Communicate to collaborate: reframing communication to strengthen parent-practitioner collaborative relationships

Brussa, Ana K. 10 September 2021 (has links)
Effective communication with the parents of pediatric clients is considered an essential skill and encompasses the verbal exchanging of ideas, listening, and non-verbal communication (Taylor, 2020). Similarly, the therapeutic use of self is integral to the practice of occupational therapy and consists of the conscious enhancement of communication through the use of planned strategies for intentional client-therapist interactions (Taylor, 2020). However, many occupational therapy practitioners report communication challenges, such as parent emotional expressions (Andrews et al., 2013) and discussing parent roles and expectations (Kruijsen-Terpstra et al., 2016 ), and implementing the therapeutic use of self in practice (Bonsaksen et al., 2013). Furthermore, factors such as the limited availability of communication skills training, a limited understanding of how to practice reflection to enhance communication self-awareness (King et al., 2017), and decreased self-efficacy (Coad et al., 2018) hinder the opportunity for practitioners to enhance their communication competencies. The following chapters discuss the evidence base and guiding theories informing the development of the proposed program, Communicate to Collaborate. Communicate to Collaborate is a communication skills training that aims to strengthen pediatric therapy practitioners’ interpersonal communication skills so that how they communicate with families becomes an active, mediating ingredient in their therapy interventions. Through program participation, it is anticipated practitioners will gain greater awareness of both their personal communication approaches and parent’s communication preferences and increased self-efficacy in how to communicate intentionally with parents, thus enhancing their therapeutic use of self in practice and improving the quality of family-centered pediatric therapy services.

Development and Applications of Ocean Ambient Noise Database around Taiwan

Wu, Chih-Hao 26 August 2009 (has links)
Ocean ambient noise is one of the important parameters which affect sonar system performance. If the ocean ambient noise is estimated accurately, the prediction accuracy of sonar system performance can be promoted significantly. Ocean ambient noise includes various and diverse sources, so the characteristics of the ocean ambient noise should be analyzed by long-term observations and statistical methods. Therefore, ocean ambient noise database was developed to facilitate management, preservation, and application of these datasets which increase with time. There were two datasets of acoustic and three datasets of wind speed in this database at this point. To develop this database systematically, this study applied Entity-Relationship Model to describe the relationship between different data and Relational Model to design the required categories. The database was constructed based on Microsoft Office Access, and user-friendly graphical interfaces based on MATLAB were provided for users: wind speed regression, time series, spectrogram, and spectrum tendency for users to query the database. As the results of analysis, the intermittent, unknown, and high-level sources at southwestern sea of Taiwan in spring and summer made the noise level of low frequency about 8 to 10 dB higher in the night-time than that in the day-time. According to wind speed regression analysis, if there were sufficient data, the method would be practicable to pick a wind speed data nearby the location of acoustic data for noise estimation. As the results of the typhoon effects analysis, the noise level of 1 to 8 kHz was increased significantly by typhoons. Besides, the noise level didn¡¦t decrease immediately and significantly after the pass of typhoon because of southwestern air current caused typhoon. After the database was developed, new acoustic data will keep being measured and collected, and the network capability will be integrated into the database to make the database more accessible to users.

The Occupational Therapist´s Therapeutic Use of Self with Parents Who Have a Child with Disabilities - A literature review

Ström, Isabella January 2017 (has links)
I familjecentrerat arbete involverar arbetsterapeuten föräldrarna i barnets terapiprocess. / Children with disabilities tend to have difficulties with participating and engaging in activities. Occupational therapists who work in family-centered care involve the parents in the children´s therapy process. This is because the parents have knowledge about the family situation and they also know about factors in the children’s life which the occupational therapist needs to recognize. The purpose of this study was to map the occupational therapist’s approach to parents in family-centered care in cases which involve children with disabilities. More specifically, the study described the occupational therapist´s interaction with parents based on the Intentional Relationship Model (IRM). Also, it described positive and negative interpersonal events in the occupational therapist´s interaction with parents based on each relationship. This was a literature review, and a database search was made in PsycINFO, PubMed and Cinahl. IRM was used in the analysis to review the occupational therapist´s interaction and to determine whether it was empathizing, collaborating, problem-solving, encouraging, instructing or advocating. The results showed that occupational therapists used all of the approaches in IRM. Collaborating and empathizing occurred more than the other types of interaction, while encouraging and advocating occurred the least. The study has shown that the occupational therapist's choice of approach is important in order to avoid any negative interpersonal events that can have an impact on the therapeutic relationship. Connections occur between parents of another ethnicity and negative interpersonal events. The study also highlighted that knowledge about the different approaches should be expanded. In particular, knowledge about how and when to use a specific approach should be examined.

