However, the treatment can also drastically alter the physical and chemical characteristics of wood surfaces, which affect the adhesion quality and coating application. In this context, the objectives of this study were: (1) to evaluate the effect of heat treatmens on physical properties (density, equilibrium moisture content and mass loss) of Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D. Hill & L.A.S. Johnson and Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. woods; (2) to determine the effect of heat treatment on color change of both woods; (3) to evaluate the effect of heat treatments on adhesion quality of glued joints by shear strength testing; and (4) to evaluate the effect of physical and chemical modifications following heat treatment on adhesion characteristics. Heat treatments were performed in a laboratorial electric oven at 180 and 200?C. Color measurements were carried out on the CIE-L*a*b* space by using the CM-2600d portable spectrophotometer. Shear strength tests of the glued joints and solid woods were performed according to ASTM D 905 and ASTM D 143 standards, respectively. Three adhesive types were used: resorcinol, resorcinol-tannin 80:20 and resorcinol-tannin 60:40. Density and equilibrium moisture content of both wood species were reduzed by heat treatment. Both woods had mass loss, which increased with the increase of temperature and was more pronounced for Eucalyptus pellita. The original color of the woods changed following heat treatment, mainly to Eucalyptus pellita. The shear strength of solid wood and glued joints of both species was severely affected by heat treatments. The resorcinol-tannin 80:20 adhesive showed the best performance for untreated woods, however, after heat treatment, the adhesive type did not affect the shear strength. Glued joints of heat-treated woods had high percentage of wood failure due to higher porosity and adhesive penetration. The acidity of heat-treated woods affected the shear strength and presented a strong correlation with equilibrium moisture content due to degradation of hemicelluloses. A termorretifica??o foi realizada em um forno mufla el?trico laboratorial a 180 e 200?C. As medi??es de cor foram realizadas no espa?o CIE-L*a*b* com o aux?lio do espectrofot?metro port?til CM-2600d. Os ensaios de cisalhamento das juntas de madeira colada e das madeiras s?lidas foram realizados segundo as normas ASTM D 905 e ASTM D 143, respectivamente. Foram utilizados tr?s tipos de adesivos: resorcinol, resorcinol-tanino 80:20 e resorcinol-tanino 60:40. A densidade aparente e o teor de umidade de equil?brio das madeiras de ambas as esp?cies foram reduzidos pela termorretifica??o. Ambas as madeiras apresentaram perda de massa, sendo esta crescente com o aumento da temperatura e mais acentuada para a madeira de Eucalyptus pellita. A cor original das madeiras foi alterada pelo tratamento, principalmente para o Eucalyptus pellita. A resist?ncia ao cisalhamento da madeira s?lida e das juntas coladas de ambas as esp?cies foi severamente afetada pelos tratamentos termorretificadores. O adesivo resorcinol-tanino 80:20 apresentou o melhor desempenho para as madeiras n?o termorretificadas de ambas as esp?cies; entretanto, ap?s a termorretifica??o, o tipo de adesivo n?o afetou a resist?ncia ao cisalhamento. As juntas coladas das amostras de madeiras termorretificadas apresentaram uma alta porcentagem de falhas na madeira devido ? maior porosidade e maior penetra??o do adesivo. A acidez das amostras da madeira termorretificada afetou a resist?ncia ao cisalhamento e apresentou uma forte correla??o com o teor de umidade de equil?brio devido ? degrada??o das hemiceluloses. Para a an?lise da susceptibilidade a ocorr?ncia de movimentos de massas foi utilizada a metodologia de processo de an?lise hier?rquica ou AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) em combina??o com o uso dos sistemas de informa??o geogr?fica SIG. A determina??o dos par?metros de resist?ncia dos solos, foi realizado atrav?s de ensaios de compress?o triaxial tipo CU em condi??es saturadas, e ensaios de compress?o triaxial tipo CW para a condi??o de umidade residual. Para a determina??o das curvas de reten??o dos solos foi usado o m?todo do papel filtro, e as equa??es de Chandler et al. (1992) e posteriormente foi realizado o ajuste das curvas de reten??o pelo m?todo de Van Genuchten (1980). A partir dos resultados de ensaios triaxiais, foi ent?o, realizada a previs?o da resist?ncia ao cisalhamento dos solos n?o saturados a partir do modelo hiperb?lico proposto por Vilar (2007). A partir das se??es suscept?veis ? ocorr?ncia dos movimentos de massa e dos par?metros de resist?ncia dos solos estudados, foram realizadas an?lises da estabilidade das encostas a fim de quantificar