The Freedom of God: A Study in the Pneumatology of Robert Jenson

Henry, James Daryn January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Roberto Goizueta / This dissertation presents a study in the Christian systematic theology of Robert W. Jenson on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, this work seeks to contribute descriptively to Jenson scholarship in the theological academy, to understanding, clarifying and interpreting his role in the contemporary theological scene, while, as itself operating in the discipline of systematic theology, this work also seeks to constructively augment our understanding of the experience of the Holy Spirit in the Church, reckoning with the significance of this theological locus for a number of prominent movements in the current thought and practice of world Christianity. Part I and Part II of this work engage in an exegesis of the content of Jenson’s pneumatology. Here I advance the interpretation that Jenson’s pneumatology can be meaningfully and beneficially coalesced under—without being merely reduced to—the theme of “freedom” or “liberation.” This integrating motif becomes evident as Jenson’s pneumatology is unfolded across a number of other traditional doctrinal loci and interweaved with a number of other ecumenical concerns, examining both the “work” of the Spirit in the world (first part) and the divine “person” of the Spirit (second part). Part III, then, ventures a constructive evaluation and reception of Jenson’s distinctive pneumatological proposals by way of dialectical encounter with three horizons: those of (1) early Christian pneumatology, (2) twentieth century trinitarian theology and (3) liberation theological discourse and praxis. Through this dialectical engagement, I interrogate a number of aspects of Jenson’s divine ontology and theological infrastructure, insofar as they relate to the uniqueness of his pneumatological proposals. With a re-calibration of some of those theological judgments, I argue that certain insights of Jenson’s notion of the Spirit as eternal, personal Freedom in God, as the Unsurpassed One and as the movement of divine self-constitution from the End of Divine Life merit retrieval. This characterization of the person of the Spirit as one of “freedom” or “liberation,” for the believer, for creation, and for God, forges a pneumatological reconstruction of divine transcendence, similarly to what classical theology had done for the persons of the Father and the Son. Such an achievement, I suggest, offers one viable interpretation of the unique role of the Spirit that mediates between traditional-classical trinitarian ontology and the lived experience of the Spirit currently being exhibited, perceived and theorized in various aspects of global theology and leading areas of theological research. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Conspirator-in-Chief : Är President Donald Trump en konspirationsteoretiker? / Conspirator-in-Chief : Is president Donald Trump a conspiracy theorist?

Ardehed, Nils January 2019 (has links)
The 2016 American presidential election sent shockwaves through the world. Hillary Clinton the candidate that most experts predicted where going to win was beaten by a boisterous real estate developer from New York, Donald Trump. The language employed by president Trump both during and after his presidential campaign has been highly controversial, especially with the allusion to different forms of conspiracy theories. This essay investigates how Donald Trump alludes to conspiracy theories in relation to the Mueller investigation.

We first seek to characterize these two philosophical views and present their main arguments. In a second moment, we examine two conditions Kane?s takes as necessary for free will, namely alternative possibilities and ultimate responsibility. In the third chapter we explore specifically the theory of Robert Kane, mainly through the analysis of his work The Significance of Free Will. In the last chapter we discuss and comment on some of the main criticisms of the philosopher's theory. Throughout this work we analyze indeterminism from different perspectives in order to better understand the problems that constitute the greatest challenge to the intelligibility of incompatibilist free will. In the end, we conclude that there is still a way to go in order to respond satisfactorily to some criticisms but it seems too early or too strong to claim that Kane's freedom is not coherent or intelligible. / Esta disserta??o visa estudar o problema da liberdade no debate compatibilismo x incompatibilismo a partir da ?tica de Robert Kane. The emphasis of this research revolves around the attempt of exercising Protestant religious practice in the Portuguese language and the resistance formed in the political-religious scope against such a right in a Roman Catholic country. The research also focuses on Kalley?s stay and activities in the Island of Madeira (1838-1846), which came to be the stage between Catholic and Protestant ideologies, culminating with the exodus and persecution of thousands of people, Kalley being the main target. Then, the sermons in Portuguese and the medical care that he accomplished in Madeira arrives in Brazil in 1855. This research also reveals specific Kalleyan methodology, how he worked independently of any church or missionary organization, even financially, unlike other missionaries at the time, although exercising the same practices of those. This examination of Protestantism informs and discloses the process that culminated with the acquisition of the civil right to registry (birth, marriage and death) by non-Catholics, citizens who did not practice the Common Religion. This paper also examines, the reaction of Kalley's Protestant speech, and reveals details of the resistance of the Catholic Church to allow freedom of worship along with the attempts to discredit the d Protestant practice and ideology. The survey also covers the discussions brought about by the Protestant mission in the Brazilian society, without forgetting to co-relate the factors going on within the Catholic Church who faced various difficulties, such as discussions about the republic, the abolitionist propaganda, foreign immigration, the patronage and the religious question, among other things, episodes that were essential to understanding the role of Robert Reid Kalley and of other missionaries who came after him.

