Role model stories delivered via YouTube: evaluating the impact of health promotion focused on exercise self-efficacy and exercise behaviorsStanforth, M. Dixie 19 October 2010 (has links)
The goal of this project was to utilize social modeling, one of the antecedents of self-efficacy, to determine whether participants from The University of Texas Division of Housing and Food Service (DHFS) who chose to view a bilingual exercise role model video on YouTube increased exercise self-efficacy or exercise behaviors, compared to those who did not. The message from their coworkers featured in the video was simple: “If I can do this, you can, too,” and personal stories and success strategies were blended together to encourage and motivate viewers. The video compilation highlighted specific success strategies, in addition to employees sharing stories about what motivated them to change, or barriers they had to overcome in order to succeed. The video clip included both Spanish and English speakers, and the alternate language translation appeared as subtitles in all frames. Participants completed surveys prior to the launch of the role model video and again after four weeks (N = 113). Neutral promotional materials, both print and electronic, were disseminated to generate awareness about the video and to compare the relative effectiveness of different techniques. E-mails were associated with the greatest spikes; YouTube tabulated 210 unique views during the four weeks. Coworker word of mouth was the primary way participants heard about the video for those who watched (52.8%) and those who did not (33.6%). Despite concerns that participants would not watch the video, 46.9% of the participants did so. Most (88.7%) of those who watched the video were able to recall specific story details, indicating the use of YouTube as a delivery platform for health interventions is promising. Mastery of exercise was the strongest predictor of exercise-self efficacy and exercise; exercise self-efficacy did not emerge as a key predictor variable. There were no differences in exercise levels, exercise self-efficacy, social support, or collective efficacy between those who watched the video and those who did not. While the exercise role model video was well-conceived and developed, allowing participants to control exposure without associated exercise sessions was not sufficient to bring about a measurable change in efficacy beliefs or exercise behaviors. / text

Men against violence. Analysis of social awareness campaigns in Poland.Gabler, Łukasz January 2016 (has links)
This thesis addresses gender, masculinities and intimate partner violence in Poland. More specifically, the aim of this study is to problematize how masculinities are represented in Polish anti-violence social campaigns. Intimate partner violence is one of the most common forms of violence against women and is a major problem that affects both men and women in Poland. The study approaches violence from a feminist position, and considers men's violence to be an important element constructing masculinities. In the study, social campaigns are considered as policies which have a great potential to influence existing masculinities types and to introduce new, non-violent models of being a man. With the use of Bacchi`s “What`s the problem represented to be?” method and an intersectional perspective on gender and masculinities, Polish anti-violence campaigns are analysed to find out if they reproduce and/or challenge any social assumptions regarding men`s violence. The study found that even though campaigns challenged some of the existing masculinities types, they also referred to existing discourses of men as protectors, providers and fighters. Final conclusions underline the need for awareness social campaigns directed towards men and with men as role models. Refraining from the use of masculinities connected with heroism and dominance, aggression and violence is recommended.