o fator de seguran?a das mesmas. O m?todo utilizado nas an?lises de estabilidade foi o SRM, implementado no Software OPTUM, considerando diferentes condi??es de satura??o, a saber: solos sob condi??o natural de campo, solo com 50% do grau de satura??o e, por fim, considerando o solo completamente saturado. Nas an?lises foram consideradas tamb?m a presen?a de camadas de solo cimentado e fendas de tra??o presentes no topo da fal?sia. Ao todo a encosta foi subdividida em tr?s solos predominantes, os quais est?o posicionados na base, na se??o intermedi?ria e no topo da fal?sia, denominados solo-1, solo-2 e solo-3, respectivamente. Estes solos foram caracterizados como areia argilosa (SC), areia Silto-Argilosa (SM), areia mal graduada (SP). Quanto as curvas de reten??o, os tr?s solos apresentam comportamento bimodal, t?picas de solos com granulometrias de material com macroporos e microporos. Finalmente os resultados obtidos destas an?lises num?ricas, foram relacionados inicialmente com o modelo de susceptibilidade produzido a partir da metodologia AHP-SIG, concluindo que este modelo encontra-se em boa concord?ncia, evidenciado pelos resultados das an?lises num?ricas e pelos vest?gios de movimentos vistos em campo. Os resultados das an?lises tamb?m foram relacionados com os tipos de movimentos de massa, concluindo que tanto os fatores geomorfol?gicos, quanto os graus de satura??o resultam em diferentes tipos de movimentos para se??es caracter?sticas pr?prias destas geomorfologias (fal?sias), verificando desta forma os movimentos sugeridos nos estudos de Santos Jr et al.(2004) e Souza J?nior (2013), onde foram relacionados tr?s tipos de perfis com diferentes morfologias e seus poss?veis movimentos de massa, tombamentos, quedas de blocos e escorregamentos. / The aim of this research is to evaluate the susceptibility conditions to the occurrence of mass movements and slope stability of the Center of Launches from Barreira do Inferno (CLBI) using the method of Strength Reduction Method ou SRM, on unsaturated conditions in the Northeast of Brazil. The analysis of the susceptibility to the occurrence of mass movements, the methodology called the Analytic Hierarchy Process was used along with the GIS geographic information systems. In order to determine the resistance parameters of the soils, triaxial compression tests were carried out under saturated conditions CU and triaxial compression tests CW were performed for the residual moisture condition. The determination of soil retention curves, the filter paper method was considered, equations by Chandler et al. (1992), and the adjustment of the retention curves developed by Van Genuchten (1980). From the results of the triaxial tests, the prediction of the shear strength of the unsaturated soils was performed using the hyperbolic model proposed by Vilar (2007). Then, from the susceptible sections to the occurrence of mass movements and the resistance parameters of the studied soils, analyzes of slope stability were applied with the intention of quantify the safety factor of the same. The method used in the stability analyzes was the SRM, implemented in the OPTUM Software, considering different saturation conditions, as follows: soil under natural field saturation condition, soil with 50% degree of saturation, and finally Completely saturated soil. The analysis also took into account the presence of layers of cemented soil and traction cracks present in the upper part of the cliff. The slope was divided into three sections with predominant soils, which were positioned at the base of the intermediate section, and at the top of the cliff, called soil-1, soil-2, and soil-3 respectively. These soils were characterized as clayey sand (SC), silty sand (SM) and poorly graded sand (SP). As for the retention curves, the three soils present bimodal behavior, typical of soils with granulometry of material with micropores and macropores. Finally, the results obtained from these numerical analyzes were initially related to the model of susceptibility produced from the AHP-GIS methodology, concluding that this model is in good agreement, evidenced by the results of the numerical analysis and by the vestiges of Movements observed in the field. The results of the numerical analyzes were also related to the types of mass movements, presenting as an outcome that both geomorphological factors and degrees of saturation result in different types of movements for the characteristic sections of these geomorphologies (cliffs). Verifying in this way the movements suggested in the studies of Santos Jr et al. (2004) and Souza Junior (2013), where three types of profiles with different morphologies and their possible mass movements, toppling, fall of blocks and landslides were related.

