O estudo aqui proposto pretende atentar para a natureza da presença francesa na obra de Castro Alves. Trata-se da expansão da dissertação intitulada Projeções do romantismo pelas asas de um condor: a presença hugoana na obra de Castro Alves1, cujo objetivo principal consistiu em analisar, especificamente, a presença de Victor Hugo na produção castroalvina. Nessa nova fase, em decorrência dos variados procedimentos intertextuais encontrados, a investigação será conduzida aos diversos aspectos da presença francesa, e ao variado rol de referências literárias e culturais da obra do escritor. Para tanto, levaremos em conta os procedimentos textuais tais como epígrafes, citações e alusões, presentes em sua prosa e na poesia. Nosso objetivo é, portanto, realizar a leitura intertextual minuciosa dos textos selecionados2 com o fito de investigar qual o sentido das apropriações feitas, o que responde pela tarefa de revelar qual o papel da presença francesa nos textos alvesianos. / The study proposed here intends to look at the nature of the French presence in the work of Castro Alves. It is the expansion of the dissertation entitled Romanticism projections through the wings of a condor: the presence of Victor Hugo in Castro Alves works, whose main objective is to analyse especially the presence of Victor Hugo in the work of Castro Alves. At this new stage, as a consequence of the diverse intertextual procedures found, we have broadened the analysis to the several aspects of the French presence, as well as to the varied list of literary and cultural references which extolled the works of the writer of The Slaves. Therefore, we shall analyse the textual procedures such as epigraphs, quotations and allusions found in prose and poetry. Our objective is thus to accomplish the detailed analysis of the selected texts aiming to investigate the meaning of the appropriations used, what accounts for the task of explaining the role of the French presence in Castro Alves works.

Esta pesquisa consiste no estudo das relações culturais entre o Brasil e a França a partir da análise das crônicas literárias de José Brito Broca, publicadas exclusivamente em jornais e revistas do Brasil. O tema é abordado considerando a presença de escritores e intelectuais brasileiros na França e de escritores e intelectuais franceses no Brasil. Além de demonstrar a preocupação recorrente do crítico com as marcas francesas em nosso meio literário, este estudo fortalece a discussão das relações entre os dois países em diferentes momentos da história. / This research consists in surveying the cultural relationship between Brazil and France based on the analysis of José Brito Brocas literary chronicles which have been published exclusively in Brazilian newspapers and magazines. The research is carried out taking into account the presence of Brazilian writers and intelectuals living in France as well as French writers and intelectuals located in Brazil. It demonstrates the critics recurrent concern for the French signs in our literary enviroment. Furthermore, it strengthens the discussion of the relationship between the two countries in different moments of History.

A tradução de uma obra literária a introduz em um novo contexto lingüístico e cultural, renovando os diálogos entre as sociedades. As opções dos adutores na solução de problemas de ordem lingüístico e cultural, as opções dos editores quanto ao formato e à aparência do objeto livro oferecido ao grande público, o teor das críticas dos especialistas são indicadores da maneira pela qual uma cultura se apropria da obra traduzida e revelam a imagem que sociedade receptora tem ou mantém da cultura de origem do texto original. A presente tese de doutorado procura analisar a recepção da obra traduzida de Rubem Fonseca na França por meio da interpretação de material textual e paratextual, atentando para os diversos tipos de leitura realizados dessa obra até chegar ao leitor estrangeiro: leitura da crítica especializada, dos editores e dos tradutores, leitores privilegiados. / The translation of a literary work introduces it into a new linguistic and cultural context, renewing the dialogues between the societies involved. Translators? choices for the solution of linguistic and cultural problems, blishers? options concerning the format and appearance of the book as an object offered to the general public, and the nature of specialists? critiques are indicators of the way the target-language culture appropriates the translated work and they reveal the image that the receiving society has or maintains of the source-language culture. The present Ph.D thesis aims at analyzing the reception of the translations of Rubem Fonsecas?s work in France through the interpretation of textual and paratextual material, considering the different kinds of reading of the work before that of the foreign reader: readings by specialized critics, publishers and translators, these being considered privileged readers.

