Social exclusion, resort decline and the English seaside

Jakes, Steven January 2016 (has links)
Traditionally seaside resorts have been one of the least understood of Britain’s ‘problem areas’. This thesis breaks new ground by reporting on an exploratory data analysis to probe the influence of resort decline on social exclusion in England’s seaside resorts. Drawing on a wide range of socio-economic datasets and quantitative methods of data analysis and GIS software, the study investigates the scale, nature and extent of multiple deprivation in English seaside resorts, differences in socio-economic structure between deprived and non-deprived resorts and the factors that may explain these differences, and the nature and incidence of localised problem complexes. A combination of univariate, bivariate and multivariate empirical analyses, undertaken at several geographic scales, illuminates the differential incidence of deprivation. The study findings reveal that the majority of seaside districts, small areas and resorts are experiencing similar types and high levels of multiple deprivation. Various facets of population composition (worklessness, education and skills, health, family stability, connectivity, and poverty) and place factors (employment base, economic prosperity, housing, and community safety) are significant for deprivation in seaside resorts. Four types of highly deprived resort areas emerged from the cluster analysis. Not only are the research findings of paramount importance in understanding both the pattern of socio-spatial disadvantage and the prospects for socio-economic regeneration, but they also contribute to an understanding of the outcomes of post-mature resort development, particularly in relation to the internal dynamics of resort change.

Bermúdez Chaparro, Andrés Alejandro 12 1900 (has links)

Bodega + Alojamiento Vitivinícola en Lunahuaná / Winery + Hotel in Lunahuana

Rodríguez Villar, André Javier 29 May 2020 (has links)
The thesis project, in question, consists of a wine and tourism complex located in the Cañete Valley, in Lunahuaná. The objective of the project is to respond to a lack of modern equipment that contemplates the latest trends in the architecture of wine cellars and hotels in rural areas such as the valley. This project responds to this lack due to the fact that in Peru there is recognition for our drinking flag of El Pisco, but this is not reflected in the existing infrastructure. That is why this research is carried out through motivations and intentions, current problems, emphasis on architectural concepts and theories, history of its architectural typology, analysis and comparison with referential projects, analysis and selection of the best terrain; and all the analysis and calculation of the users that will intervene, as well as the necessary environments that the project will contemplate. With all this research and information analysis, we proceeded to generate an architectural proposal located on the selected land, which could respond to such problems and motivations discussed above to achieve a complete architecture project. / Tesis

Abbey Hotel of Jumièges

Chen, Yuheng January 2021 (has links)
The project is about time and hierarchy, it’s a time vortex and a privileged paradise. The project is based on the ruin of abbey Jumièges, Normandy, France. The abbey has kept being destroyed and rebuilt during the past millennium and the architectural style is always changing through the time. Hierarchy was created within this privileged paradise. The hotel has swallowed the entire ruin and all the history, strategies, like mixing & misusing of programs and collisions with history are applied to it. I’m always interested in the introversion of architecture, a desire of being narcissism and vulnerable and the meaning of hierarchy. This project can be read as a terminal of privilege, and model of aggressive arrogant but reasonable attitude towards the history. It makes me contemplating the relations between negativism and hedonism and society.

Elastic, Pure, and Invigorating: A Cottage Row for Yellow Sulphur Springs

Albright, Dustin Graham 22 July 2008 (has links)
Situated between Blacksburg and Christiansburg in Montgomery County, Virginia, the Yellow Sulphur Springs Resort began in 1810 as a collection of rustic cabins and closed in 1923 with two hotels, numerous cottages, a bowling alley, and a springhouse gazebo. In the interim, the resort hosted summer travelers seeking refreshment and leisure. Whether drinking the medicinal spring waters or catching up with last summerâ s acquaintances, guests found Yellow Sulphur to be a peaceful and rejuvenating stop on the springs circuit. Currently, the property is privately owned and its owners have expressed interest in renovating the remaining hotel and opening a restaurant on its first floor. Presupposing this renovation and a subsequent reopening of the Yellow Sulphur Springs Resort, I proposed a new series of seasonal cottage rows to house resort visitors and have designed one row in particular that overlooks a small spring on the site. Each cottage was divided into public, private, and most private spaces, both formally and systematically. Additionally, a distinction was made between the sulphurous spring water below and fresh rain water, which is collected above, to reflect summer light into the bathrooms following afternoon showers. / Master of Architecture

All the court's cases: a study of Burger court certiorari policy

Howarth, Victoria Stone January 1975 (has links)
While many scholars have ignored the cases that constitute the total litigational input to the U.S. Supreme Court, some have examined the possibility of a set policy or agenda for gatekeeping,or determination of which cases will be heard. This study is concerned with the methodological implications of gatekeeping analysis in relation to other studies and Court procedure generally, and the Burger Court from 1971 through 1973 specifically. The data consists of cases listed in the Appellate Docket Index to U.S. Law Week. The study seeks to clarify: 1) the relative strengths of origin and type of case as factors in the decision of the Court to hear a case, 2) the differences in summary and formal bearing policies, and 3) the amount of change or evolution in Court gatekeeping policy during the period. The findings indicate the presence of an active policy relative to the origin of cases in state or federal courts, while civil litigation was found to have greater access to the Court than criminal cases, linked apparently in part to the findings for civil liberties questions. Tax cases received no consistent treatment in the selection process. The conclusion indicates that the Burger Court, as of 1973, had developed no set agenda in relation to the factors studied, but does aot dismiss the possibility that if additional factors are studied over a longer period a pattern may emerge. / M.A.
