Niche partitioning among fur seals

At Cape Gantheaume, Kangaroo Island (South Australia), adult male, lactating female and juvenile New Zealand (NZ) and Australian fur seals regularly return to the same colony, creating the potential for intra- and inter-specific foraging competition in nearby waters. I hypothesised that these demographic groups would exhibit distinct foraging strategies, which reduce competition and facilitate their coexistence. I analysed the diet of adult male, adult female and juvenile NZ fur seals and adult male Australian fur seals and studied the diving behaviour of adult male and lactating female NZ fur seals and the at-sea movements of juvenile, adult male and lactating female NZ fur seals. Female diet reflected that of a generalist predator, influenced by prey availability and their dependant pups� fasting abilities. In contrast, adult male NZ and Australian fur seals used larger and more energy-rich prey, most likely because they could more efficiently access and handle such prey. Juvenile fur seals primarily utilised small lantern fish, which occur south of the shelf break, in pelagic waters. Juveniles undertook the longest foraging trips and adult males conducted more lengthy trips than lactating females, which perform relatively brief trips in order to regularly nurse their pups. Unlike lactating females, some adult males appeared to rest underwater by performing dives that were characterised by a period of passive drifting through the water column. The large body sizes of adult males and lactating females facilitated the use of both benthic and pelagic habitats, but adult males dived deeper and for longer than lactating females, facilitating vertical separation of their foraging habitats. Spatial overlap in foraging habitats among the age/sex groups was minimal, because lactating females typically utilised continental shelf waters and males used deeper water over the shelf break, beyond female foraging grounds. Furthermore, juveniles used pelagic waters, up to 1000 km south of the regions used by lactating females and adult males. The age and sex groups in this study employed dramatically different strategies to maximise their survival and reproductive success. Their prey and foraging habitats are likely to be shaped by body size differences, which determine their different physiological constraints and metabolic requirements. I suggest that these physiological constraints and the lactation constraints on females are the primary factors that reduce competition, thereby facilitating niche partitioning.

Diapause by seed predators and parasitoids in Chionochloa mast seeding communities

Chionochloa, a genus of snow tussock grasses native to New Zealand, exhibits pronounced mast seeding. Chionochloa suffers very high levels of pre-dispersal flower and seed predation by three main insects: Eucalyptodiplosis chionochloae, a cecidomyiid midge, which is formally described here; Megacraspedus calamogonus, a gelechiid moth and Diplotoxa similis, a chloropid fly. Seven species of parasitoids that attack these seed predators were discovered. Four species parasitize M. calamogonus (one tachinid fly and three hymenopteran wasps), one parasitizes D. similis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and two parasitize E. chionochloae, (a pteromalid wasp Gastrancistrus sp. and a platygastrid wasp Zelostemma chionochloae, which is given a formal description here). The abundance, predation levels by each of the insect species, and interactions between all the organisms in the community were studied across three elevations at Mount Hutt over three summer seasons. M. calamogonus was most abundant at 450 m altitude during all three seasons. D. similis was most common at 1070 m altitude, while its predation levels peaked in low flowering seasons and decreased in high seasons. E. chionochloae was abundant in all three altitudes and increased its predation levels with increasing flowering intensity. E. chionochloae was confirmed to use prolonged diapause of at least three years. Prolonged diapause was also confirmed in its two parasitoids. Chionochloa plants were manipulated with various treatments to test the effect on diapause in E. chionochloae and its two parasitoids. Treatments included plant warming, root pruning, gibberellic acid sprayed on the plants and combinations of these treatments. All three insects changed their emergence in response to some treatments and therefore it was suggested that combined with risk-spreading diapause, they may use some predicting to emerge from prolonged diapause. E. chionochloae control their diapause following some of the cues that Chionochloa use for flowering, while Z. chionochloae and Gastrancistrus in some cases follow their host’s cues and in others use similar cues as Chionochloa plants. Emergence or diapause predictions differed across elevations and plant species in all three insect seed/flower predators. E. chionochloae had female-biased sex ratios in different populations even after prolonged diapause. There was week evidence that both parasitoid species are female-biased in the first emergence year and male-biased after more than one year in diapause. Therefore it was suggested that diapause is not more costly for females of E. chionochloae and its parasitoid than for males. Females of all three species were not found to be better predictors (i.e, more likely to respond to treatments by not entering extended diapause) than males. The complex interactions of all the organisms in this web are thought to be sensitive to climate, and it was suggested that the global climate change may alter this sensitive system.