Metodologia: 230 coroas de incisivos bovinos foram distribu?das aleatoriamente em 23 grupos (n=10). Ap?s ser realizado o tratamento de superf?cie com ?cido fosf?rico (15 segundos) e Primer Transbond XT (3M Unitek), br?quetes met?licos foram colados ao esmalte com resina Transbond XT (3M Unitek) utilizando 23 protocolos de fotoativa??o de acordo com os fatores ?aparelho fotoativador? (FlashMax P4 ? RMO, Valo Cordless ? Ultradent ou Radii-Cal ? SDI), ?faces fotoativadas? (centro/vestibular; mesial, distal, cervical e incisal; mesial e distal ou cervical e incisal) e ?tempo de fotoativa??o? (2, 3, 4, 6, 20 ou 40 segundos). O ensaio de cisalhamento (100KgF, 1mm/min) foi realizado ap?s o armazenamento das amostras por 4 meses (?gua destilada, 37?C). Utilizando os mesmos protocolos de fotoativa??o, 230 discos de resina (0,1 mm de espessura e 5 mm de di?metro, em m?dia) foram confeccionados para an?lise do GC. Os dados da RUC (MPa) e do GC (%) foram avaliados descritivamente e atrav?s do teste T de Student, da ANOVA one way e do teste de Tukey. As falhas de uni?o foram classificadas de acordo com o ?ndice Remanescente Adesivo (IRA), analisadas descritivamente e atrav?s do teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: De todos os 23 protocolos, apenas 5 apresentaram valores de RUC clinicamente aceitos de acordo com a literatura. No que diz respeito aos fatores ?faces fotoativadas? e ?tempo de fotoativa??o?, os protocolos do Valo Cordless foram os ?nicos que apresentaram resultados quanto ? RUC estatisticamente semelhantes (p=0,230 e p=0,093, respectivamente). Das compara??es que apresentaram diferen?a estatisticamente significativa (p?0,05) quanto ao fator ?tempo de fotoativa??o? de acordo com a RUC, 66,6% correspondem aos protocolos onde apenas a face central do br?quete foi fotoativada. Ao comparar os grupos onde apenas duas faces foram fotoativadas, aqueles em que o par de faces correspondeu ? mesial e ? distal foram os que resultaram maiores valores de RUC. Quanto ao GC, tendo em vista o fator ?faces fotoativadas?, apenas os resultados dos grupos do FlashMax P4 foram estatisticamente diferentes (p?0,05). O Valo Cordless foi o ?nico aparelho no qual o fator ?tempo de fotoativa??o? n?o afetou de forma estatisticamente significa os valores do GC (p=0,968). E a maioria (66,6%) dos valores mais elevados do GC quando apenas duas faces foram fotoativadas correspondeu ?queles protocolos nos quais tais faces foram a mesial e a distal. Em rela??o ao IRA, houve diferen?a estatisticamente significativa entre os escores (p=0,000), sendo que o escore 2 foi o mais observado (52,6%). Conclus?o: A RUC dos br?quetes met?licos colados ao esmalte e o GC da Transbond XT podem apresentar diferen?as estatisticamente significativas a depender do aparelho fotoativador selecionado e do protocolo de colagem utilizado pelo ortodontista. E sup?e-se que a for?a adesiva entre a resina e o esmalte dent?rio ? maior do que aquela entre o br?quete e a Transbond XT. / Objective: To analyze the effect of different photoactivation protocols on shear bond strength (SBS) of metallic brackets bonded to enamel and the degree of conversion (DC) of an orthodontic resin using three photoactivating devices. Methodology: 230 crowns of bovine incisors were randomly distributed in 23 groups (n = 10). After the surface treatment with phosphoric acid (15 seconds) and Primer Transbond XT (3M Unitek), metal brackets were bonded to the enamel with Transbond XT resin (3M Unitek) using 23 photoactivation protocols according to the factors "photoactivator" (FlashMax P4 ? RMO, Valo Cordless ? Ultradent or Radii-Cal ? SDI), "photoactivated faces" (center/vestibular; mesial, distal, cervical and incisal; mesial and distal or cervical and incisal) and "photoactivation time" (2, 3, 4, 6, 20 or 40 seconds). The shear test (100KgF, 1mm/min) was performed after storage of the samples for 4 months (distilled water, 37?C). Using the same photoactivation protocols, 230 resin discs (0,1 mm thick and 5 mm diameter, on average) were made for DC analysis. The SBS (MPa) and DC (%) data were evaluated descriptively and through Student's T-test, one-way ANOVA and the Tukey test. The union failures were classified according to the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI), analyzed descriptively and through the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: Of all 23 