Gestão de resíduos têxteis na manufatura do vestuário de moda em malharia retilínea: estudo de múltiplos casos / Textile Waste Management in the manufacture of fashionable clothing in rectilinear knitting: multiple case study.

Gentile, Ana Paula 19 October 2017 (has links)
This qualitative research sought the environmental reality of some selected industrial knitting production in the region of Monte Sião, in Minas Gerais, regarding the greater or lesser presence of \"cleaner production\" concerns, as well as its vision in terms of reduction of water use, energy, and especially solid textile waste. It has been justified by the environmental concerns and their preservation that imply issues increasingly relevant and addressed in studies related to fashion clothing, such as design that is fully connected to everyday changes, and interested in reducing materials. Cleaner production is found in this context, aiming to add improvements in the process or product, seeking solutions through the presentation of some processes that guide these paths. A review of the literature on textiles, fashion and environmental scenarios and a field research were carried out based on qualitative exploratory research methods, using direct observations and semi-structured interviews accomplished on-site. Some research results suggest that the environmental reality of the industrial production of knitting products is in line with cleaner production, especially in relation to the treatment of solid textile waste. In the field research approach, differences were observed regarding actions aimed at minimizing water, energy, and solid textile waste generation, while showing them a concern and treatments, indicating in a certain way that there is a balance to the direction of the textile waste and the dedication in the treatment, being an important point of care of the industrial pole

Eddy-covariance carbon balance, photosynthetic capacity and vegetation indices in a harvested boreal jack pine stand

Hawthorne, Iain 05 1900 (has links)
Eddy-covariance (EC) CO₂ flux data were analysed and annual carbon (C) balances estimated for a four-year period (2004-2007) following clearcut harvesting of a boreal jack pine stand in northern Saskatchewan. The site was a source of C to the atmosphere for all years, with annual net ecosystem productivity (NEP) increasing from -153 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ in 2004 to -63 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ in 2007. This increase was mainly due to gross primary productivity (GPP) increasing significantly from 78 to 200 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ , while ecosystem respiration (R) increased only slightly from 231 to 263 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ over the same period. In the 2006 growing season (GS), a field campaign was conducted to investigate the relationships between monthly destructive measurements of leaf area index (LAI) and daily measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and photosynthetic capacity (Amax). The latter was derived from 5-day, 16-day, 30-day and annual Michaelis-Menten light response analyses using daytime measurements of NEP and incident photosynthetically active radiation. Digital-camera data were used to evaluate the potential of using the rectilinear-lens vegetation index (RLVI) as a surrogate for NDVI of a young forest stand. Results showed that LAI was linearly related to NDVI and RLVI, which was largely the result of changes in the deciduous vegetation component across the GS. These results indicate that RLVI could be used as a surrogate for NDVI up to a GS maximum LAI of 0.91 m2 m⁻² observed in 2006. Measured mean (± 1 S.D.) GS LAI was 0.67 (± 0.24) m² m⁻² in 2006. LAI accounted for the majority of the variability in Amax at the 30-day time scale, while at shorter time scales air temperature was the dominant control. For 2004 to 2007, mean spring estimates of LAI were 0.25, 0.29, 0.38 (compared to 0.40 m² m⁻² from measurements) and 0.41 m² m⁻², respectively. Results suggest that a steady increase in the jack pine LAI component accounted for the annual increases in GPP and hence NEP over the four years.

Sequential And Parallel Heuristic Algorithms For The Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem

Cinel, Sertac 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The Steiner Tree problem is one of the most popular graph problems and has many application areas. The rectilinear version of this problem, introduced by Hanan, has taken special attention since it addresses a fundamental matter in &ldquo / Physical Design&rdquo / phase of the Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) Computer Aided Design (CAD) process. The Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem asks for a minimum length tree that interconnects a given set of points by only horizontal and vertical line segments, enabling the use of extra points. There are various exact algorithms. However the problem is NP-complete hence approximation algorithms have to be used especially for large instances. In this thesis work, first a survey on heuristics for the Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem is conducted and then two recently developed successful algorithms, BGA by Kahng et. al. and RST by Zhou have been studied and investigated deeply. Both algorithms have subproblems, most of which have individual backgrounds in literature. After an analysis of BGA and RST, the thesis proposes a modification on RST, which leads to a faster and non-recursive version. The efficiency of the modified algorithm has been validated by computational tests using both random and VLSI benchmark instances. A partially parallelized version of the modified algorithm is also proposed for distributed computing environments. It is implemented using MPI (message passing interface) middleware and the results of comparative tests conducted on a cluster of workstations are presented. The proposed distributed algorithm has also proved to be promising especially for large problem instances.

Complexity and Approximation of the Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem

Mussafi, Noor Saif Muhammad 05 August 2009 (has links)
Given a finite set K of terminals in the plane. A rectilinear Steiner minimum tree for K (RST) is a tree which interconnects among these terminals using only horizontal and vertical lines of shortest possible length containing Steiner point. We show the complexity of RST i.e. belongs to NP-complete. Moreover we present an approximative method of determining the solution of RST problem proposed by Sanjeev Arora in 1996, Arora's Approximation Scheme. This algorithm has time complexity polynomial in the number of terminals for a fixed performance ratio 1 + Epsilon.

