Context-aware information systems and their application to health care

This thesis explores the field of context-aware information systems (CAIS). We present an approach called Compose, Learn, and Discover (CLD) to incorporate CAIS into the user daily workflow. The CLD approach is self-adjusting. It enables users to personalise the information views for different situations. The CAIS learns about the usage of the information views and recalls the right view in the right situation. We illustrate the CLD approach through an application in the health care field using the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA). In order to realise the CLD approach, we introduce Semantic Composition as a new paradigm to personalise information views. Semantic Composition leverages the type information in the domain model to simplify the user-interface composition process. We also introduce a pattern discovery mechanism that leverages data-mining algorithms to discover correlations between user information needs and different situations.

Durch die zunehmende Anzahl mobiler Endgeräte wie Smartphones sowie der Digitalisierung des öffentlichen Raums stehen ubiquitäre Umgebungen verstärkt im Fokus der Forschung. Werden die Endgeräte und zugehörigen Dienste einer solchen Umgebung zu einer kompositen, ubiquitären Anwendung (kubi App) zusammengefasst, so kann der Anwender auf diese über eine komposite Benutzerschnittstelle zugreifen, z. B. von seinem persönlichen Smartphone aus. Aus der Übertragung des Mashup-Entwicklungsansatzes auf ubiquitäre Umgebungen ergeben sich Implikationen, die im vorliegenden Beitrag untersucht werden sollen. Anhand der Untersuchung verwandter Forschungsarbeiten lassen sich wichtige funktionale Anforderungen aus der Perspektive der ubiquitären Umgebung und der Endgeräte formulieren, die im Rahmen dieses Beitrages vorgestellt werden. Anhand der Anforderungen wird eine Referenzarchitektur zu einem Entwicklungsframework für kubi Apps vorgestellt, die als Grundlage zur Entwicklung zukünftiger Laufzeitumgebungen dienen soll.

A reference architecture for cyber-physical fluid power systems: towards a smart ecosystem

Technological advances (e.g., high speed communication, artificial intelligence) and affordable computing and sensor hardware have become a key driver of developments like “Industry 4.0” or the “Industrial Internet of Things” (IIoT). Large numbers of machines and products are equipped with sensors to constantly monitor their condition, log usage data or trigger control processes. IIoT has been largely adopted by OEMs in various industries (such as automotive, machinery industry, or healthcare and medical), turning their product into cyber-physical systems. However, the resulting potential is not yet accessible to component manufacturers. Overall, horizontal integration of the value chain is still in its infancy. Specifically, IIoT for fluid powers just started in recent years with first research projects and commercial solutions. This work presents a reference architecture for cyber-physical fluid power systems which depicts how horizontal integration can be achieved and which potentials thus can be released. The architecture is validated in an industrial use case. Furthermore, the paper at hand discusses which components of the architecture should be addressed by which actor in the fluid power ecosystem in order to leverage opportunities from the IIoT.

A Framework for Interoperability on the United States Electric Grid Infrastructure

Historically, the United States (US) electric grid has been a stable one-way power delivery infrastructure that supplies centrally-generated electricity to its predictably consuming demand. However, the US electric grid is now undergoing a huge transformation from a simple and static system to a complex and dynamic network, which is starting to interconnect intermittent distributed energy resources (DERs), portable electric vehicles (EVs), and load-altering home automation devices, that create bidirectional power flow or stochastic load behavior. In order for this grid of the future to effectively embrace the high penetration of these disruptive and fast-responding digital technologies without compromising its safety, reliability, and affordability, plug-and-play interoperability within the field area network must be enabled between operational technology (OT), information technology (IT), and telecommunication assets in order to seamlessly and securely integrate into the electric utility's operations and planning systems in a modular, flexible, and scalable fashion. This research proposes a potential approach to simplifying the translation and contextualization of operational data on the electric grid without being routed to the utility datacenter for a control decision. This methodology integrates modern software technology from other industries, along with utility industry-standard semantic models, to overcome information siloes and enable interoperability. By leveraging industrial engineering tools, a framework is also developed to help devise a reference architecture and use-case application process that is applied and validated at a US electric utility.

Ranking System for IoT Industry Platform

The Internet of Things (IoT) has seen a huge growth spurt in the last few years which has resulted in the need for more standardised IoT technology. Because of this, numerous IoT platforms have sprung up that offer a variety of features and use different technologies which may not necessarily be compliant with each other or with other technologies. Companies that wish to enter theIoT market are in constant need to find the most suitable IoT platform for their business and have a certain set of requirements that need to be fulfilled by the IoT platforms in order for the application to be fully functional. The problem that this thesis project is trying to address is a standardised procedure for selecting the IoT platforms. The project aims to suggest a list of requirements derived from the available IoT architecture models, that must be followed by IoT applications in general, and a subset of these requirements may be specified by the companies as essentials for their application. This thesis project also aims at development of a Web platform to automate this process, by listing the requirements on this website and allowing companies to input their choices,and accordingly show them the list of IoT platforms that comply with their input requirements. A simple Weighted Sum Model is used to rank the search result in order to prioritise the IoT platforms in order of the features that they provide. This thesis project also infers the best IoT architectural model available based on a comparative study of three major IoT architectures with respect to the requirements proposed. Hence the project concludes that this Web platform will ease the process of searching for the right IoT platform andthe companies can therefore make an informed decision about the kind of IoT platform that they should use, thereby reducing their time spent on market research and hence their time-to-market.
