Les agences de presse de Roumanie et la circulation internationale de l'information (1877-1940) / Press agencies of romania and the international circulation of rules

Ionescu, Gina-Carmen 13 January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis we analyze the development of press agencies in Romania and the international circulation of news during the period of 1877-1940. The press agencies are studied as actors and vectors of the international communication as well as reporters of the same events. The three parts of the study address the following questions: the first part examines the notions of event, information, circulation of information, and dispatch, in order to explain them in the contextof the work of a press agency. In this first part we have also considered the geopolitical, geoeconomical and geotechnological background of the evolution of our actors. The second part ofthe thesis attempts to answer questions on the history, actions and interactions of the press agencies which operated on the Romanian territory in period and location analyzed. It turns out that the pressagencies make a privileged ground for airing foreign policy options. In our case, we mainly focusedon the relations Romania had with France and neighbors, while only briefly touching those withother countries in Europe. The third part of the thesis explores the process of news circulation fromand to Romania during the time we mentioned, trying to answer the question whether the close linkbetween the agencies and the foreign ministries of affairs have influenced the release andtransmition of the agency’s dispatch. In support of this assessment two case studies were analyzed, zooming in the in critical moments. Our conclusion is that a press agency has plays a double role, of collector-producer-broadcaster ofinformation as well as an ideological actor.

The safety of journalists: an assessment of perceptions of the origins and implementation of policy at two international television news agencies

Venter, Sahm January 2005 (has links)
Being a journalist today can be a deadly pursuit, particularly for those covering conflict and other dangerous assignments. In 2004 more journalists and other media workers were killed than in the last ten years. While it is impossible to guarantee that journalists will not be killed or injured, kidnapped or detained, a policy has been created to help protect them in the course of their duties. This study examines the perceptions of journalists working for two international television news agencies about this safety policy called the ‘Joint code of practice for journalists working in conflict zones’. This policy was adopted in November 2000 by five major television companies including the television news agencies Reuters Television and Associated Press Television News. This study finds that the policy had significant flaws in how it was formulated and how it is communicated, implemented and reviewed. Recognising the existence of unequal relations of power and conflicting interests at play in any policy process, this study stresses that in the case of the journalist safety policy, all stakeholders should have participated in the relevant policy stages. This argument arises from researching the policy document as well as from the point of view of managers, and particularly journalists who work on dangerous assignments, either full-time or on a freelance basis for either of the two television news agencies. It finds that while journalists are not generally aware of the policy, they do practice many of its elements as well as a range of their own custom-made strategies to protect themselves. The result is to make the policy less effective than it could be.

Effect of ontology hierarchy on a concept vector machine's ability to classify web documents

Graham, Jeffrey A. 01 January 2009 (has links)
As the quantity of text documents created on the web grows the ability of experts to manually classify them has decreased. Because people need to find and organize this information, interest has grown in developing automatic means of categorizing these documents. In this effort, ontologies have been developed that capture domain specific knowledge in the form of a hierarchy of concepts. Support Vector Machines are machine learning methods that are widely used for automated document categorization. Recent studies suggest that the classification accuracy of a Support Vector Machine may be improved by using concepts defined by a domain ontology instead of using the words that appear in the document. However, such studies have not taken into account the hierarchy inherent in the relationship between concepts. The goal of this dissertation was to investigate whether the hierarchical relationships among concepts in ontologies can be exploited to improve the classification accuracy of web documents by a Support Vector Machine. Concept vectors that capture the hierarchy of domain ontologies were created and used to train a Support Vector Machine. Tests conducted using the benchmark Reuters-21578 data set indicate that the Support Vector Machines achieve higher classification accuracy when they make use of the hierarchical relationships among concepts in ontologies.

Rating Objectivity: The Confusions in Nordic ESG Ratings : ESG Ratings Subjectivity and its Consequences

Rydholm, John, Schultzberg Bagge, Samuel January 2020 (has links)
Environmental, Social and Governance measurements have significantly increased in usage due to growing concerns for environmental and sustainability problems in today’s world. However, with no commonly agreed-upon criteria for ESG ratings, the scoring measure creates confusion both at the investor and company level. Besides, ESG agencies have different processes and parameters for measuring ESG compliance, which contributes to the problem. The study examines four ESG rating agencies’ rating models and ESG scores to get a better understanding of deviations in ESG scores among Nordic companies. By also studying the correlation amongst ESG scores and market capitalizations in firms, the paper hopes to shed light on if any relationships exist between them. Our results show that the four major ESG raters in the study showed a weak to a non-significant correlation against each other. The maximum correlation found was 0.419 between Thomson Reuters and MSCI. RobecoSAM and MSCI showed the lowest significant correlation at 0.291. Sustainalytics was detected not to show any significant correlation with the other raters. Correlation among market capitalization and ESG Raters was detected to not correlate to a greater extent. Only one ESG rater, RobecoSAM, showed a significant size to score-correlation at 0.278 with market capitalization. Thus, market capitalization does not seem to have any significant influence on ESG agencies’ decisions to set scores. Précising the study’s findings, the raters’ methods deviate from one another, but also how ESG raters make use of underlying factors.

Hållbara investeringar : En analys av svenska SR-investerare En studie om hur svenska aktiesparares ESG-snitt påverkas av demografiska och socioekonomiska aspekter / Sustainable investments : An analyze of Swedish SR-investorsA study of how Swedish stockholders’ ESG mean can be affected by demographic and socioeconomic aspects.

Månsson, Johanna, Tingström, Astrid January 2019 (has links)
Background: Swedish investors have an increased interest in sustainable investments, thus the demand for measuring companies’ sustainability work, based on ESG criteria, has increased. Research on who, based on demographic and socioeconomic aspects, that choose to invest in ESG shares is limited. Previous research has mainly studied sustainable fund savings through surveys. Purpose: The thesis aims to analyze whether differences in ESG mean in the stock portfolios of Swedish SR-investors can be explained by demographic and socioeconomic differences. Furthermore, the thesis aims to identify what demographic group has the highest preference for each sub group of ESG. Completion: Through a unique data set, we perform multivariate regressions, which enables a comparison of ESG means in stock portfolios of different demographic groups. Through research questions, we discuss and compare the results with previous research. Conclusion: The study finds that the Swedish SR-investor with the highest ESG mean in the stock portfolio is most likely an older woman, with low income and living in a larger city. Furthermore, the study finds that middle aged and older women, with low income and living in and outside a larger city, have the highest preference for each sub group of ESG. In addition, the study finds both similarities and differences between these results and previous research.