The Role Model Effect on Gender Equity: How are Female College Students Influenced by Female Teaching Assistants in Science?January 2010 (has links)
abstract: The gender gap of women in science is an important and unresolved issue in higher education and occupational opportunities. The present study was motivated by the fact that there are typically fewer females than males advancing in science, and therefore fewer female science instructor role models. This observation inspired the questions: Are female college students influenced in a positive way by female science teaching assistants (TAs), and if so how can their influence be measured? The study tested the hypothesis that female TAs act as role models for female students and thereby encourage interest and increase overall performance. To test this "role model" hypothesis, the reasoning ability and self-efficacy of a sample of 724 introductory college biology students were assessed at the beginning and end of the Spring 2010 semester. Achievement was measured by exams and course work. Performance of four randomly formed groups was compared: 1) female students with female TAs, 2) male students with female TAs, 3) female students with male TAs, and 4) male students with male TAs. Based on the role model hypothesis, female students with female TAs were predicted to perform better than female students with male TAs. However, group comparisons revealed similar performances across all four groups in achievement, reasoning ability and self-efficacy. The slight differences found between the four groups in student exam and coursework scores were not statistically significant. Therefore, the results did not support the role model hypothesis. Given that both lecture professors in the present study were males, and given that professors typically have more teaching experience, finer skills and knowledge of subject matter than do TAs, a future study that includes both female science professors and female TAs, may be more likely to find support for the hypothesis. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Modeling My Mother? An Exploration of the Relationship between a Mother's Occupational Status and Her Daughter's Career AspirationsWagner, Megan Virginia January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Sara Moorman / This research looks at the ways in which mothers influence their daughter’s educational achievements and occupational aspirations. The goal is to determine whether the Role-Model Hypothesis or Grades Hypothesis explains the relationship more. According to the literature, the Role-Model Hypothesis is based on ideas of socialization and gender-role stereotypes while the Grades Hypothesis is based on the idea of transmission of social capital, which improves test scores. In order to test these hypotheses, a series of multinomial logistic regression models were run on the responses of a sample of 7,716 female students and their mothers to the Educational Longitudinal Study, (ELS) 2002, Base Year. The results provide evidence in support of the Grades Hypothesis. A mother with higher educational attainment and a more prestigious occupation is more likely to have a daughter with higher test scores, with higher test scores leading to higher expectations and aspirations by the daughter. Since, the available informational and technological resources constitute a source of prosperity and differentiation for the organisations, the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) is becoming more crucial and vital. The thirty years of the CIO's existence have shown a path of changes and difficulties on defining and establishing the particular role within the organisational context. The present study examines the CIO role evolution over the last thirty years, analyses the CIO role at the present time and discusses the CIO role in the future. The examination of the evolution of the CIO role identifies four main areas of interest that are used as the conceptual framework of the study. These areas relate to business strategy, innovation and competitive advantage, relationships building and external environment. Based on a qualitative research approach, nine case studies of existing CIOs are conducted and analysed from the private and the public sector. The analysis provides insights about the responsibilities of the CIOs, currently, regarding each one of the role aspects and the furthermore, particular responsibilities for these aspects. The results of the analysis demonstrate that within the CIO role responsibilities there are activities such as active participation in the strategic planning, exploitation of information management as an enabler of innovation, active facilitation of consultation processes with the stakeholders and finally, networking with outside organisations such as suppliers and customers but also networking with peers to share best practices. Regarding the future of the CIO role, it is argued that the CIO role includes responsibilities relating to technology management and it is counterproductive to separate these responsibilities to another C-level executive such as a CTO. Finally, it is argued that the CIO role enhances the dynamic capabilities of the organisation by helping it to improve its learning processes and the way it transforms its information resources. The results of the study have implications to both industry and academia. The proposed CIO role model could be used by industry as a guideline for the job description of the role in question, as well as an evaluation scheme for the post holders. With respect to academia, the proposed role model could be used to identify the skills necessary for a CIO and thus, to help inform areas in which university educational programmes should focus on.

The subject of the current study is "man as an elementary school teacher". The aim of the thesis is to determine what the role of a male elementary school teacher is and what this role involves. The current study is divided into two parts, the theoretical part and the empirical part. The theoretical part includes the description of the teaching profession (the teaching career path, career identity, and personality of the teacher), the relationship between the teacher and the student, and gender issues in the school environment. The core of the theoretical part is the discussion of the previous research from abroad regarding male teachers. The empirical part is a case study of a male elementary school teacher from one of the elementary schools in Prague. The methods used involve interviews with other teachers, questionnaires from parents and a longitudinal observation of the class. The results of the case study are then further extended by statements of eight male teachers from a range of elementary schools in Prague. The study has revealed that one of the aspects of the male teacher's role is "teacher as a friend". The reason for this might be a more liberal style of teaching. This leads to specific dilemmas in the teacher's behaviour towards the students, their parents, and the society. Key words...