Arthur Peacocke (1924-2006), a physical biochemist turned theologian, is a leading figure deeply engaged in science-religion dialogue. In the course of his career, Peacocke struggles with the question of divine action. He advocates an “Emergentist- Naturalistic-Panenthesitic” (ENP) framework for his divine action project which offers a new paradigm for the divine action discussion. A comprehensive review and critical evaluation of Peacocke’s project will be provided in this thesis. Furthermore, as the impressive work of Peacocke has been reviewed by many scholars, an analytical and critical survey of these responses will be included in this research. / Kung, Wai Han. / Thesis M.Phil. PARTNERSHIPS AND CREATION: A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLARINETIST-COMPOSER PARTNERSHIPS AND HOW THEY CONTRIBUTED TO CLARINET LITERATURE, AND THE INFLUENCE OF ROBERT SPRING ON CONTEMPORARY COMPOSITIONAL OUTPUT FOR THE CLARINET

Sutherland, Adria Leigh 01 January 2018 (has links)
Throughout the history of the clarinet, there have been performers who have inspired composers to write pieces specifically for them. These contributions to clarinet literature have been significant, frequently resulting in an overall shift in the expectations of performers’ abilities, and expanding the range of possibilities for composers. This document first describes the relationships of the following composers and clarinetists, and their resulting impact on clarinet literature: Karl Stamitz and Joseph Beer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Anton Stadler, Louis Spohr and Simon Hermstedt, Carl Maria von Weber and Heinrich Baermann, Johannes Brahms and Richard Mühlfeld, and the numerous commissions of Benny Goodman by some of the most highly-regarded composers of his time. The main purpose of this document is to examine a contemporary clarinetist who has contributed considerably to the repertoire of the clarinet both through his virtuosic performances and his own commissions, Robert Spring. Dr. Spring’s playing, particularly on the release of Dragon’s Tongue (1994), astonished listeners and composers alike, most notably with his mastery of extended techniques such as circular breathing and double tonguing. Within this document is a biography of Dr. Spring, focusing on his early life, his musical training and education, and his work. Additionally, a list of works that he has commissioned with annotations where applicable is included, along with detailed comments on the partnership with Dr. Spring and the resulting creations from composers Stacy Garrop, Eric Mandat, Theresa Martin, Scott McAllister, Whitney Prince, Rodney Rogers, Peter Schickele, and William O. Smith. It is my belief that future scholars will be able to place him within the long line of composer-clarinetist partnerships that have advanced not only the clarinet’s solo and chamber literature, but also the scope of performance techniques required of clarinetists.

ROBERT WALSER: EIN BEITRAG ZUM THEMA DER IDENTITÄT (Interpretation von “Helbling’s Geschichte“)

Hamor, Magdalena M. 01 June 1966 (has links)
Except for literary historians and Germanists, Robert Walser (1878-1956), the Swiss poet, was known until recently only to a small circle of readers. The reason why Robert Walser was “rediscovered” a few years ago and is being read again, is that theme, content and style of his novels – they can be counted on one hand – as well as the several hundred short stories and about four dozen poems , touch upon a constantly more or less urgent problem: man’s ontological inquiry. The unassuming manner of Walser’s fragments and vignettes fascinates and elates the system-weary reader; yet, his lack of assumption is not synonymous with idle chatter. Rather, the absence of presumptuousness is based on the realization that absolutes, whether intellectual, emotional or physical are meaningless. Thus they are incompatible with the “Lebensgefühl” of Walser’s literary protagonist, who suspects essence in the loss of identity of self. It has been said of Robert Walser that he was the first writer to explore the domain of the absurd in a novel. This at the beginning of the 20th century. Walser, quite likely, would be too modest to claim literary avant-garde. The absurdity of uncertainness creates a perspective and attitude which characterize Walser’s literary figures, perspective and attitude similar to the terminal mood at the end of an era, familiar from the writings of Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka and Georg Heym. The mood Walser portrays distinguishes itself insofar that he builds no cosmic or philosophical systems, because he abhorred the finite limits of man’s intellect. Where Kafka’s intellect ad absurdum metamorphoses into the madness of the incapable insect, Walser’s realization transforms into a gay carelessness; a careless superficiality that has healing quality, since it exhausts itself in the service to humanity and revels without point of reference in an existence without system. Nature serves as the poetic spring for the delightful game of the intellect. This paper [written in German] examines the dilemma of identity in two ontological main categories and eight social-philosophical motives. Interpretation of a short story and reference to the entire works of Robert Walser served as the vehicle in this attempt.
