Global Governance in the Brazilian Amazon : Co-Management of Land Resources

The aim of this paper is to critically asses the different actors participating in the multilevel management of land resources in the Brazilian Amazon, through the theoretical framework of global governance studies and resource co-management. Four principles of adaptive resource co-management from existing theory were used: co-management as power sharing, comanagement as institution building, co-management as good governance, and co-management as trust building. During the analysis of the empirical material it became apparent that one side of the interaction between different actors in the Brazilian Amazon was not covered in previous literature, and that was the formation of horizontal and/or vertical partnerships between independent entities, or “co-management as network creation”. These partnerships, lasting or not, are established for the achievement of the common aim and lead to gains for all parties involved.

Epistemological Stretching and Transformative Sustainability Learning: An Intuitive Inquiry

I have chosen to conduct an intuitive inquiry into the relationship between a pedagogical focus on epistemological stretching and transformative sustainability learning. The study contributes to theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching and learning about and within the realm of transformative sustainability learning, and contributes to a deepened understanding of epistemological stretching as a pedagogical orientation. Specifically, I have investigated the implications of epistemological stretching as a focal point for teaching and learning for students in ENVS 811: Multiple Ways of Knowing in Environmental Decision Making, a graduate level course in the School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS) at the University of Saskatchewan. Using the 5 cycles of Intuitive Inquiry, this research records and interprets accounts of eight students who participated in ENVS 811. The course is oriented around critical examination of human-nature relations with an emphasis on epistemology. The goal for this research is to investigate the ways in which a focus on epistemological stretching can enable three things: (1) prepare students to engage in interdisciplinary and sustainability knowledge creation; (2) help alleviate the epistemic incongruence in resource co-management arrangements; and (3) bring multiple ways of knowing to bear on complex environmental issues. This research is focused on answering three questions: 1. In what ways can a focus on epistemology help enable perspective transformation implicit in a transformative learning experience? 2. In what ways can educating for epistemological stretching result in new ways of thinking, valuing, doing? 3. In what ways can epistemological stretching help students engage in more effective and ethically appropriate ways with Indigenous peoples and their knowledges? This research concludes that epistemological stretching can contribute to transformative sustainability pedagogy in meaningful ways and develops 5 lenses for describing the conceptual spaces in which learning occurs: acknowledgement and deconstruction of power, relationship reconceptualization, change in perspective and action, worldview bridging, and validation of previously held views.

Radio network management in cognitive LTE-femtocell Systems

There is a strong uptake of femtocell deployment as small cell application platforms in the upcoming LTE networks. In such two-tier networks of LTE-femtocell base stations, a large portion of the assigned spectrum is used sporadically leading to underutilisation of valuable frequency resources. Novel spectrum access techniques are necessary to solve these current spectrum inefficiency problems. Therefore, spectrum management solutions should have the features to improve spectrum access in both temporal and spatial manner. Cognitive Radio (CR) with the Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) is considered to be the key technology in this research in order to increase the spectrum efficiency. This is an effective solution to allow a group of Secondary Users (SUs) to share the radio spectrum initially allocated to the Primary User (PUs) at no interference. The core aim of this thesis is to develop new cognitive LTE-femtocell systems that offer a 4G vision, to facilitate the radio network management in order to increase the network capacity and further improve spectrum access probabilities. In this thesis, a new spectrum management model for cognitive radio networks is considered to enable a seamless integration of multi-access technology with existing networks. This involves the design of efficient resource allocation algorithms that are able to respond to the rapid changes in the dynamic wireless environment and primary users activities. Throughout this thesis a variety of network upgraded functions are developed using application simulation scenarios. Therefore, the proposed algorithms, mechanisms, methods, and system models are not restricted in the considered networks, but rather have a wider applicability to be used in other technologies. This thesis mainly investigates three aspects of research issues relating to the efficient management of cognitive networks: First, novel spectrum resource management modules are proposed to maximise the spectrum access by rapidly detecting the available transmission opportunities. Secondly, a developed pilot power controlling algorithm is introduced to minimise the power consumption by considering mobile position and application requirements. Also, there is investigation on the impact of deploying different numbers of femtocell base stations in LTE domain to identify the optimum cell size for future networks. Finally, a novel call admission control mechanism for mobility management is proposed to support seamless handover between LTE and femtocell domains. This is performed by assigning high speed mobile users to the LTE system to avoid unnecessary handovers. The proposed solutions were examined by simulation and numerical analysis to show the strength of cognitive femtocell deployment for the required applications. The results show that the new system design based on cognitive radio configuration enable an efficient resource management in terms of spectrum allocation, adaptive pilot power control, and mobile handover. The proposed framework and algorithms offer a novel spectrum management for self organised LTE-femtocell architecture. Eventually, this research shows that certain architectures fulfilling spectrum management requirements are implementable in practice and display good performance in dynamic wireless environments which recommends the consideration of CR systems in LTE and femtocell networks.

