Playing the villain : understanding the punishment and portrayal of terroristsSpens, Christiana January 2017 (has links)
Playing the Villain argues that the portrayal and punishment of terrorists in the Western media perpetuates colonialist attitudes, due to the visual connections between these modern images and past or fictional representations of iconic, punished villains. A theory of scapegoating related to intervisuality supports this argument, by explaining that as a ritual dependent on and developed by cultural history and mythology, scapegoating requires engagement with recognisable visual motifs that repeat and perpetuate Western, colonialist attitudes. Underlying, repeated narrative patterns ensure that the scapegoating ritual functions in a way that is cathartic and builds national unity following social crisis. This need for catharsis requires that there be a scapegoated villain whose demise may be celebrated, and that the villain is objectified and fetishised through visual representation and spectacle.

The semiotic function : studies in children's representationsTamm, Maare January 1990 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis was to explore if there existed one single underlying semiotic function for representation. The problem was examined from both a theoretical and an empirical point of view. In the first part of this thesis the theoretical considerations about Piaget's hypothesis of a single semiotic function are described and compared with a number of alternative approaches. The hypothesis is critically analyzed and its limitations are pointed out. In the second part of this thesis the empirical studies are reported. One of the guiding lines for the experiments performed was the distinction made by Piaget between figurative and operative aspects of representation. The main conclusions to be drawn from the four studies were that they all supported, however tentatively, Piagets hypothesis of a single underlying semiotic function. In terms of figurative and operative aspects of cognition it was concluded that the underlying form (the operative aspect) at different ages is constant across the different representation modes. The differences found in the figurative aspect of representation were bound to the representation media, and could vary as a function of media, task demands and individual differences. In the third part of this thesis problems with representation media and task demands are discussed together with research in related areas of the semiotic function. The general conclusions drawns from this thesis were that there might exist a single underlying semiotic function for representation. The issue is neither simple nor uncomplicated. The distinction made between the figurative and operative aspect of representation is considered as one attempt to narrow down the generality of the hypothesis, and to distinguish between what is expected to be a universal aspect of the semiotic function and what varies as a function of media, task demands and individual-, social- , and cultural differences. / digitalisering@umu

Prezentace syrských uprchlíků v tureckých masmédiích / Representation of Syrian refugees in the Turkish mainstream mediaÖztaş, Uygar January 2021 (has links)
There has been an increase in the number of people migrating around the world in recent decades. The main reasons for this migration are mostly social pressures, conflicts, and wars. With the Arab spring, which showed its effect in the early 2010s, a civil war arose in Syria. With the civil war that had its influence in Syria in 2011, thousands of people had to take shelter in Turkey. With the rapid increase in Syrian refugees who took refuge in Turkey, this issue has become vital in Turkey's agenda. Many studies on the media and the representation of immigrants and refugees show that these groups are often negatively represented. In this research, news about Syrian refugees published in Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, and Sabah newspapers, among the best-selling newspapers in Turkey, are examined. In addition, the fact that the three selected newspapers have different political stances, this situation adds sample diversity to this research. June 2011 - March 2012 and June 2016 - March 2017 constitute the times of the sample. The first time sample represents the early times of both the Syrian Civil war and the arrivals of Syrian refugees in Turkey. In contrast, the second time sample represents the time that Syrian refugees are more integrated into Turkish society and not a new subject for Turkey anymore....

Post-produced cultures : meta-images, aesthetics and the HawzasFusari, Massimiliano January 2013 (has links)
The present work explores my practice as a photojournalist researching anthropological issues in the Muslim world. I use the Hawzas, the Muslim Shi’a seminaries, as my case study to invite a visually informed approach to the human sciences, and promote a practical usage of aesthetics. Because of the dramatic disproportion between socio-cultural relevance and under-representation, the Hawzas offer an extremely valuable opportunity to research issues of Orientalism and Orientalist visual archives. By questioning my own fieldwork practice alongside the visual signification of the Hawzas, I reconnect the pre-production to the post-production phase, and encompass within it a shared outlook issues of both the Real and the represented. I posit the photograph within wider multimedia and multi-audience practices as a stand-alone communicative device and part of a montage to assess its communicative features in relation to the verbal as a caption, and to the visual, in montage. Through this, I distinguish a phenomenological framework of analysis to urge a radical rethinking of personal and social agencies, and suggest the notion of communicative hubs for today’s globalised identities. I evince the extent to which the digital is reshaping forms of visual-led and multimedia production, knowledge distribution and media consumption to finally contextualise the photograph as ‘semantics without ontology.’ I conclude by advocating my ideas of the ‘Meta- Image’ and ‘Public Cultures 2.0’ as two integrated formats for visual-led communication, digital media practice, social engagement and public impact as specifically addressing Muslim cultures.

