The understanding of poverty by poverty-alleviation project participants

The war on poverty is South Africa's priority and challenge. Many poverty alleviation programmes have been established in South Africa in an effort to overcome poverty. However, poverty alleviation projects have had little impact on the poverty profile of the country. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable, and inexcusable. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the personal definition of poverty as constructed by the poor themselves. In this study the researcher's main argument was that sustainable poverty reduction calls for effective strategies based on clear and consistent concepts and approaches. Different ways of understanding poverty lead to different ways of dealing with it. A common and clear understanding of poverty helps build a common agenda with development partners, linking specific causes of poverty in each setting with sustainable policies and action. A qualitative study was conducted with fifteen (15) poverty-alleviation projects participants from three (3) different projects. Data was collected with the use of an interview guide. The participants' responses revealed that poverty, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. The participants attached varying and interesting meanings to explaining the concept of poverty. The study also shed some light on the current state of the poverty-alleviation projects. / Social Work / M.A. (Social science)

Adolescent identity experiences of historically disadvantaged scholarship recipients attending independent South African high schools

Thesis (MEdPsych)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Little is known about the experiences that previously disadvantaged bursary and scholarship learners have in independent South African schools. Many scholarship and bursary recipients are from homes that fall into the low to middle income groups and they find themselves surrounded by boys and girls who are from high income, affluent homes. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of the experiences that scholarship learners have within independent school environments and to find out what the opportunities and challenges are that they may face. Bronfenbrenner‟s bioecological model was used as theoretical framework as it incorporates a number of different interconnected systems that will influence the participant's lives and their experiences. These microsystems included parents, school, peers and the individual. This study's research methodology is a phenomenological approach which is embedded within the interpretative paradigm. Purposeful sampling was used to select eight learners from four different independent schools in the Western Cape. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted within two months of each other, with each of the participants. Phenomenological data analysis was conducted to analyse the information provided in the interviews. The research findings indicated that previously disadvantaged scholarship learners face a great deal of pressure in the form of high expectations being placed on them, both academically and behaviourally. Racial stereotyping was found to be prevalent with regards to assumptions made about learner's academic abilities and financial backgrounds. Challenges related to cultural difference and financial challenges were also noted. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Min is bekend oor die ervarings wat voorheen benadeelde beurs-leerders in onafhanklike (private) Suid-Afrikaanse skole. Baie beurshouers kom uit huise wat in die lae tot middel inkomste groepe val, en hulle vind hulself tussen seuns en meisies wat van hoë-inkomste huise kom. Die doel van hierdie studie is om die ervarings wat die beursleerders in onafhanklike skool omgewings beter te verstaan en vas te stel watter geleenthede en uitdagings hulle ervaar. Bronfenbrenner se bioëkologiese model word gebruik as ‟n teoretiese raamwerk omdat dit verskillende stelsels insluit wat ‟n invloed sal hê op die deelnemers se lewens en ervarings. Die mikrostelsel sluit die ouers, skool, portuurgroep en individu in. Hierdie studie se navorsingsmetodologie is 'n fenomenologiese benadering wat binne die interpretatiewe paradigma ingebed is. Doelgerigte steekproefneming is gebruik om agt leerders van vier verskillende onafhanklike skole in die Wes-Kaap te kies. Twee semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude is gevoer met elkeen van die deelnemers tussen ‟n tydperk van twee maande. Fenomenologiese data-analise is gebruik om die inligting van die onderhoude te analiseer. Die navorsingsbevindinge het aangedui dat die deelnemers baie druk ervaar in die vorm van hoë verwagtinge wat op hulle geplaas word, in terme van hul akademiese prestasie en gedrag. Algemene rasse-stereotipering was gevind met betrekking tot die aannames wat gemaak is oor die leerders se akademiese vermoëns en finansiële agtergronde. Kulturele verskille en finansiële uitdagings is ook opgemerk.

Funktionelle Analyse von komplexen Hepatitis-B-Virus-Varianten, assoziiert mit Leberzirrhose bei Immunsupprimierten

