The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland : fieldwork, rescue and archiveSobolewski, Richard January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the role and work of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland from a geographical perspective in the period 1908 – c.1975, with especial reference to the historical geographies behind the production of the national inventory of Scotland’s ancient and historic built monuments. The thesis examines the sites of practice where the Commission produced the national inventory to explore the doing of the inventory. Fieldwork is a central concern of the thesis. Attention is paid to the spatial aspects of Commission’s work both in the field “out there” and in the office “in here”. The thesis discusses the methods and technologies which fostered the development of fieldwork practices rooted in the office and in the field. The Commission was always ‘doing fieldwork’ and this thesis brings into focus the relationship between the different spaces and places where the Commission undertook what might be labelled as work in the field. The thesis is comprised of nine chapters. An introduction and literature review are followed by an examination of the history of antiquarianism relevant to the establishment of the Commission. A further two chapters provide an overview of the Commission’s history, arranged chronologically, and its archive, understood in relation to relevant archival theory. Three chapters consider the development of the Commission with particular attention paid to fieldwork techniques and methods, the development of rescue archaeology, and the associated technologies which facilitated the Commission’s work within a rescue paradigm before turning, finally, to examine the Commission’s database, Canmore. Examining the Commission in this manner has drawn attention to the ways in which geographers and others conceive of fieldwork and how the development of the Commission was inherently linked to ways of doing work in the field. Through examining the history and geography of the Commission’s work the concern of this thesis is to study how ‘antiquarian research’ was carried out in the field “in here” and “out there” simultaneously. The thesis suggests that narrow definitions of fieldwork overlook the nuances of how ancient Scotland was revealed through suites of different practice. The thesis argues that more fine-grained approaches to understanding the how of the doing of fieldwork might lead to reconceptualisation of the place of work in the field, recognising that different practices helped constitute both ancient and historical Scotland as the object of the Commission’s work and the Commission itself.

Pripravenosť zložiek integrovaného záchranného systému na mimoriadne udalosti s veľkým počtom ranených a obetí v Slovenskej republike. / Emergency preparedness of the Integrated Rescue System and its bodies for sudden accidents associated with a large number of injuries and victims in SlovakiaPAVKOVIČOVÁ, Andrea January 2014 (has links)
The main topic of the thesis is the readiness for emergencies with a large number of injured and victims of the bodies of IRS in the SR. The work is divided into two main parts, theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part of the work several bodies of the IRS in the SR, which participate during rescue and clean-up operations, are introduced. The basic bodies of the rescue system are described in detail, other bodies and bodies of the Police Force are described in brief. The work also includes categories of emergencies and brief information of disaster medicine as well. At the end, the theoretical part addresses the problem of sorting the injured by history through the categories and types of selection, sorting methods "START" and JumpSTART, a sorting card, and organization of activities in the place of an event associated with the "triage" procedures. Empirical part consists of research to determine theoretical knowledge of selected bodies of the IRS on the issue of triage. The main aim of this work was to determine the theoretical readiness of selected bodies of the IRS Fire and Rescue Service and Emergency Medical Service in the SR, confirm the need for continuous training and the organization of tactical exercises focused on mass disaster and work out and propose the same procedure of sorting the injured in incidents with a large number of injured and victims. Two hypotheses related to the theoretical readiness of selected bodies associated with sorting the injured in an emergency were established. The first assumption was that paramedics have better scope of theoretical knowledge about handling with emergencies, particularly sorting the injured than members of the Fire and Rescue Service. The second assumption was that the bodies of IRS have better knowledge about the system of sorting the injured "START" than the system "JumpSTART". Basic statistic method that allowed confirmation or refutation of hypotheses two-stage test is described in the chapter too. The methodology describes a method of data collection using a questionnaire, describes the statistical methods in detail and enriches it with the determination of basic empirical parameters and their comparison. The found discrepancies were expressed as a percentage. Data to confirm hypotheses were collected from paramedics and members of the Fire and Rescue Service. Only one hypothesis was confirmed. Empirical investigation showed that theoretical knowledge about the issue "triage" are at a much higher level in paramedics than members of the Fire and Rescue Service. Another observation was that the selected bodies do not show a difference in knowledge about the classification of adults and children, when considered together. There would be a big difference if they were compared individually. The results identified weaknesses in knowledge particularly among members of the Fire and Rescue Service and, therefore, detailed procedure for "triage" in emergencies was proposed. It will serve as a tool primarily for members of the Fire and Rescue Service as well as a study material for university graduates in the field of emergency health care. The need for emergency medical service was designed rescue bag with aids for primary triage. The need for continuous training was observed, particularly among members of the Fire and Rescue Service, who lack the information and skills. Organizing tactical exercises especially for paramedics with the possibility of cooperation with members of the Fire and Rescue Service was proposed as well. In the light of these findings, we recommend making effort to address the deficiencies in the theoretical preparedness through the organizing of continuing education, prepare similar questionnaires for verifying knowledge after the seminars, organize training of practical skills and verify knowledge through participation in exercises on dealing with catastrophe, together with the other emergency bodies.