Att människor som levt tillsammans väljer att gå skilda vägar är i dagens samhälle ett vanligtförekommande fenomen. Många berörs på något sätt och det finns skäl att anta att detpåverkar människors beteenden och upplevelser av relationer. Syftet med föreliggande studievar att skapa en djupare förståelse för hur människor upplever sig ha påverkats av enseparation. För att kunna uppfylla syftet användes en fenomenografisk ansats. Data samladesin genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med åtta individer och analyserades med hjälp av entematisk innehållsanalys. Fyra av deltagarna hade föräldrar som separerat då de var barnvarav en av de även själv hade separerat, två individer vars föräldrar separerade i tonårensamt två individer som själva genomgått en separation. Resultatet visade att tilliten irelationer till andra, främst i kärleksrelationer påverkade individerna på ett negativt sätt tillföljd av att de upplevt en separation. Resultatet visade också att individerna har utvecklatstrategier för att hantera separationer och konsekvenser av en separation. De intervjuadebeskrev att anknytningen till föräldrarna på ett eller annat sätt varit bristande. I vissa fallredan i tidig ålder, till båda föräldrarna, men även i de fall där anknytningen varit god tillden ena föräldern verkar det inte vara tillräckligt för att skydda individerna från problem isina egna kärleksrelationer. / In today´s society it is a common phenomenon for people who have lived together to goseparate ways. Several people are affected and there are reasons to believe that it affectspeople’s behaviors and experiences of relationships. The purpose of this study was to get adeeper understanding of how people experience that they have been affected by a separation.To fulfill the purpose a phenomenographic method was used. To collect data, eightparticipants were interviewed, and data was analyzed through a thematic content analysismethod. Four of the participants had parents who had separated when they were children andone of them had also separated from a partner. Two of them had parents who had separatedwhen they were teenagers, and two had separated from a partner. The results showed that thetrust to other people, mainly in romantic relationships, was negatively affected afterexperiencing a separation. The results also showed that these individuals had developeddifferent strategies to cope better with separations as well as consequences of a separation.The participants described that the attachment to their parents was lacking in some way oranother. Some of them experienced lacking attachment at an early age, some to both theirparents, but even when experiencing good attachment to one of their parents it was notenough to protect them from having problems in their own relationships.

Is the feeling mutual? : The effect of same-sex teachers: Disentangling teacher bias from role model effectsBackman, Malin January 2019 (has links)
This paper studies the effect of same-sex teachers on students attending Economics A at Uppsala University from 2013 to 2018. Having a female teacher has no significant effect on female students’ exam performance but a significant and positive effect on the likelihood of attending the subsequent course in Economics. Certain types of female teachers have negative effects on male students’ exam performance in certain specifications and no effect on the likelihood of them attending the subsequent course. It was not possible to identify the underlying mechanism behind these results.

Nurses’ Perceptions of Self as Role Models of HealthHurley, Shelia 01 December 2015 (has links)
Given the sad state of obesity and lifestyle-related illnesses in the US, nurses, as the largest and most trusted health profession, must take the cause of health promotion seriously and personally. This study seeks to close the gap in knowledge of nurses’ perception of self as a role model of health and personal healthy lifestyle behaviors. This study focuses on four specific behaviors that lead to a healthy lifestyle: limit alcohol, avoid tobacco, improve nutrition, and engage in physical activity. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between nurses’ health practices and their perceptions of self as role models for health promotion using constructs of the Social Cognitive Theory. The final sample consisted of 804 registered nurses in the state of Tennessee. In this study, 4% report smoking, 24.9% drink alcohol, 34% are overweight and 30% obese. Approximately 70% do not meet the weekly physical activity recommendations of 150-minutes and 32.8% follow guidelines for a healthy diet only 50% of the time or less. There was a significant correlation between following a healthy diet or physical activity and the Self as a Role Model of Health Promotion (SARMHEP) scores. Based on the regression analysis, working in an acute care or ambulatory setting negatively affected the SARMHEP, as opposed to age and gender having a positive effect on the SARMHEP score. This study has the potential to provide key information that can be used to promote health among nurses.