The role of functional surfaces in the locomotion of snakes

Marvi, Hamidreza 13 January 2014 (has links)
Snakes are one of the world’s most versatile organisms, at ease slithering through rubble or climbing vertical tree trunks. Their adaptations for conquering complex terrain thus serve naturally as inspirations for search and rescue robotics. In a combined experimental and theoretical investigation, we elucidate the propulsion mechanisms of snakes on both hard and granular substrates. The focus of this study is on physics of snake interactions with its environment. Snakes use one of several modes of locomotion, such as slithering on flat surfaces, sidewinding on sand, or accordion-like concertina and worm-like rectilinear motion to traverse crevices. We present a series of experiments and supporting mathematical models demonstrating how snakes optimize their speed and efficiency by adjusting their frictional properties as a function of position and time. Particular attention is paid to a novel paradigm in locomotion, a snake’s active control of its scales, which enables it to modify its frictional interactions with the ground. We use this discovery to build bio-inspired limbless robots that have improved sensitivity to the current state of the art: Scalybot has individually controlled sets of belly scales enabling it to climb slopes of 55 degrees. These findings will result in developing new functional materials and control algorithms that will guide roboticists as they endeavor towards building more effective all-terrain search and rescue robots.

Trajectory Design and Targeting For Applications to the Exploration Program in Cislunar Space

Emily MZ Spreen (10665798) 07 May 2021 (has links)

A dynamical understanding of orbits in the Earth-Moon neighborhood that can sustain long-term activities and trajectories that link locations of interest forms a critical foundation for the creation of infrastructure to support a lasting presence in this region of space. In response, this investigation aims to identify and exploit fundamental dynamical motion in the vicinity of a candidate ‘hub’ orbit, the L2 southern 9:2 lunar synodic resonant near rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO), while incorporating realistic mission constraints. The strategies developed in this investigation are, however, not restricted to this particular orbit but are, in fact, applicable to a wide variety of stable and nearly-stable cislunar orbits. Since stable and nearly-stable orbits that may lack useful manifold structures are of interest for long-term activities in cislunar space due to low orbit maintenance costs, strategies to alternatively initiate transfer design into and out of these orbits are necessary. Additionally, it is crucial to understand the complex behaviors in the neighborhood of any candidate hub orbit. In this investigation, a bifurcation analysis is used to identify periodic orbit families in close proximity to the hub orbit that may possess members with favorable stability properties, i.e., unstable orbits. Stability properties are quantified using a metric defined as the stability index. Broucke stability diagrams, a tool in which the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix are recast into two simple parameters, are used to identify bifurcations along orbit families. Continuation algorithms, in combination with a differential corrections scheme, are used to compute new families of periodic orbits originating at bifurcations. These families possess unstable members with associated invariant manifolds that are indeed useful for trajectory design. Members of the families nearby the L2 NRHOs are demonstrated to persist in a higher-fidelity ephemeris model.

Transfers based on the identified nearby dynamical structures and their associated manifolds are designed. To formulate initial guesses for transfer trajectories, a Poincaré mapping technique is used. Various sample trajectory designs are produced in this investigation to demonstrate the wide applicability of the design methodology. Initially, designs are based in the circular restricted three-body problem, however, geometries are demonstrated to persist in a higher-fidelity ephemeris model, as well. A strategy to avoid Earth and Moon eclipse conditions along many-revolution quasi-periodic ephemeris orbits and transfer trajectories is proposed in response to upcoming mission needs. Lunar synodic resonance, in combination with careful epoch selection, produces a simple eclipse-avoidance technique. Additionally, an integral-type eclipse avoidance path constraint is derived and incorporated into a differential corrections scheme as well. Finally, transfer trajectories in the circular restricted three-body problem and higher-fidelity ephemeris model are optimized and the geometry is shown to persist.

Geometric Steiner minimal trees

De Wet, Pieter Oloff 31 January 2008 (has links)
In 1992 Du and Hwang published a paper confirming the correctness of a well known 1968 conjecture of Gilbert and Pollak suggesting that the Euclidean Steiner ratio for the plane is 2/3. The original objective of this thesis was to adapt the technique used in this proof to obtain results for other Minkowski spaces. In an attempt to create a rigorous and complete version of the proof, some known results were given new proofs (results for hexagonal trees and for the rectilinear Steiner ratio) and some new results were obtained (on approximation of Steiner ratios and on transforming Steiner trees). The most surprising result, however, was the discovery of a fundamental gap in the proof of Du and Hwang. We give counter examples demonstrating that a statement made about inner spanning trees, which plays an important role in the proof, is not correct. There seems to be no simple way out of this dilemma, and whether the Gilbert-Pollak conjecture is true or not for any number of points seems once again to be an open question. Finally we consider the question of whether Du and Hwang's strategy can be used for cases where the number of points is restricted. After introducing some extra lemmas, we are able to show that the Gilbert-Pollak conjecture is true for 7 or fewer points. This is an improvement on the 1991 proof for 6 points of Rubinstein and Thomas. / Mathematical Sciences / Ph. D. (Mathematics)
