Adopting an Orphaned Collection

In 2014, the Corcoran was sold, dismantled and divided between the National Gallery of Art and George Washington University signaling the end of an era of art display in the Nation's Capital. This transformation of a major DC art collection was the impetus for this thesis: to mark the end of an era and to create a new home for the Corcoran Collection. To house this orphaned collection, I have studied similar elements that earlier architects have studied such as light, shadow, and reflection, taking into account the dawn of the next generation of art galleries. The role of this museum is to educate and facilitate information about the collection and the art. Contemporary art galleries that have been built recently included additional areas of services that were originally not part of the Corcoran Museum's building program, such as the role of conservation of historical objects including paintings and works on paper. Another area of my research was the relationship between the viewer and the building. The Corcoran has an extensive collection of American art and art directly from D.C. and it is important to allow direct access for the community and accommodate enough wall space to give context to the art. With the setting of the contemporary art gallery framed, we return back to the research to really question how each of those elements were thought about moving forward. We need light to see, but what had been seen and depicted on great Master's canvases should be protected from light. Should natural light be brought into the gallery spaces even though it damages works on canvas and paper? Can gallery spaces change over time to mirror the objects that they hold? Can the building reflect the area around the gallery but also act as a space of meditation and self-reflection? To adopt means to take another's child, but it can also mean to embrace an idea. In this case we are adopting the collection of William Corcoran and combining it with newer elements found in modern museums. On further evaluation of the gallery it has strong ties to historic D.C. because of its collection and its community outreach however its weakness was due in part of turning its back on the same community that made it strong. I propose moving the collection into the heart of Washington D.C. and combining it with newer ideas of light and gallery services. Associations of Civic Attitudes in Service Learning

Civic responsibility is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. Students enrolled at institutions of higher education have the opportunity to transform their social interests into advocacy through personal connections with the community. Service learning is an effective method of increasing citizenship participation and civic responsibility by incorporating community service activities with academic coursework. This study used survey research to examine the civic attitude scores of service learning students at a large, public, mid-Atlantic state university. The research questions attained information on the associations among students who perform written and discussion reflection activities (outside of class and in-class) regarding civic attitude by gender, class year, and grade point average. The associations between interest in future service participation and civic attitude were also examined. The data were collected using surveys. Crosstabulation procedures and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data. It was found that students who performed discussion reflection activities and reflected outside of class had higher civic attitude levels and more interest in future service participation. / Master of Arts

Grief and Healing Sanctuary

My thesis is an exploration of the emotional connection we have with architecture. The inspirations for the Grief and Healing Sanctuary were the healing experienced at quiet spaces of reflection and my father's stories as a Navy Vietnam shipboard combat veteran. I designed a building to provide a place for healing and to deal with grief. The building was designed for patients and their families being treated at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Not all families leave as they arrive. The families, many from out of town, need a place to reflect, pray, cry, or laugh. This need was reinforced by my father's stories of his transition from normal life to the extremes of combat to life back as a civilian. No one comes out unaffected, and there is not always a place to go and reflect. The Grief and Healing Sanctuary provides these spaces for all people who have these needs. / Master of Architecture

The effect of video-based reflection prompts on reflection level in a context-aware ubiquitous learning environment

Reflection is one of the most important factors that affects learning. A good learning strategy is supposed to improve a learner's reflection level. In addition, the past studies has proved u-learning can enhance learning performance, motivation and efficiency of learners. This study integrates these into learning activity of distinguishing vegetation, let learner reflect in u-learning environment. Almost of past researches promoted learners¡¦ reflection was by text-based. However, the limit of learning activity's character and mobile device¡¦s screen, the design of text-based promotes is confined. Therefore, this study proposes a video-based reflection prompts strategies in high media richness, and the Context-Aware Reflection Prompt System (CRPS) can detect learner¡¦s location by QR Code to provide appropriate guidance, facilitating learner to observe and reflect. Further to explore effects of reflection level and satisfaction between video-based and text-based reflection prompt strategies. This study recruited 70 college students to participate in this experiment, and divide into two groups of video-based and text- based reflection prompts. The results showed that the reflection level of the video-based reflection prompt group is significantly improved than of the text-based reflection prompt group; however, there was no differences found on the satisfaction. In addition, this study further investigated the learners¡¦ opinions and perspectives toward a video-based and a text-based reflection prompt strategy, and interviewed some learners to obtain the potential factors which may affect satisfaction.

Examining the Effects of Selected Computer-Based Scaffolds on Preservice Teachers' Levels of Reflection as Evidenced in their Online Journal Writing

