In the State of São Paulo, where the research was performed, there are many controversies, criticizing mainly the existence of this institution and its consequences on such an individualist society. By the advent of modernity, the relations are more fluid, there is the pluralism, and following, meaning crisis at which new responses are sought even in old institutions such as religion. Just as São Paulo State s Police (Polícia Militar), religion is questioned as an institution and we witness this mainly through syncretism, responses to social situations regarding religiosity and socio-cultural processes. At the Romão Gomes Military Police Prison, syncretism is evident once there are many religious manifestations and many inmates attend various cults which are not necessarily from the same religion. Due to this possibility and due to the fact that religion is part of the identity policy of the place, this research s objective was to comprehend the importance and sense given to religion by many inmates. From theoretical discussions, participation in cults and narratives of the inmate s life stories, it was revealed that there is metamorphosis and emancipation possibilities, which do not occur automatically, but in the process of sense creation and submission to religion / Em tempos em que a violência é cada vez maior nos centros urbanos e a Polícia Militar, instituição agenciadora da violência pelo Estado, está cada vez mais em pauta, seja por sua violência, pela violência sofrida através dos ataques de facções criminosas ou por discussões sobre seu funcionamento e surgimento, é importante notar e questionar a existência de um presídio próprio para seus integrantes. No Estado de São Paulo, local em que foi realizada a pesquisa, há grandes discussões, com muitas pesquisas realizadas para criticar a existência dessa instituição e suas consequências numa sociedade individualista. Com o advento da modernidade, as relações estão mais fluidas, tem-se o pluralismo e com ele a crise de sentido, momento em que novas respostas são procuradas, mesmo que em velhas instituições como a religião. Da mesma forma que a Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo, a religião é questionada como instituição, presenciamos essa questão, principalmente por meio do sincretismo, respostas a situações sociais relacionada à religiosidade e ao processo sociocultural. No Presídio da Polícia Militar Romão Gomes , o sincretismo é evidente uma vez que existem muitas manifestações religiosas e muitos internos frequentam mais de um culto, não necessariamente da mesma religião. Por essa possibilidade e pelo fato de a religião fazer parte da política de identidade deste local, o objetivo da pesquisa foi compreender o sentido dado à religião por diversos internos. A partir das discussões teóricas, participação nos cultos e narrativas de histórias de vida dos internos entrevistados, foi possível perceber que há metamorfose e possibilidade de emancipação, que não ocorre automaticamente, mas no processo de criação de sentido e submissão à religião, como percebido