The dissertation thesis aims at exploring the possibilities of diversity management in relation to managing people with diverse personality characteristics, at suggesting principles of such managing and at creating corresponding model so that employers could use the available human capital more efficiently and improved quality of working life of their employees as well. Based on number of primary sources, the thesis presents a detailed view of the topic, justifies its purpose and use in practice and brings the topic into broad context of human resource management. The principles of managing personality diversity are suggested, subsequently confronted with the practice in the Czech Republic and transformed into a model: Using an extensive questionnaire survey and both quantitative and qualitative analysis of gathered data, the conclusions confirm importance of the topic for human resource management in the Czech Republic, and point out the current unsatisfactory state that organizations themselves are often trying to improve. Thus, this thesis contributes significantly to better understanding of principles and established practice of managing people with different personality characteristics and offers possibilities how to introduce the topic into practice successfully.

Study on Architecture-Oriented Memory Assembly and Testing OEM Factory Manufacturing Resource Planning Management Model

Memory assembly and testing OEM as the IC semiconductor backend process by Taiwan conducts 30% manufacturing output globally. Mainly 50% of the output focused on DRAM. The quality and shipping were headed as the key factor all over the world. The manufacturing process improved in South Korea and mainland China accompanied with the raw material price rising after the 311 earthquake in Japan, enterprises encountering enormous challenge so their OEM manufacturing needs to incorporate the copper wiring process and lower the cost to enhance the competitiveness. The rush orders exhausted the DRAM on-hand parts after economic recovery during the first half of 2011. The shortage mainly came from raw materials, human resources and equipments. Precise planning with elastic resource and information system control became the top priority. Therefore as Elpida, the DRAM manufacturer in Japan, filed the bankruptcy protection, memory assembly and testing OEM manufacturers should be paced in tuning the policy of enterprise, organization, production elements and information system to face the rapid global economic environments change. We propose architecture-oriented memory assembly and testing OEM factory manufacturing resource planning management model (AOMATOEMFMRPMM) in this study. AOMATOEMFMRPMM is an enterprise architecture which uses structure-behavior coalescence to define the components, operations and task forces during the planning of the manufacturing resources. AOMATOEMFMRPMM lets corporation supervisors understand and manipulate effectively the manufacturing resources, lessen the risk of re-organization, improve the quality of maintenance and efficiency of communication of the information system.

Strategic management training and development : an exploration into the extent and nature of senior and middle managers' development in the Palestinian telecommunication sector

This research explores the nature and extent of management development and training of senior and middle managers working in Palestinian telecommunication organizations using a basic trichotomous (three-stage) model: needs assessment, training development, and evaluation. A critical review of the literature is presented to identify the different approaches and key principles that make up the field of training and development. Using the survey approach, primary data were collected to answer the research question. A total of 142 questionnaires were distributed among senior and middle managers with 110 questionnaires being completed and returned (77 per cent response rate). Field work was also supported with 10 selected interviews with high ranking officials in the surveyed organizations to help corroborate the results. Thereafter, data was analysed using SPSS and spread sheets, and then compared with data available from literature. Despite the presence of a rather systematic approach to training, the findings show that the current status of training in the surveyed organizations is inadequate with heavy emphasis on traditional methods throughout the three stages; the current system does not offer a holistic perspective to training and development. This study presents an exploratory investigation into the training status in telecommunication organizations. It provides a fundamental foundation for future research aimed at expanding the available knowledge within the context of the study. In addition, specific strengths and weaknesses in the current system are identified using the trichotomous model in a more practical manner. Overall, this thesis offers both professionals and academics a fresh perspective on training in Palestinian telecommunication organizations; it not only highlights the importance of training but also stresses that future initiatives and programs are more carefully designed and implemented.
