Creating mindfulness with sensual functional handmade ceramicsUnknown Date (has links)
I create opportunities for nourishment that are physical, emotional and spiritual with my functional porcelain vessels. They reference the human body's sensual curves, dimples, and bulges, establishing the experience of eating as a metaphor for the sensual experience of human interaction. The tactility is heightened by the variety of glazes dancing around the vessels, from satiny smooth and skin-like, to wet and dripping. Handmade vessels connect the users not only more deeply to the food that provides them nourishment, but also connects them more deeply to one another, and to the maker of the work. The slow, deliberate work of making one-of-a-kind objects is similar to the act of carefully preparing a homemade meal, and in turn, dedicating time to the ritual of sitting down together to enjoy that meal. Whether I'm working in my studio creating vessels, or in my kitchen creating a meal, I derive the same experience of spiritual wellbeing. In these moments I am completely present and mindful. / by Alexandria Schwartz. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Depressão materna associada a múltiplos estressores e a socialização de crianças em idade escolar / Association of maternal depression with multiple stressors and socialization of schoolchildrenFernanda Aguiar Pizeta 11 May 2009 (has links)
In view of its peculiarities, recurrent maternal depression is associated with other chronic adverse conditions, resulting in diverse family scenarios that have a different impact on families and on the socialization of schoolchildren. The objective of this study was to characterize by means of case studies the socialization context of schoolchildren whose mothers have recurrent depression associated with diverse family scenarios. The personal resources and adversities of children, their families and social support network were compared, with emphasis on children presenting different profiles in terms of school performance and behavior expressed as the presence or absence of socialization difficulties. Eight mother-child pairs were studied, including women aged 25 to 45 years with a diagnosis of recurrent depression and children of both genders ranging in age from seven to 12 years, four with difficulties in socialization and four without such difficulty. Difficulties in socialization were defined in the case of schoolchildren who presented problems related to school performance and behavioral problems. The following instruments were applied to the mothers: (a) a diagnostic interview for the confirmation of recurrent depressive disorder characterized by moderate or severe episodes; (b) a semi-structured interview on the impact of depression on family life, with a script regarding resources and adversities in the family environment and key processes of resilience; (c) scales evaluating resources and adversities in the family environment, and (d) a questionnaire regarding the childs skills and abilities. The children were evaluated regarding their intellectual ability and school performance. For analysis of the results, the data obtained for the mothers and children were combined in case studies which were divided into scenarios according to the contextual conditions associated with maternal depression. The following four scenarios were identified: (a) maternal depression as the main stressor; (b) maternal depression mainly associated with precarious socioeconomic conditions; (c) maternal depression mainly associated with marital conflicts, and (d) maternal depression mainly associated with paternal psychopathology and family disharmony. One child with socialization difficulties and one child without such difficulty were included in each scenario. The cases and scenarios were analyzed using key processes of resilience as a reference in order to identify similarities and differences. In cases in which the children presented socialization difficulties, maternal depression had a negative impact on family belief systems, communication processes and family organizational patterns, which was aggravated by the presence of other chronic stressors. The processes of resilience, which may have minimized the impact of adversities, were related to maternal compliance with treatment, flexible routines, affective participation of the parents in daily family life, maternal sensitivity regarding the needs of her children, and the presence and use of an effective support network. In conclusion, the stressors associated with maternal depression in the different scenarios resulted in a variety of conditions diminishing the competence of children in school tasks. The identification and analysis of these conditions may contribute to the proposal of differentiated mental health strategies.