A escritora brasileira Clarice Lispector e a francesa Alice Ferney, embora oriundas de contextos sócio-históricos diferentes, apresentam muitos pontos em comum em seus romances Uma aprendizagem ou o Livro dos prazeres e La conversation amoureuse. As duas autoras abordam o mesmo tema (o amor e o encontro amoroso) entremeando-o de leitmotiven semelhantes (as questões relativas à alteridade; o papel que a linguagem exerce sobre as relações humanas; os embates sujeito-linguagem; o silêncio como contraparte necessária da palavra), com soluções formais que diferem no todo, mas aproximam-se nos detalhes. Este estudo é uma leitura comparativa entre as duas obras e visa mostrar como as autoras abordam o tema do amor, que tem longa tradição na literatura ocidental, e como o reatualizam a partir de recursos formais de uma literatura em crise. A leitura aqui apresentada coloca em evidência as semelhanças que aproximam e as diferenças que individualizam as obras, observando-as e comparando-as de um ponto de vista temático-morfológico. / The Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector and the French writer Alice Ferney, yet coming from different socio-historical contexts, present many common aspects in their novels Uma aprendizagem ou o Livro dos prazeres and La conversation amoureuse. Both writers deal with the same theme (love and the love encounter), filling the novels up with similar leitmotiven (questions concerning alterity; the role language exerts on human relations; the clash subject-language; silence as a necessary counterpart of word), with formal solutions that are different on the whole, but have similarities in the particularities. This study is a comparative reading between the two aforementioned works and aims at showing how the authors deal with the theme of Love, which has a long tradition in Western literature, and how they re-actualize it from certain formal resources of a literature in crisis. This reading puts in evidence the similarities that approximate and the differences that individualize the works, observing and comparing them from a thematic-morphologic perspective.

Roland Barthes nunca colocou os pés em território brasileiro. O que não quer dizer que ele nunca tenha estado no Brasil: seus escritos, carregados com suas ideias, suas noções, seus paradoxos e suas idas e vindas, trataram de assegurar sua presença na história da crítica literária brasileira do século XX. As relações entre Barthes e os intelectuais constituem o tema deste trabalho, que tem por objetivo encontrar, descrever e problematizar as imagens do escritor francês, produtos de sua recepção no Brasil, de 1953, data da publicação do primeiro livro de Barthes, Le Degré zéro de lécriture, até o momento atual. Efeitos de um processo de refração, tais imagens não se limitam a reproduzir a dinâmica do pensamento barthesiano, mas também evidenciam as particularidades do contexto e dos intelectuais que delas se apropriaram. Pois a periodização estudada compreende um momento de transição na história da crítica brasileira que a recepção à obra do escritor torna evidente: a consolidação das instituições universitárias, nos anos 50 e 60, abriu um novo espaço para os debates literários, antes limitados aos jornais. A crítica literária e as discussões teóricas, até esse momento, dominadas por críticos de formação autodidata, passaram a, paulatinamente, constituir uma preocupação dos professores universitários. A proposta deste trabalho é examinar como o pensamento de Barthes foi integrado nesse contexto, tendo como fio condutor e corpus principal o jornal O Estado de S. Paulo, complementado pela revista universitária Língua e Literatura. Tendo sido primeiro comentado pela crítica jornalística para, em seguida, tornar-se objeto de uma crítica universitária, o pensamento barthesiano transparece sob a forma de imagens parciais que, ao final do percurso investigatório, compõem um mosaico heterogêneo e complexo. Incompreendido, mestre estruturalista da nouvelle critique, semiólogo e guru nas universidades, hedonista, subversivo: em cada imagem pulsa uma faceta de Barthes, num movimento constante, engendrando novas leituras e a escrita de novos textos, e assim circulando, viva. / Roland Barthes never placed his feet on Brazilian territory. Which is not to say that he has never been in Brazil: his writings, full of his ideas, his concepts, his paradoxes and his comings and goings, treated to ensure his presence in the history of Brazilian literary criticism of the twentieth century. The relations between Barthes and intellectuals are the subject of this work, which aims to find, describe and discuss the images of the French writer, products of his reception in Brazil, from 1953, the publication date of Barthes first book, Le Degré zéro de l\'écriture, until the present time. Effects of a refraction process, such images do not merely reproduce the dynamics of Barthesian thought, but also highlight the particularities of the context and intellectuals who have appropriated of them. As the periodization studied comprises a transition moment in the history of Brazilian criticism that the reception to the work of the writer becomes evident: the consolidation of the university institutions in the 50s and 60s opened a new space for literary debates, once limited to newspapers. Literary criticism and theoretical discussions, so far dominated by self-taught critical, began, gradually, a concern of academics. The proposition of this thesis is to examine how Barthes thoughts were integrated in this context, having as a guiding thread, and the main corpus, the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, complemented by the university journal Língua e Literatura. Having first been discussed by the journalistic critics and later becoming a subject of academic criticism, Barthesian thought emerges in the form of partial images that, at the end of the investigative path, composes a heterogeneous and complex mosaic. Misunderstood, struturalist master of nouvelle critique, semiotician and guru in universities, hedonistic, subversive: in each image pulsates a facet of Barthes in a steady movement, engendering new readings and the writing of new texts, and thus circulating, alive.

