Busca de oligoelementos em rochas vulcânicas / Search of Oligoelements in Volcanic StonesPedro Vinícius Guillaumon 25 August 2014 (has links)
Foram determinadas, utilizando cálculo covariante, 33 elementos químicos (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Dy, Eu, Fe, Hf, K, La, Lu, Mg, Mn, Na, Nd, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, Ti, U, Yb, Zn e Zr), dos quais 21 elementos traço. / Single gamma ray spectroscopy, gama-gama coincidence and anticoincidence spectroscopy have been performed to study 17 volcanic rocks irradiated with neutrons. We have determined, using covariant calculations, 33 chemical elements including 21 trace elements: Al, As, Ba, Ca, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Dy, Eu, Fe, Hf, K, La, Lu, Mg, Mn, Na, Nd, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, Ti, U, Yb, Zn e Zr. We set a maximum limit of detection for iridium in 11 samples. We have determined a maximum value of 0,7 ppb. The results were associated to the astrophysical process that led to the Earth formation. Thorium and uranium abundance ranged between 3 ppm e 9 ppm, except for the samples of Kilimanjaro, which ranged from 40 ppm to 45 ppm. Less than 12 ppm, the Earth\'s Crust abundance of thorium and uranium. Using the heat emitted by Earth to estimate the abundance of them led to significant lower values. We have also determined 10/17 lanthanides, like Ce that has an abundance of 272 (6) ppm and 319 (11) ppm, in the case of Kilimanjaro\'s samples.

Major element and isotopic studies on the James Run/Port Deposit association, Maryland: tectonic analogues and Taconic deformationLesser, Richard Peter January 1982 (has links)
The gneissic Port Deposit pluton and associated James Run metavolcanics bear a fault relation with the Wissahickon metasediments of the Glenarm terrane of the northeastern Maryland Piedmont, USA. Bulk chemical and mineralogical data classify the meta-igneous rocks as a bimodal tholeiite-dacite/tonalite suite with trondhjemitic affinities and indicate that subsolidus alteration during dynamic metamorphism was minor. Comparison of these data with other tectonic environments suggests their generation by partial fusion of amphibolitic basement.
Previous studies have dated magmatic events in the Maryland Piedmont at 520 Ma, 420 Ma, and 300 Ma (Sinha et al., 1980). The U-Pb zircon upper intercept age for the Port Deposit is 525 ± 10 Ma, the Rb-Sr whole rock isochron age is 467 ± 21 Ma, and Rb-Sr model biotite ages are 400 and 300 Ma. Regional and theoretical considerations indicate the 525 zircon age may represent the time of igneous consolidation. Detailed petrographic observations in the Port Deposit indicate the Rb-Sr whole rock age represents the time of deformation and development of gneissic textures. The 467 Middle Ordovician age of deformation for the Port Deposit is interpreted as representative of the Taconic orogeny for the central Appalachian Piedmont; Rb-Sr whole rock systematics were upset, but concurrent anatexis of felsic basement is not locally evident. The fault contact between the Port Deposit and easternmost facies of the Wissahickon places an upper age limit of 467 Ma for that particular facies. Rb-Sr model biotite ages are interpreted as metamorphic cooling phenomenon and reflect the 420 and 300 Ma thermal highs. / Master of Science

Abstract: The water cycle is very important. However, the way textbooks for primary and secondary school have been presenting this theme, doesn't contribute to make rise a scientific idea. To face that problem, in order to work the fragmented vision exposed in Geography and Science textbooks, we developed differentiated scholar activities that helped us investigate how 11-12 years old students interpretate phenomena related to underground water. We analyze one class realized in a public school at the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP (this town depends on underground water for public water supply). This class was based on the student's manipulation of rock samples, through wich we tried to map their previous ideas and discuss their cognitive difficulties at learning the concepts of porosity and permeability. We found that the "hidden" property of the underground water benefits the appearance of non-scientific ideas to explain the water trades in this kind of reservoir. Despite the fact that they realize infiltration in porous rocks, the students create their own interpretation when reporting how water gets stored within the rock. Student's most common explanation for that is to relate the rock to a sponge. This way of thinking is related to other researches about the theme and points to the necessity of a better qualification (initial or late education) of teachers. Although the comprehension of water cycle and the paths of underground water is considered important socially, economically and culturally in our society, in primary and secondary schools, short attention have been dismissed to this subject. / Mestrado / Mestre em Ensino e Historia de Ciencias da Terra