This study used explanatory mixed methods to examine the effects of two computer-based reflection writing scaffolds, question prompts and writing process display, on preservice teachers’ levels of reflection in their online reflective journal writing. The scaffolds were embedded in a system simulating the Professional Accountability Support System Using a Portal Approach (PASS-PORT). The outcome measure was the level of reflection achieved in participants’ writing. The researcher collected data at the College of Education of a major southern university in the United States. Participants were undergraduate students enrolled in a technology integration course in fall 2007. Sixty-five preservice teachers participated in quantitative phase of the study; sixteen out of the 65 preservice teachers were purposefully selected to participate in qualitative phase of the study. The majority of the preservice teachers were white females between the ages of 20-29 in their junior year. During the quantitative phase of the study, participants in control group and two treatment groups were randomly and evenly assigned to one of three different Web pages associated with their treatment conditions. The participants reflected on a critical incident that happened during their practical teaching. Two raters, blind to the participants’ treatment conditions, coded the highest level of reflection achieved in their writing samples using the reflection rubric developed by Ward and McCotter (2004). The researcher employed ANOVA to assess the group differences in the highest level of reflection reached and in the length of the reflective writing in the number of words. The alpha level was set at .05 for all analyses. During the qualitative phase, the researcher conducted open-ended interviews with the participants as a follow-up to their reflection writing. The participants’ reflection writings and interviews served as data sources. Miles and Huberman's (1994) data analysis procedures guided the qualitative data analysis. The quantitative results indicated that computer-based scaffolds significantly enhanced preservice teachers’ levels of reflection in their online journal writing. Preservice teachers who used the scaffolds wrote longer reflection than those in the control group. Correlation analysis revealed that there was a positive relationship between the level of reflection and the length of journal writing. Three overarching factors emerged from the qualitative data analysis that explained how and why the computer-based scaffolds enhanced their reflective journal writing. The factors included (a) the specific requirements conveyed in the scaffolds; (b) the structure of the scaffolds; and (c) the use of the critical incidents to anchor reflective journal writing. How to improve preservice teachers’ critical reflection capability and skills remains an actively debated topic. Recent years have witnessed an emergence of research and development in Web-based educational systems to help prepare highly qualified teacher candidates. However, the articulative/reflective attribute of meaningful learning does not seem to be evident in most of these systems. Although there is considerable research on the potential for embedding scaffolds in technology-enhanced learning environments, mechanisms intended to facilitate reflective practice in such environments also seems to be lacking. In order to help fill this gap, it is hoped that the analyses and results of the current study can be used as a building block for research on how to leverage the affordances of computer-based scaffolds to enhance preservice teachers’ reflective practice in technology-enhanced educational systems.

Subtleties in Film Music : a cautious approach from a composer’s perspective

Examples of how subtleties in the film scores were intentionally implemented in relation to the films are provided to give the reader an insight to this specific topic. Microwave surface waves on metasurfaces with planar discontinuities

The work presented within this thesis details the experimental investigation of the surface waves supported on metasurfaces. Particular attention has been given to the reflection of these surface waves from planar discontinuities associated with these metasurfaces. Various experimental techniques have been developed throughout this work to characterise surface wave supporting metasurfaces. These include a new technique for measuring the dispersion of surface waves supported on metasurfaces, characterisation of the near-field associated with the surface waves, a device for launching planar phase front surface waves and finally a technique for measuring the surface wave reflection coefficient. The dispersion of surface waves on a square array of square cross-section metal pillars has been fully characterised and compared to FEM modelling. The results show that a family of surface waves may be supported by pillar or crossed slit structures rather than just holes even though there is now no lowest cut-off frequency. A family of TM surface modes have been shown to exist with dispersions which asymptote to frequencies defined by the pillar heights (slit depth) and the refractive index of the material filling the slits. Primarily this work focussed on the surface wave properties associated with a square array of square metal patches on a dielectric coated ground plane and a Sievenpiper `mushroom' metasurface. The amplitude reflection coefficient of these surface waves has been studied for three distinct systems: Firstly for surface waves incident upon the termination of a these metasurfaces to free space, secondly for surface waves incident upon the interface between a dielectric coated and uncoated metasurface and thirdly for surface waves incident on the boundary between two metaurfaces. The reflection coefficient of surface waves incident upon the termination of the metasurface to free space is found to increase significantly with the confinement of the surface mode. This confinement, and therefore the form of the reflection coefficient, is significantly different for the two metasurfaces considered due to their dispersions. This increase in the reflection coefficient is caused by both the momentum mismatch of the surface wave compared to the freely propagating modes and the different field distributions of the two modes. The reflection coefficient of surface waves incident upon the boundary between a coated and uncoated metasurface has been experimentally characterised for the metal patch array and Sievenpiper `mushroom' metasurfaces. It is shown that the addition of a thin, significantly subwavelength, dielectric overlayer onto the metasurface vastly perturbs the surface wave dispersion. The reflection coefficient of the surface waves is found to depend on the dispersion of the mode supported on the coated and uncoated metasurface and the overlayer thickness. Most noticeably the thickness of the overlayer, by comparison to the surface wave decay length, has a significant effect on scattering to free space associated with the surface wave reflection. The final system considered was designed to investigate the impedance approximation, often used to describe metasurfaces, and found it to be an incomplete description of the surface waves supported on the metasurfaces used within this study. In the impedance approximation the two surfaces considered are said to be `impedance matched` at certain frequencies. It is demonstrated that the failure of the impedance approximation to accurately describe this system is due to the behaviour of the electric field within the metasurfaces. These are not analytically described in the impedance approximation and are required for an accurate description of the surface waves supported on these metasurfaces.

In the Shadow of Illusion : Kant and Fink on the problem of philosophical reflection

With the help of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason this paper aims to investigate the very possibility of philosophical reflection. Starting from a reading of two Eugen Fink texts, a phenomenologically discovered question is posed and a critical response attempted. It will be shown how, by orienting itself upon the subjective feeling of reason’s demand for the unconditioned, critical thought is then able to restrict itself to a valid use of reason, thus securing its own possibility. The transcendental methodology employed by Kant and the concept of pure apperception will also be discussed as key components in the facilitation of philosophical reflection. The Kantian response offered here is largely centred around the concept of transcendental illusion as discussed in the ‘Transcendental Dialectic’ and by taking related concepts such as transcendental reflection into consideration it is subsequently shown that, despite being raised here phenomenologically, the question of philosophical reflection is very much of interest to critical thought.
