A functional analysis of the defense response of Glycine max as it relates to parasitism by the plant parasitic nematode Heterodera glycines

Niraula, Prakash Mani 03 May 2019 (has links)
The soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, a plant parasitic pest, causes severe yield losses of soybean (Glycine max). Although a number of studies have identified various genes that function in defense, including a role for the vesicular transport machinery acting against H. glycines in infected roots, a regulatory mechanism occurring behind the transcriptional engagement of the vesicular transport system and delivery of the transported cargo proteins is not fully understood. The main goal of the current study is to determine the functional effect of genetically engineering the circadian clock gene, CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 (CCA1) in G. max to examine a role on H. glycines parasitism. The outcome of the study has determined the functional effect of main clock component CCA1-1 along with other oscillator genes such as TIMING OF CAB 1 (TOC1-1), GIGANTEA (GI-1) and CONSTANS (CO-4) to enhance resistance against H. glycines parasitism. Further, the reduced level of the expression of Gm-CCA1-1 in infected roots, in comparison to uninfected roots, has demonstrated that clock components might have arrested and altered its expression during the nematode infection process. The study has also investigated the role of XYLOGLUCAN ENDO-TRANSGLYCOSYLASE /HYDROLASE (XTH), Gm-XTH43, during the resistance process soybean has to H. glycines. The results have demonstrated higher xyloglucan (XyG) amounts to be synthesized in the Gm-XTH43 overexpressing (OE) lines. In contrast, there is less XyG in the Gm-XTH43 RNA interference (RNAi) lines that have a negatively regulated XTH gene. These observations have led to elucidating the role in the potential cell wall rearrangement and the underlying metabolic processes required for the generation of the proper XyG architecture required for defense occurring outside of the plant cell. Furthermore, the observed result of lower level of weight average molecular weight (WAMW) of XyG in Gm-XTH43-OE and higher MW of XyG in Gm-XTH43-RNAi than respective control roots have demonstrated a key role in, presumably, changing the cell wall by the remodeling of the XyG chain as it relates to the cell wall architecture.

An African Perspective on Reforming Sovereign Debt Restructuring of Privately Held Debt

Masamba, Magalie L. January 2020 (has links)
In the past decades, financial crises have recast the spotlight on sovereign debt restructuring (SoDR). Despite decades of discussion on how to reform SoDR, it still raises complex legal tensions. Among these tensions is the current lack of a mechanism to administer SoDR and the fact that the current SoDR regime is fragmented and leads to suboptimal and unfair results. This thesis critically assesses these tensions, with a focus on the international reform of the restructuring of privately held sovereign bonds. In making its contribution to the discourse on SoDR, this study seeks to bridge the gap between the legal and policy debates on SoDR. The novelty of the approach in this study is that it aims to add an African perspective to the international literature on the procedural, normative and conceptual reform of SoDR. Towards this end, the question of how to reform the SoDR landscape is addressed within the framework of a developmental and a human rights approach. This paradigm through which SoDR should also be viewed has only begun to feature in the literature recently and thus requires further evaluation. This study assesses the historical evolution of SoDR, the current challenges in the contemporary era of SoDR and evaluates the corresponding proposals for reform. While acknowledging the role that the contractual approach (the primary mechanism for SoDR) has already played in the current landscape, this study argues that this approach alone is not sufficient to ensure fair, transparent and prompt restructuring. The study consequently assesses the policy debate on viable options for reform. / Thesis (LLD)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Centre for Human Rights / LLD / Unrestricted

Discussing the future development of DRAM industry of Taiwan in Financial aspects

Lin, Shu-Jyuan 05 July 2010 (has links)
¡@¡@Crushing the whole world in 2008, Global financial crisis caused a loss to Taiwan DRAM industry up to hundred billion dollar, which forced government and entrepreneur confront the problem of shortage of R&D. In order to improve the competitiveness of DRAM industry, Ministry of Economic Affairs set up TIMC. However, the corporation ended at the end of 2009 due to rejected by the Legislative Department. The problem still needs to be solved, so we will focus on how to improve this problem and use financial data of several main DRAM companies to analyze them by five categories, like production and investment capacity, asset use efficiency, earning capacity, financial flexibility and innovative capacity, etc. From analysis results we get the following problems: 1. Huge capital expenditure but competitiveness still weaken. 2. Single product portfolio couldn¡¦t help improve business cycle so that make insufficient capacity utilization. 3. Deteriorating financial situation and insufficient fund. 4. Lack of innovation ability, domestic industry has to rely on foreign technique authorization. In general, scattered resources, lack of autonomous technology and narrow product range are the key problems. We think integration sources and focused investment can avoid wasting funds. Besides, product diversification can offset the risk of gross margin decline and reduce business cycle fluctuations on gross margin. And developing autonomous technology can reduce using current OEM business model. Furthermore, this essay will propose a three-step scheme to DRAM industry for reference.

Practical issues of corporate restructuring¡VA study of pharmaceutical companies

Tsai, Chi-Chen 31 August 2011 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of restructuring the company into financial difficulties the company can make by corporate restructuring procedures, the company has re-rehabilitation may be an opportunity to make a comeback. Although the corporate restructuring law conception fine, but the actual success of corporate restructuring are too low, and the case company is one of the successful cases. To understand the success of the process of corporate restructuring cases in this study will use the case study method. With access to several key players in the restructuring process, the interview will collate the case a key factor in the success of corporate restructuring. The study reached the following conclusions. First, the case is due to corporate restructuring with banks' own liquidity problems operational difficulties, resulting in companies facing financial problems. Second, faced with staff that the process of restructuring, legal cases, and re-engineering business for the company who are not familiar with such challenges. Third, the restructuring strategy includes: communicating with stakeholders, dealing with litigation, research and development into new products, expand business and markets. Fourth, the case company to create value is developed and patented new products, new market development. Fifth, the case is due to the success of corporate restructuring were re-, re-engineering supervisor with the operators of perseverance, staff cohesion and trust of customers, legal affairs are handled properly and expand the market and new product development.