protocols, only 5 presented clinically accepted SBS values according to the literature. Regarding the factors "photoactivated faces" and "photoactivation time", the Valo Cordless protocols were the only ones that presented statistically similar SBS results (p=0,230 and p=0,093, respectively). Of the comparisons that presented a statistically significant difference (p?0,05) regarding the factor "time of photoactivation" according to SBS, 66,6% corresponded to the protocols where only the central face of the bracket was photoactivated. When comparing the groups where only two faces were photoactivated, those in which the pair of faces corresponded to the mesial and the distal were the ones that resulted in higher SBS values. Regarding the CG, considering the "photoactivated faces" factor, only the results of the FlashMax P4 groups were statistically different (p?0,05). The Valo Cordless was the only device in which the factor "time of photoactivation" didn?t affect statistically means the values of the DC (p=0,968). And the majority (66,6%) of the highest DC values when only two faces were photoactivated corresponded to those protocols in which such faces were mesial and distal. Regarding ARI, there was a statistically significant difference between the scores (p=0,000), and the score 2 was the most observed (52,6%). Conclusion: The SBS of the metal brackets bonded to the enamel and the DC of the Transbond XT resin may present statistically significant differences depending on the selected photoactivating device and the bonding protocol used by the orthodontist. And it?s assumed that the adhesive force between the resin and the dental enamel is greater than that between the bracket and the Transbond XT.

Problemas de instabilidade envolvendo estas estruturas trazem consequ?ncias catastr?ficas ? sociedade. A barragem do A?u, ? uma obra geot?cnica de significativa notoriedade e import?ncia no Nordeste, principalmente no estado do Rio Grande do Norte. ? a maior barragem do estado e ganhou destaque na literatura nacional e internacional com o rompimento do talude de montante no final do per?odo construtivo. Em casos de ruptura, a retroan?lise ? uma t?cnica confi?vel para determina??o dos par?metros de resist?ncia ao cisalhamento dos solos de forma a contribuir para que se evite casos semelhantes. A partir da avalia??o de dados de resist?ncia dispon?veis no meio acad?mico, este trabalho teve como objetivo retroanalisar a ruptura ocorrida para obter os par?metros m?dios de resist?ncia ao cisalhamento do material argiloso preto que constitu?a o n?cleo da barragem do A?u antes do acidente ocorrido. Na primeira etapa do trabalho foram realizadas an?lises de estabilidade do talude de montante da barragem e na segunda etapa a retroan?lise determin?stica e probabil?stica. Essas an?lises foram realizadas no software Slide 7.0 pertencente ? plataforma RocScience. Os resultados mostraram que o talude romperia com os par?metros de resist?ncia da argila siltosa preta na condi??o saturada, com valores de probabilidade de ruptura variando de 60 a 97% entre os m?todos de equil?brio limite utilizados nas an?lises. Tamb?m foi poss?vel definir os poss?veis par?metros m?dios de resist?ncia ao cisalhamento da argila siltosa preta e estabelecer as causas de ruptura da barragem. Os valores da coes?o e do ?ngulo de atrito, no instante de ruptura, obtidos na retroan?lise determin?stica para a argila siltosa preta foram cu=47,1 kPa e ?u=0?. Na retroan?lise probabil?stica os valores da coes?o e do ?ngulo de atrito obtidos foram cu=33,8 kPa e ?u=3,1?, com uma probabilidade de ruptura de 52,7%. Com isso, conclui-se que a ruptura do talude de montante da barragem do A?u ocorreu por causa de erros na fase de projeto e de constru??o da barragem acompanhado pela perda de resist?ncia do solo devido aos excessos de poropress?es gerados durante a constru??o. / Risks associated to dam failure are very high. Problems of instability involving these structures bring catastrophic consequences to the social comunity. The A?u dam is a geotechnical work with significant importance in the Northeast, mainly in Rio Grande do Norte state. It is the largest dam of the state and has gained prominence in national and international literature with the slice of the upstream slope at the end of its construction period. In cases of failure, back analysis is a reliable technique used to