Um dos aspectos privilegiados neste trabalho é o envolvimento do cronista com o comparatismo literário proveniente da escola francesa. Estudamos desde suas obras mais conhecidas, como A vida literária no Brasil, até livros ainda pouco explorados. Studied since its best-known works such as the literary life in Brazil, even books are still undeveloped. René de Castro Thiollier (1884-1968), advogado e jornalista paulista, publicou contos, estudos histórico-biográficos, crônicas e ensaios, além de um romance, estampado nas páginas da Revista da Academia Paulista de Letras, que não chegou a terminar. Esteve presente em dois dos mais representativos eventos de nosso Modernismo: a Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922 e a famosa viagem de redescoberta do Brasil em 1924. A proposta deste trabalho é analisar sua produção literária Senhor Dom Torres e A Louca do Juqueri, contos, e Folheando a Vida, o romance inacabado a partir do exame dos suportes de publicação (o objeto livro), dos paratextos e da configuração das instâncias narrativas. Há em Senhor Dom Torres, impresso em 1921, traços que anunciem os experimentos estéticos que despontarão nos anos subsequentes à Semana? As conquistas modernistas, resultado do árduo embate travado ao longo da década de 1920, têm lugar em A Louca do Juqueri, lançado em 1938, e em Folheando a Vida, cuja edição, em forma de folhetim, atravessa os anos quarenta? Vigorosas na primeira metade do século XX, as relações literárias Brasil-França, redobradas pela ascendência francesa de René Thiollier, evidenciam-se nestas obras. Por conseguinte, enumerar e analisar as referências aos escritores de língua francesa (dentre os quais sobressai o autor da Histoire contemporaine, Anatole France) citados nas narrativas ou à margem delas, em epígrafe também faz parte do escopo deste trabalho. / René de Castro Thiollier (1884-1968), lawyer and journalist born in São Paulo, Brazil, wrote short stories, historical/biographical studies, chronicles and essays, in addition to one novel, published on the pages of Revista da Academia Paulista de Letras, which was left unfinished. He was present at two of the most representative events of our Modernism: the Modern Art Week, in 1922, and the famous voyage to rediscover Brazil, in 1924. The purpose of the present study is to analyze his literary production Senhor Dom Torres and A Louca do Juqueri, which are short stories, and Folheando a Vida, his unfinished novel based on the examination of the publication means (the object book), of the paratexts, and of the configuration of the storytelling instances. In Senhor Dom Torres, printed in 1921, are there traces that anticipate the aesthetic experiments that will emerge in the years following the Modern Art Week? Are the modernist advances, a result of the fierce confrontation held during the 20´s, present in A Louca do Juqueri, published in 1938, and in Folheando a Vida, which was published in chapters in a magazine during the 40´s? Vigorous in the first half of the 20th century, the literary relations between Brazil and France, emphasized by René Thiollier´s French ancestry, are evident in his works. Therefore, the listing and analysis of the references to French-speaking writers (among which Anatole France, author of Histoire contemporaine, stands out) mentioned in the texts or marginally, in epigraphs is also part of the scope of this project.
