The role of information and communication technology within Upriver Halq'eméylem language initiatives : a case study

Bourget, Nicolle Marie 28 March 2014 (has links)
This case study examines the effectiveness of information and communication technology (ICT) in the Upriver Halq'eméylem language activities. The research indicates that ICT has been successful in supporting micro-level activities managed by individuals; however, while certain elements of ICT were identified by participants as having the potential to help increase fluency, fluency has not been achieved. Recommendations include the creation of a catalogue of all content developed and applications in use to be maintained by a central and agreed upon party; the use of applications in a Software as a Service (SaaS) or similar model; continuation of ongoing formal and informal meetings of the individuals who are working to revitalize the language; and, that the community attempt to determine why language is not being spoken while continuing to make the language visible. One additional finding is that the funding available may be driving the adoption of ICT within the language program; additional research is required to fully understand the effects of funding models. While these recommendations are specific to this community, they may support other decentralized language programs.

NATIVE STUDIES IN ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOLS: Revitalizing Indigenous Cultures in Ontario

CHAPUT, PAUL JOSEPH ANDRE 19 April 2012 (has links)
I hypothesize that specific aspects of education are central to the revitalization of culture amongst Aboriginal peoples in Ontario, and that this revitalization is integral to cultural continuity. I will show the relationship between key aspects of education and cultural revitalization as I track and assess the impacts of Ontario's high school Native Studies suite of courses. The key aspects are: the ability to generate and control content, the content itself (who it targets and serves and how it is applied) and how innovative ideas are implemented, through what processes and with whose help. Recent trends emerging from the analysis of Ontario Ministry of Education (OME) data on the implementation of its suite of ten Native Studies high school courses suggest that the consistent efforts of several generations of First Nations, Métis and Inuit educators working behind the scenes since the late 1960s have resulted in significant and meaningful increases in the number of Native Studies courses offered, the number of schools and school boards offering them, and the number of students enrolling. Considering the context of Aboriginal education in Ontario since the 1960s these general results may certainly be interpreted as progressive. I discuss seven catalysts that have had an indisputable influence over the ability of Indigenous educators to exercise an increasing degree of control over the Ontario Ministry of Education Native Studies curricula. While acknowledging the perspectives of scholars such as Taiaiake Albert, Maria Battiste, Pamela Palmater and Marie Brant-Castellano who argue for “Indian control of Indian education” based on the inherent right of Indigenous peoples to self-government - enshrined in Canada’s “Constitution Act” (1982) - my findings indicate that, given the resources and opportunity to lead the creation of Native Studies courses in Ontario, many Indigenous educators, leaders and communities have opted to take proactive roles in the process, all the while participating in the struggle for the Indigenous constitutionally-inherent right to control all aspects of their education. I argue that we are seeing a resurgence of Indigenous cultures in Canada, and more particularly in Ontario. / Thesis (Master, Geography) -- Queen's University, 2012-04-18 18:20:07.041

North End revitalization: landscape architecture as a means to building social capital

Bodnarchuk, David 14 January 2009 (has links)
As North American cities begin to age, our impermanent building methods inevitably lead to urban decay. Much of the housing stock has an expected lifespan and although this can be extended with proper and regular maintenance ultimately, much of this housing will face the bulldozer. Consequently, we are constantly engaged in the continuing cycle of urban revitalization, striving to keep our cities new and novel. This requires an immense amount of reinvestment and for some neighbourhoods, this is not an issue. This is not the case however for neighbourhoods considered to be ‘in distress’ which, face challenges not seen in more affluent areas. Revitalization efforts in at risk areas need to be more sensitive in their approach as they can displace, gentrify, and otherwise exacerbate the problems. This practicum is an exploration of that approach to renewal in grass roots fashion, using urban agriculture as a means to building community.

Community rejuvenation through placemaking initiatives: planners, farmers' markets and urban neighbourhoods, Central Park neighbourhood, Winnipeg, Canada

Velarde Trejo, Fernando 14 November 2012 (has links)
The research project focused on studying the effectiveness of placemaking initiatives to promote social, physical and economic improvements. The case of study is the Central Park neighbourhood in Winnipeg, Manitoba, named after its major public space. The research indicated placemaking initiatives were capable of contributing to increasing safety, promoting community development and enhancing opportunities for social interaction. However, the capacity of placemaking to achieve positive improvements is directly determined by the involved stakeholders. The Central Park initiatives were successful due to the emphasis on engaging the residents and neighbourhood organizations. The residents were given the opportunity to meaningfully share their experience and aspirations with external stakeholders. The collaborative approach to placemaking contributed to the development of a sense of ownership. The residents saw their input reflected in the amenities and programming offered in Central Park. The planning profession can benefit from using placemaking practices to engage in comprehensive planning.

Liu, Yu-Ping Unknown Date (has links)

Revitalisation de langues postvernaculaires : le francoprovençal en Rhône-Alpes et le rama au Nicaragua / Postvernacular languages revitalization : case of francoprovençal in Rhône-Alpes and rama in Nicaragua

Pivot, Benedicte 28 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a critical sociolinguistic analysis of discourses and social practices, and provides an analysis of social processes of revitalization in the case of two endangered languages: Rama in Nicaragua and Francoprovençal in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. It looks particularly at their postvernacular status. This research first proposes a framework for conceptualizing revitalization with the aim of providing social actors with analytical tools to understand the situations in which they are involved. This initial stage also posits that revitalization is not only the expression of linguistic demands but rather it represents the expression, through language, of other, possibly wider, social issues. By arguing that revernacularization is not the main aim of the language movements under scrutiny, this work questions their renewed social role as post-vernacular languages, and looks at how they are framed in terms of a discourse of heritage and valorization of diversity, therefore promoting not only the local but universal values. This thesos shows therefore that language revitalization is not simply (or not primarily) a matter of language. Even deprived of communicative functions, language may be invested with meaning, new meanings, and competing ones too. It can equally be subject to authoritative discourse, in societies that lie on the margins of the dominant cultural centers. Thus, starting with two apparently very dissimilar contexts, we bring out the similarities and question the ways in which language is appropriated, contested and negotiated as a potential resource at a time of alleged homogenization.