Habitat partitioning, and an assessment of habitat suitability using presence data, of a large herbivore communitiy on a Zimbabwean private wildlife reserve

Thesis (MFor)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The factors determining habitat selection of large herbivores, on a private wildlife reserve in semi-arid southeastern Zimbabwe, were investigated. Gross vegetative structure, herbaceous composition and topographic features thought to determine herbivore distribution were measured. Seasonal variation in resource distribution was considered, and research therefore extended over an entire year. Herbivore distribution and ecological niche separation was explained through several important environmental variables, and potential for inter-specific competition inferred. Additionally, predictive habitat suitability models were designed for each of the grazing species in the critical dry season. Herbivores showed a large degree of niche overlap in both the hotwet season and the cool-dry season, when food resources were more plentiful. Niche separation between grazers was pronounced in the hot-dry season. Herbivore distribution was associated most closely with distance to water, grass sward height, time since burn, woody plant density and by the presence of predominant grasses, these being Urochloa mossambicensis, Panicum maximum, Heteropogon contortus and Digitaria eriantha. Ecological separation of herbivores by the grasses P. maximum, H. contortus and D. eriantha was more indicative of associated environmental variables than feeding niche separation. A GIS-based analysis, using species presence data and quantitative coverages of environmental variables, produced maps of gradations of habitat suitability for grazing species during the dry season. Results of both analyses were integrated and gave a better understanding of ecological separation, and possible competitive interactions, among the large herbivore community on Malilangwe Estate. Recommendations were made based on the interpretation of findings, within the context of available management options. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die bepalende faktore van habitat seleksie by groot herbivore op ‘n privaat wildreservaat in semi-dorre suidoos Zimbabwe is ondersoek. Globale plantegroei stuktuur, kruidagtige samestelling en topografiese eienskappe wat glo herbivoor verspreiding bepaal, is gemeet. Seisoenale variasie in hulpbronverspreiding is in ag geneem en dus het navorsing oor ‘n hele jaar gestrek. Herbivoor verspreiding en ekologiese nisskeiding is verduidelik deur verskeie belangrike omgewingsveranderlikes en die potensiaal vir interspesifieke kompetisie is afgelei. Boonop is voorspellende habitat-geskiktheidsmodelle ontwerp vir elk van die weidingspesies in die krities droë seisoen. Herbivore toon ‘n hoë graad van nis oorvleueling in sowel die warm, nat seisoen as die koel, droë seisoen wanneer voedingsbronne meer volop is. Nis verdeling tussen weidiere was duidelik herkenbaar in die warm, droë seisoen. Die ekologiese skeiding van herbivore deur die grasse P. maximum, H. contortus en D. eriantha het meer gedui op geassosieerde omgewingsveranderlikes as op skeiding van voedingsnisse. ‘n GIS-gebaseerde analise wat spesie-teenwoordigheidsdata en kwantitatiewe dekking van omgewingsveranderlikes gebruik, het klassifikasiekaarte geproduseer van habitatgeskiktheid vir weidiere tydens die droë seisoen. Resultate van beide analises is geïntegreer en het ‘n beter begrip van ekologiese skeiding en moontlike kompeterende interaksies tussen die groot herbivore gemeenskap op Malilangwe Estate tot gevolg gehad. Aanbevelings is gemaak, gebaseer op die interpretasie van bevindinge, binne die konteks van beskikbare bestuursopsies.

O conjunto de informações disponível atualmente sugere que a presença de predadores influencia a abundância e o uso de hábitat por girinos e, conseqüentemente, a estrutura da comunidade. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o uso de recursos e investigar a influência de predadores na distribuição espacial de espécies e na estrutura de comunidades de girinos. As principais questões deste estudo foram: 1) qual o papel dos fatores abióticos na estruturação de comunidades de girinos?; 2) qual o grau de sobreposição de nicho entre as espécies nos três principais eixos de recursos: tempo (ocorrência sazonal), alimento e espaço (hábitat)?; 3) os girinos apresentam um padrão de distribuição não-aleatório em relação aos predadores? As amostragens tiveram freqüência mensal com coletas simultâneas de girinos e insetos predadores. Na caracterização dos corpos d'água foram utilizados dez descritores ambientais. Para determinar as guildas de espécies com relação ao uso de hábitat e ocorrência mensal foi implementada, respectivamente, uma análise de agrupamento e de ordenação por escalonamentro multidimensional não métrico. Para investigar a associação entre a abundância de girinos e os gradientes ambientais foi usada uma análise de correspondência canônica. A partilha de recursos entre girinos foi analisada utilizando-se uma análise de sobreposição de nicho em conjunto com um modelo nulo, considerando como eixos de recursos a ocorrência mensal, ocorrência nas poças e os itens alimentares. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Tadpoles are an important component of freshwater ecossystems and in the last thirty years has been used as model organisms to test hypothesis in community ecology. The data currently available suggest that the presence of predators influences the abundance and habitat use by tadpoles and, consequently the community structure. The aims of this study were to establish how tadpoles divide resources and to investigate the influence of predators on species distribution and on community structure of tadpoles. The main questions were: 1) What is the role of abiotic factors in the community structure?; 2) What is the extent of niche overlap among species, considering the three main resource axes: time (seasonal occurrence), diet items and space (macrohabitat)?; 3) Tadpoles exhibit a non-random distribution pattern in relation to predaceous insects? We conducted monthly samplings to collect tadpoles and predaceous insects. We also used 10 environmental descriptors to characterize the water bodies. To recognize species guilds in relation to habitat use and monthly occurrence, we employed respectively a cluster analysis and a n-MDS, respectively. To investigate the association between species abundance and environmental gradients we used a canonical correspondence analysis. The resource partitioning among tadpoles was analyzed using a null model, considering as recource axes monthly occurrence, pond occupancy and diet items. The pair-wise co-occurrence analysis between tadpoles and predaceous insects was carried out using a null model. Our main findings demonstrate that forest canopy cover and pond hydroperiod were the main factors influencing species abundance along water bodies sampled. Competição por mutualismos: hierarquia de dominância interespecífica mediada pela qualidade do recurso regulando interações formiga-planta