Obwohl der Wildtyp des Hepatitis-B-Virus (HBV) nicht zytopathogen und die Pathogenese der Hepatitis B generell immunvermittelt ist, können in immunsupprimierten Nierentransplantatempfängern mit chronischer Hepatitis B schwere Leberschäden bis hin zu Leberzirrhose und Leberversagen entstehen. Die Entwicklung von Leberzirrhose in den Nierentransplantierten ist assoziiert mit der Akkumulation und Persistenz von komplexen HBV-Varianten mit Mutationen im Core-Promotor / X-Gen, Deletionen im Core (C)-Gen und teilweise zusätzlichen Deletionen im präS-Bereich. Dies lässt eine Rolle der Varianten in der speziellen Pathogenese bei Immunsupprimierten vermuten. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden funktionelle Analysen der komplexen Varianten im Vergleich zu Referenz-Wildtypgenomen und Wildtyp-ähnlichen Genomen der Patienten aus der frühen Infektionsphase durchgeführt, um Hinweise auf den potentiellen Beitrag der Varianten zur Pathogenese zu erlangen. Die Analysen erfolgten durch transiente Transfektion der humanen Hepatomazelllinie HuH7 mit repräsentativen HBV-Gesamtgenomen, die aus 2 Patienten während des Krankheitsverlaufs von einer asymptomatischen Infektion hin zur Leberzirrhose isoliert und kloniert worden waren. Trotz einiger Unterschiede im Detail wiesen die komplexen Varianten einen gemeinsamen, drastisch vom Wildtyp abweichenden Phänotyp auf. Dieser war gekennzeichnet durch eine veränderte Transkription mit reduzierten präC- und Oberflächen-mRNAs und verstärkter Expression der prägenomischen RNA, eine starke Reduktion des häufigsten Spleißprodukts der prägenomischen RNA, SP1, eine extrem reduzierte oder fehlende Expression und/oder Sekretion aller Oberflächenproteine und des HBeAg, ein verändertes intrazelluläres Verteilungsmuster des schwach exprimierten Core-Proteins und teilweise der Oberflächenproteine sowie eine erhöhte Replikation und Anreicherung gegenüber Wildtyp-HBV aufgrund einer verstärkten reversen Transkription der prägenomischen RNA. Dieser Phänotyp basierte zum Teil auf den Mutationen in Core-Promotor und C-Gen, wurde jedoch deutlich durch zusätzliche Mutationen in den übrigen Genomabschnitten beeinflusst. Die vielfältigen Veränderungen der Varianten unterstützen ihren vermuteten Beitrag zur Pathogenese. / Although wild-type hepatitis B virus is not cytopathogenic and the pathogenesis of hepatitis B is generally immune mediated, also immuno-suppressed patients, such as renal transplant recipients, with chronic hepatitis B may develop liver cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. In renal transplant recipients, the development of liver cirrhosis is associated with the accumulation and persistence of complex HBV variants with mutations in core promoter / X gene, deletions in core (C) gene and sometimes additional deletions in the preS region. This suggests a role of these variants in the special pathogenesis in immuno-suppressed patients. In the present work, the complex variants were functionally analyzed in comparison to reference wild-type genomes and wild-type-like HBV genomes from the early asymptomatic phase of infection. For the analyses, representative cloned full-length HBV genomes isolated from 2 patients before and during liver cirrhosis were transiently transfected into the human hepatoma cell line HuH7. In spite of some variations, the complex variants showed a common phenotype, which was drastically altered compared to wild-type. It was characterized by reduced preC and surface mRNAs and increased expression of pregenomic RNA, by a strong reduction of the major spliced pregenomic RNA, SP1, by a partial or complete defect in expression and/or secretion of surface proteins and HBeAg, by an aberrant intracellular localization of the weakly expressed core protein and in some cases of the surface proteins, and by an enhanced replication and enrichment over wild-type HBV due to an enhanced reverse transcription of variant pregenomic RNA. The phenotypic alterations were often based on the mutations in core promoter and C gene but were considerably influenced by the additional mutations in other genomic regions. The multiple functional changes of the variants support their assumed contribution to pathogenesis.

The challenges experienced by the people living with HIV on the termination of temporary disability grant in a semi-urban area in Gauteng

Text in English / The South African government provides people living with HIV Temporary Disability Grants to assist them with money when they cannot work due to being disabled by HIV. The toll of the disease has contributed to the inability to be employed among black South Africans. The aim of this exploratory qualitative study was to investigate the challenges experienced by people living with HIV when their Temporary Disability Grants are terminated in the semi-urban area of Gauteng. The temporary disability grant is terminated after six months of receiving it. In-depth interviews were conducted with people who live with HIV who are members of Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre support group. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. The findings of the study revealed that the termination of Temporary Disability Grant affects the running of the households of people living with HIV, causes poor management of the disease, non-adherence to treatment which leads to viral rebound, poor nutrition as a result of poor finances. The findings of this study are significant for the policy review on how long a person should receive the disability grant and the criteria used to apply for a disability grant, and to encourage the people living with HIV to start their own gardening programmes for food supply. Unequal Opportunities for Citizenship Learning? Diverse Student Experiences Completing Ontario’s Community Involvement Requirement

This thesis examined diverse students' experiences completing Ontario's community involvement requirement. An analysis of quantitative surveys and qualitative focus groups among 50 current and recently graduated secondary school students from widely contrasting socio-economic settings showed ways in which diverse participants perceived their community involvement activities, the support for community involvement in their schools, and their associated opportunities to develop capacity to make changes toward a more socially just world. Results indicated that low-income participants reported dissimilar experiences from high-income participants, in relation to the support for community involvement provided by school staffs, participants' direct or distant relationships with service recipients, and their sense of individual and collective agency to effect change. Thus, this study challenges the assumption that all students in Ontario have equal access to the citizenship education learning opportunities embedded in meaningful community involvement activities.