calculate the shear strength parameters of the soil in order to avoid similar cases to happen. Considering the evaluation of strength data available in the academic environment, this work had as purpose to analyze the failure occurred in order to obtain the average shear strength parameters of the black clayey material that constituted the A?u dam core before the accident. In the first stage of this work the slope stability of the dam was analyzed and in the second stage the deterministic and probabilistic back analysis was performed. These analyzes were performed in Slide 7.0 from Rocscience platform. The results showed that the slope would fail with strength parameters of the black silty clay in the saturated condition, with values of probability of failure ranging from 60 to 97% between the equilibrium limit methods used in the analyzes. It was also possible to define the possible average shear strength values of black silty clay and to establish the causes of the dam failure. The cohesion and the friction angle values obtained at the instant of failure in the deterministic back analysis for black silty clay were cu=47.1 kPa and ?u=0?. For the probabilistic back analysis the cohesion and the friction angle values obtained were cu=33,8 kPa and ?u=3,1?, with a probability of failure of 52,7%. Therefore, it is concluded that the A?u dam upstream slope failure occurred because of errors in the design and construction phase of the dam accompanied by the loss of soil strength due to the excess of poropressures generated during the construction.

The use of waste tires in tropical soils requires prior knowledge of the properties and limitations of these materials. In this work, the results of an experimental program was devised to characterize the behavior of mixtures of waste tires and a lateritic soil. The residue used in this study is classified as tire buffings with an average size of 1.4 mm. The laboratory program included testing of particle size analysis, Atterberg limits, compaction, direct shear tests, permeability and confined compression tests with pure soil, pure tire and the mixtures. Proportions of 0% (pure soil), 10%, 20%, 40%, 50 % and 100% (pure tire) by weight were used. For the confining stress levels used in the study, the presence of tire residue provided a considerable increase in shear strength of the mixture. The maximum shear strength was obtained for a residue content of 40% by weight. Permeability tests on samples of waste under a confining stress of 100 kPa showed that the permeability increases significantly with increasing residue content until a residue content of 20%. The increase in permeability after that value showed to be negligible. Confined compression tests showed that the soil mixed with tire residue becomes more compressible than the pure soil. The secant constrained modulus (Msec) for the same vertical stress decreases with increasing percentage of residue. / Dentre as alternativas tecnol?gicas para a destina??o correta de pneus est? o uso na constru??o de aterros de misturas de solo e res?duo de pneus triturados. A utiliza??o de res?duo de pneus em solos tropicais requer o conhecimento pr?vio das propriedades e limita??es desses materiais. Nesta disserta??o, apresentam-se os resultados de um programa experimental para caracteriza??o de misturas de res?duo de pneus em um solo later?tico. O res?duo utilizado neste estudo ? classificado como desbastes de pneus, com tamanho m?dio de 1,4 mm. O programa laboratorial incluiu ensaios de an?lise granulom?trica, limites de consist?ncia, compacta??o, cisalhamento direto, permeabilidade e compress?o confinada com as misturas de solo res?duos de pneus. Foram utilizadas propor??es de 0% (solo puro), 10%, 20%, 40%, 50% e 100% (res?duo puro) em peso. Para os n?veis de tens?o confinantes utilizados no estudo, a presen?a do res?duo de pneu proporcionou um aumento consider?vel da resist?ncia ao cisalhamento da mistura. A m?xima resist?ncia ao cisalhamento foi obtida para um teor de res?duo de 40% em peso. Os ensaios de permeabilidade em amostras de res?duos sob uma tens?o confinante de 100 kPa revelaram que a permeabilidade cresce significativamente com o aumento do teor de res?duo at? um teor de 20%, estabilizando-se em seguida. Os ensaios de compress?o confinada evidenciaram que o solo misturado ao res?duo de pneus torna-se mais compress?vel que o solo puro.
