themselves active members of the online Cancer Survivors Network, were all diagnosed with cancer and living with a significant other. These surveys were coded for themes using Thematic Analysis. The main themes identified included: feeling normal, belonging to a community, hope, honest and open place to talk about fears, feelings and possibility of death, that experiencing and recovering or dealing with cancer is a process, gaining understanding, acceptance and support, as well as information, a better sense of well-being related to hope and humor, and feeling helpful. The themes that emerged when looking at the partner relationships were: feelings of jealousy, and sharing the online community with their partner. Implications for clinical practice and suggestions for future research are included. / Master of Science

Narvik 1940 – receiving support : The battles in the mountains analysed in perspective of the six basic capabilities of combat.

Lindfors, Jonny January 2012 (has links)
This study is a case study of the land war in the vicinity of Narvik 1940, analysed in perspective of the six basic capabilities of combat; effect on target, protection, mobility, command and control, sustainability and intelligence. The main angle is the challenges of receiving support. How come the Norwegians and supporting allied units weren’t able to defeat the outnumbered German troops in the mountains? To be able to filter out the essential factors on a tactical level the following questions are used: -How did the basic capabilities of combat appear among the allied and the German units? -Which capability was most decisive for the outcome of the battle between the opponents? -Which difficulties in receiving support are relevant for Swedish conditions? The result of the study reveals that severe mistakes in the command and control among the allied units caused ineffective support from the allied units. It also reveals that the protection and sustainability among the German units had an important role for the outcome.

Rahm, Malin January 2018 (has links)
Social workers within the Swedish act concerning support and service for persons with certain functional impairments (LSS) has in their profession several factors to take into account. They have the individualistic approaches of LSS, the organization´s rules and guidelines as well as the people receiving support. They provide the framework for the profession, within professional’s discretion. The aim of this study was to investigate how professionals experience and manage their discretion and what governs their use. In order to fulfill the aim of the study qualitative interviews have been used and subsequently analyzed by Michael Lipskys theory of street-level bureaucracy and the theoretical concept discretion. The result showed that professionals felt that their discretion meant difficulties but also opportunities for accommodate various parts, despite being handled by power. Furthermore, the result showed that occupational work experience control how the discretion is used and influenced by their knowledge and competence, as well as the possibility of reflection.