This study sought to meet general measure goal of measuring the level of satisfaction with the digital relationship model customers of Banco do Brasil Exclusive Business Offices situated in Rio Grande do Sul. Data download on the move in visible light communications:design and analysis

Chowdhury, H. (Helal) 22 November 2016 (has links)
Abstract In visible light communication (VLC), light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used as transmitters; the air is the transmission medium and the photodiodes are used for receivers. This is often referred to as light fidelity (Li-Fi). In this thesis, we provide the methodology to evaluate the performance of VLC hotspot networks in the context of data downloading on the move scenarios by using throughput-distance relationship models. In this context, first we study the different properties of optical transceiver elements, noise sources, characterization and modelling of artificial light interference, different link topologies and then we introduce the throughput-distance relationship model. Secondly, the analytically based throughput-distance relationship has been developed for evaluating the performance of VLC hotspot networks in indoor environment in both day and night conditions. Simulation results reveal that background noise has a significant impact on the performance of VLC hotspots. As expected, in both indoor and outdoor environments the VLC hotspot performs better at night than during day. The performance of VLC hotspot networks is also quantified in terms of received file size at different bit error rate requirements and velocities of the mobile user. Thirdly, we study the performance of hybrid (Radio-Optical) WLAN-VLC hotspot and compare its performance with stand-alone VLC-only or WLAN-only hotspot cases. In this case, we also consider the data download on the move scenarios in an indoor environment for a single-user as well as for multi-user cases. In this hybrid WLAN-VLC hotspot, both the WLAN and the VLC are characterized by their throughput and communication range. Simulations have been performed to evaluate the performance of such network for data downloading on the move scenario by taking into account performance metrics such as filesize, average connectivity and system throughput. Simulation results reveal that the considered hybrid WLAN-VLC performs always better than stand-alone VLC-only or WLAN-only hotspot both for a single and multi-user cases. Finally, this thesis analyses the feasibility and potential benefits of using hybrid radio-optical wireless systems. In this respect, cooperative communication using optical relays are also introduced in order to increase the coverage and energy efficiency of the battery operated device. Potential benefits are identified as service connectivity and energy efficiency of battery operated device in an indoor environment. Simulation results reveal that user connectivity and energy efficiency depend on user density, coverage range ratio between single-hop and multi-hop, relay probabilities and mobility of the user. Näiden verkkojen suorituskykyä arvioitaessa on tehty joukko tietokonesimulointeja verkossa tapahtuvasta tietojen lataamisesta liikkeessä ottamalla huomioon suorituskyvyn mittarit kuten tiedoston koko, keskimääräinen yhteyden kesto ja saavutettu läpäisy.

The design of a database of resources for rational therapy

Steyn, Genevieve Lee 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to design a database of resources for rational therapy. An investigation of the current health situation and reorientation towards primary health care (PHC) in South Africa evidenced the need for a database of resources which would meet the demand for rational therapy information made on the Helderberg College Library by various user groups as well as make a contribution to the national health information infrastructure. Rational therapy is viewed as an approach within PHC that is rational, common-sense, wholistic and credible, focusing on the prevention and maintenance of health. A model of the steps in database design was developed. A user study identified users' requirements for design and the conceptual schema was developed. The entities, attributes, relationships and policies were presented and graphically summarised in an Entity-Relationship (E-R) diagram. The conceptual schema is the blueprint for further design and implementation of the database. / Information Science / M.Inf.