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / Ants that collect nectar from plants bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFN) can defend them against the attacks of herbivores. Many cases of this food-for-protection mutualism have been described and the next step is to understand the mechanisms that structure these interactions. In this study, this issue was addressed through field observations and experiments on ant behaviour in studies compiled into five chapters. Specifically, we evaluated the plant\'s investment in attracting ants (nectar quality) and the competitive relationship between ants (resource dominance hierarchies) as structuring mechanisms of ant-plant interactions. The entire study took place in areas of the ecosystem known as Rupestrian Fields, located in Ouro Preto (Brazil), between June 2011 and March 2014. In Chapter 1, we observe that ant-plant interaction network in Rupestrian Fields is nested and generalized as expected for mutualisms, but differs from ant-hemipteran network, its ecological equivalent, despite both share ant species interactions. In Chapter 2, we delve into the study of the effect of resources in interaction frequency, and we showed that the quality more than quantity of nectar determines the pattern of interaction between plants (10 species) and ants (32 species), as well as the benefits of this interaction (conditional outcomes). In the Chapter 3, we focus on the ants to demonstrate, using paired encounters, that ants species are organized in dominance hierarchies based on aggressiveness. This hierarchies affects the numerical dominance based on territoriality and, more importantly, in the dominance of interactions and nectar. Keeping this line of thought, we demonstrated in Chapter 4 that not all ants that collect nectar really protect the plant against herbivores but only the ecological dominant and highly interacted species. Finally, we close the thesis demonstrating in Chapter 5 that the ant species interacted with plants during the day are not the same at night, but this diurnal-nocturnal turnover does not affect the structure of the interactions by only changing the dominant species. This study brings behavioural and empirical evidences on the importance of the identity of the ant species and its ecological dominance, as well the effect of the nectar quality, for the structure of ant-plant interactions and effectiveness of mutualisms. / As formigas que recolhem o néctar das plantas com nectários extraflorais (EFN) podem defendê-las contra ataques de herbívoros. Muitos casos desse tipo de mutualismo foram descritos mas ainda é preciso entender os mecanismos que estruturam essas interações. Neste estudo, esse problema foi abordado através de observações de campo e experimentos sobre o comportamento das formigas compilados em cinco capítulos. Especificamente, foi avaliado o investimento da planta em atrair formigas (qualidade do néctar) e a relação competitiva entre formigas pelo néctar (hierarquias de dominância) como mecanismos estruturadores das interações formiga-planta (partição das interações). Todo o estudo ocorreu em áreas do ecossistema Campo Rupestre, localizadas em Ouro Preto (Brasil), de junho de 2011 a março de 2014. No Capítulo 1, observamos que redes de interação formiga-planta em Campo rupestre é aninhada e generalizada como esperado para mutualismos, mas difere da rede formiga-hemíptero, seu equivalente ecológico, apesar de compartilharem as mesmas espécies de formigas interagentes. No Capítulo 2, nós aprofundamos no efeito dos recursos estruturando interações, e mostramos que a qualidade mais do que a quantidade de néctar determina o padrão de interação entre formigas (32 espécies) e plantas (10 espécies), bem como os benefícios desta interação (benefícios condicionais). No Capítulo 3, nós demonstramos através de encontros interespecíficos pareados que as formigas são organizadas em hierarquias de dominância comportamental baseadas em agressividade. Essa hierarquia afeta a dominância numérica por territorialidade e, mais importante, o domínio das interações e do néctar. Mantendo esta linha de pensamento, demonstramos no Capítulo 4 que nem todas as formigas que coletam néctar realmente protegem a planta contra herbívoros mas somente as espécies dominantes e altamente interagidas. Finalmente, fechamos a tese demonstrando no Capítulo 5 que as espécies de formiga que interagem com as plantas durante o dia não são o mesmo à noite, mas esta rotatividade diurno-noturno não afeta a estrutura das interações devido a troca específica da formiga dominante. Este estudo traz evidências comportamentais e empíricas sobre a importância da identidade de espécies de formiga e sua dominância ecológica, assim como da qualidade do recurso, para a estrutura de rede da formiga-planta e eficácia do mutualismo. / Doutor em Ecologia e Conservação de Recursos Naturais
