Esse tema ganha importância com o crescente fortalecimento das políticas e estratégias em favor do livre acesso à informação científica, especialmente no campo da saúde pública. A recente configuração do cenário e da prática da comunicação científica é o ponto de partida para discutir o papel dos periódicos científicos e seus modelos de gestão, que ganham novos desafios com o Movimento pelo Acesso Livre. Da teoria à prática, a pesquisa empírica se dedica a perguntar sobre esses modelos aos 50 editores científicos das principais revistas nacionais em acesso livre disponíveis na biblioteca eletrônica SciELO. Os resultados fornecem indicativos de que persiste um distanciamento entre o que se teoriza e o que se pratica como modelo de gestão de periódico de acesso livre. O Estado ainda é visto como o principal fiel da balança da sustentabilidade dos periódicos brasileiros. O que foi possível aprender e apreender com a pesquisa, e como avançar sobre o tema, são anotações feitas nas considerações finais. / This study analyzes the business models used by open access electronic journals and questions how sustainable they are. This issue gains importance with the increasing strength of the policies and strategies in favor of free access to scientific information, especially in the field of public health. The recent setting of the scenario and practice of scientific communications is the starting point to discuss the role played by scientific journals and their management models, which face new challenges in the Open Access Movement. From theory to practice, the empirical research is devoted to questioning the 50 publishers of the main domestic scientific journals with open access available in the SciELO national electronic library regarding these models. The results show that there is a gap between what is theorized and what is practiced as a management model for open access journals. The State is still seen as the main balance for the true sustainability of Brazilian journals. What was possible to learn from the study, and to advance on the subject, is featured in the notes made in the final considerations.