Česká krajní pravice v médiích a ve veřejném mínění / Czech far-right in massmedia and in public opinionAvukatu, Jiřina January 2015 (has links)
6 Abstract This thesis deals with the presentation of the Czech far-right in mass media and in connection with selected chapters of public opinion in 2011-2013. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of three parts, a part that presents the far-right in Czech and international context, a part representing the relationship of the far-right and mass media, and a part describing the situation of research of far-right in the Czech Republic. The second part of the thesis analyses the profile of the far-right in the media through content analysis and the reflection of far-right in public opinion using secondary data analysis. The results indicate far-right gains entry into the media content through the use of protest activities. Strong themes of the far-right agenda resonate in the Czech public opinion, but at the same time the Czech public opinion perceives the far-right as a serious security risk and a threat to democracy, which makes it an unacceptable alternative.

Vem är kvinnan i ELLE? : En kvantitativ studie av hur kvinnan framställs i ELLE Sverige (2013).Ohlson, Elin, Sjögren, Alexandra January 2015 (has links)
Who is the most typical woman in ELLE Sweden (2013)? In this study we investigated the typical woman represented in the Swedish fashion magazine ELLE (2013) for women. Does a typical woman exist in the magazine at all and if so – in what words and roles is she described in? How is this woman perceived in relation to the male gender? Based on the theory of constructionism; that the gender (i.e. What is female versus male) is constructed in the society and that media has an affect on our physical and psychological well being as well as our behavior and thoughts, the investigation of the female gender representation in women magazines, was of great importance to us. As our instrument in this study we used a quantitative content analysis in the purpose of gathering information from 24 reportages (12 issues of ELLE Sweden 2013) where 27 female celebrities in total were interviewed. According to our final results there is a very clear and typical representation of the woman in ELLE Sweden. Among other things she is a successful, white, western, career woman in the entertainment- or fashion industry who is ”beautiful” with blonde hair, lives in the city and admirers the opposite sex.

FOOD IMMERSION. LE RAPPRESENTAZIONI DEL CIBO E DEL RISCHIO ALIMENTARE NELLA SFERA PUBBLICA / FOOD IMMERSION. LE RAPPRESENTAZIONI DEL CIBO E DEL RISCHIO ALIMENTARE NELLA SFERA PUBBLICA / FOOD IMMERSION. SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS OF FOOD AND RISK IN THE PUBLIC SPHERERUBIN, ANDREA 17 May 2018 (has links)
Thesis work consists in empirical research on the communication of the food theme, in a
techno-scientific framework. Recently, nutrition has been linked to a lot of interests:
social, economical, industrial, commercial, political, media but also scientific ones.
These are significant issues that concern the public opinion and attract the media
attention. In a society that revolves strongly around media, it becomes relevant to observe how the public discourse on themes like food and nutrition is being shaped among the public sphere. In addition, the rising of several techno-scientific projects that concern the field of nutrition cannot help but suggest to look at nutrition, and its symbolism, like a privileged object through which one can also observe the existing ties
between science, technology and society. This study started by exploring the
characteristics of the narrative of the food theme and its presence in the public arena
through an analysis of the main Italian daily newspapers. One former longitudinal
analysis, in the time-span 1992-2013, found- through an innovative tool of textual
analysis ( topic detection)- the presence of some emerging themes. Next, we shifted our
attention to the last period (2010-2016), with the aim to focus on the majority of the
recent events and to verify whether the media discourse on food and nutrition gained
new relevance or forms in the media agenda and in the public discussion. The research
work is composed of two other different kind of analysis: on the one hand, it will discuss the emerging results from three focus groups that provided useful indications on the relationship between food, media and the public opinion; on the other hand, we sought to identify a relation between media coverage and the attitudes of the public opinion by adopting a “risk indicator” and the data from certain European surveys.