Factual evaluation of rescue feasibility : a reasonable prospect approachJanse van Rensburg, Andria Cornelia January 2016 (has links)
Orientation: As required by various sections in The Companies Act 71 of 2008, the appointed practitioner in a rescue must place before the court facts proving reasonable prospect; this is mainly determined through the subjective thought process of the practitioners who rely on his/her experience and knowledge in rescue and/or business management. This appears in direct contrast to the requirements set out by several court cases. There are many questions surrounding the determination of reasonable prospect as there is no benchmark for business rescue practitioners to work towards or a prescribed process to be followed.
Research purpose: This article investigates different methods available to business rescue practitioners to factually determine (initial) reasonable prospect and guide the decision making process during the initial stages of the rescue.
Motivation for the study: Business rescue is still in its infancy and reasonable prospect is one of the many vague but yet mandatory for initiating business rescue procedures. A better understanding of reasonable prospect and possible ways to factually measure it will contribute greatly to the business rescue regime.
Research design and approach: The research studied numerous methods of determining financial distress and decline (literature) as well as relevant cases (law) of rescue accepted or declined in court, on the basis of reasonable prospect. Triangulation of findings assisted to conclude on a series of possible tools to be utilised during the business rescue process.
Main findings: Reasonable prospect is mainly based on the practitioner's experience and opinion. Factually proving reasonable prospect remains difficult due to the presence of information asymmetry and the liability of data integrity. Due diligence is important and academic methods of determining financial distress/decline/position mostly serve as a communication tool to creditors.
Practical/managerial implications: Business rescue practitioners and other affected parties could benefit from the insights obtained through this study. Confirming possible methods that could assist with the factual determination of (initial) reasonable prospect can contribute to business rescue education/ development as well as avoid the current conflict that surround the subject. Practical benefits for affected parties that must use reasonable prospect are also proposed.
Contribution/value add: Identifying relevant methods of determining (initial) reasonable prospect may contribute to the better understanding of business rescue and possibly help future education of BRP's. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / tm2016 / Business Management / MCom / Unrestricted

Improving Ad-Hoc Team Performance Using Video GamesCraighead, Jeff David 13 July 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examined the effects of distributed, multiplayer training video games on the performance of distributed teams of robot operators. Two hypotheses were tested, the first hypothesis stated that online, game-based team training will improve the performance of an ad-hoc team versus an ad-hoc team formed of individually trained teammates. The second hypothesis stated that the fractal dimension of a robot's path can be used as an indicator of its operator's skill. Forty-one volunteers participated in an experiment in which they played a distributed, online training game which showed them the basics of operating an Inuktun Extreme VGTV for a search task. The participants were divided into two groups, one group trained in pairs as a team while the other group trained individually. The results showed that team training has no effect on the number of items found in a search by an ad-hoc team; however, team training does significantly impact the amount of information sharing between team members. The results also showed that the fractal dimension of a robot's path is quadratically related to the operator's effectiveness in a search task. Additionally, a participant's age and prior video game experience are related to their score obtained in a search task using a robot.