Feridas até o coração, erguem-se negras guerreiras. Resiliência em mulheres negras: transmissão psíquica e pertencimentos / Hurt to the heart, raise themselves black women warriors. Resilience in black women: psychological transmission and affiliationsPrestes, Clélia Rosane dos Santos 01 July 2013 (has links)
Posteriormente, são informadas as referências e anexados os termos de aceitação livre e esclarecida, o questionário de classificação social e o roteiro da entrevista / It was the objective of this research to analyze the processes of resilience in black women, taking into consideration the influences in content deriving from psychological transmission (black female relatives, descendants, ascendants, ancestors), from the symbolisms associated with black women, and from the meaning deriving from affiliation in black expressions (cultural, political, intellectual, religious). Tapestry of resilient lives : socio-cultural explorations of ten Vietnamese inner-city youthsPhan, Tan Thi 11 1900 (has links)
Traditional psychological research on resilience has focused on individual traits and
abilities and minimized the role of cultural and socio-political contexts in its analyses. In
this tapestry, I use a narrative framework to learn about ten Vietnamese refugee youths,
who have received university scholarships to attend university, but whose life chances
would otherwise be considered, at high risk of failure because of their race, ethnic, and
income status. I also interviewed their parents. Their narratives are discussed in the light
of historical, cultural and social contexts in which they live and learn. In reporting the
students' life stories, I use the concepts of "dance of life " that takes place within a context
of shared human stories.
The parents' endurance, struggles, and hopes accumulated over generations,
become a story of collective resiliency. This story provides the informative thread for a
collaborative weaving of the students' "dance of life" in which the children's individual
responsibility for their academic (achievements. For the refugees academic resilience is a
pervasive individual and collective experience, rooted in the distortions of social relations
and the disruptions of community life that are the product of an oppressive society.
Resiliency becomes the common "process" of participation open to all individuals, and
conjoins deep personal meaning and shared common purpose. Thus, academic
achievement is seen by the refugees as an effective instrument of empowerment and
liberation for the entire family, community, and the hope for the future
The self as narrated by these students orchestrates a dance between and among
themselves within a family, a community, and across generations. The students'
achievement is motivated by a debt of love and gratitude to those members of the family
achievement is motivated by a debt of love and gratitude to those members of the family
and the community to which they belong. Students stated that through their own efforts
and the "right attitudes" they could reach their goals in school and break down the barriers
of discrimination. They reported growing closer and more emotionally dependent on their
parents over time. They struggled more with how to have and maintain satisfying peer
relationships without becoming independent from their parents.
This study opens a door to the discussion of socio-cultural perspectives that may
partially explain previously reported outcomes of high achievement among Vietnamese
refugee youths, despite their humble origins and their parents' low level of in come and
education.

The sense of coherence and resilience of HIV-positive students in the support group of a university in the Eastern CapeHoho, Veliswa Nomfundu 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Most research in South Africa with regard to HIV/AIDS focuses on the HIV counseling
and testing of university students while little attention has been paid to how HIV-positive
students cope in the support groups within the institutions of higher learning. The study
aimed at determining and describing the sense of coherence and the resilience of HIVpositive
students in a university in the Eastern Cape Province and exploring the differences
between the demographics, using the subscale of the sense of coherence (SOC-29) and the
resilience assessment questionnaire (RAQ). The students who were registered with the
university were chosen as participants by means of non-probability purposive sampling
technique. The sample consisted of 40 students (Males = 10; Females = 30).
A t-test analysis revealed statistically significant differences between demographics
(language) and comprehensibility subscale of the sense of coherence (SOC). Furthermore,
statistically significant differences between languages, interaction and problem-solving
scales of RAQ were noted. The Cronbach‟s Alpha for SOC and RAQ yielded 0.74 and
0.94 respectively in this study. The results show that the participants were coping fairly
well with a chronic disease like HIV/AIDS and that their resilience was also average. The
main recommendation is that the university should increase HIV/AIDS coping be done on a larger scale in an institution that has different race groups.
SOC-29 en Rao vraelyste is by hulle geadministreer ten einde onderskeidelik “sense of

This study opens a door to the discussion of socio-cultural perspectives that may
partially explain previously reported outcomes of high achievement among Vietnamese
refugee youths, despite their humble origins and their parents' low level of in come and
education. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate
