Addressing obesity in Roma communities: a community readiness approach

Islam, Shahid, Small, Neil A., Bryant, M., Yang, T., Cronin de Chavez, A., Saville, F., Dickerson, J. 20 August 2018 (has links)
Yes / Participation in community programmes by the Roma community is low whilst this community presents with high risk of poor health and low levels of wellbeing. To improve rates of participation in programmes compatibility must be achieved between implementation efforts and levels of readiness in the community. The Community Readiness Model (CRM) is a widely used toolkit which provides an indication of how prepared and willing a community is to take action on specific issues. We present findings from a CRM assessment for the Eastern European Roma community in Bradford, UK on issues related to nutrition and obesity. We interviewed key respondents identified as knowledgeable about the Roma community using the CRM. This approach applies a mixed methodology incorporating readiness scores and qualitative data. A mean community readiness score was calculated enabling researchers to place the community in one of nine possible stages of readiness. Interview transcripts were analysed using a qualitative framework analysis to generate contextual information. An overall score consistent with vague awareness was achieved, which indicates a low level of community readiness. This score suggests there will be a low likelihood of participation in currently available nutrition and obesity programmes. To our knowledge this is the first study to apply the CRM in the Roma community for any issue. We present the findings for each of the six dimensions that make up the CRM together with salient qualitative findings. / Better Start Bradford

Simboli romske usmene poezije –zastupljenost i značenje

Aleksandrović Marija 16 September 2015 (has links)

objavljenim zbirkama romskog usmenog
stvaralaštva, kao i na novosakupljenom stvaralaštvu
sa teritorije AP Vojvodine koji imaju odreĎeno
značenje i ulogu u kulturnom miljeu Roma.
pojave, pojmovi, odlike sveta i čoveka pored
osnovnog, mogu imati simboličko značenje, a na
njima se zasniva osobeno viĎenje sveta. Simboličku
vrednost imaju pojave vezane za čovekov život i
njegov opstanak, kao i čovekovo telo, biljke,
životinje i apstrakni predmeti. Pritom pre možemo
govoriti o mogućim simboličkim značenjima nego o
”pravim” simbolima. Ova značenja su, po pravilu,
ambivalentna, ista pojava ili biće mogu imati
pozitivno i negativno značenje.
formiraju u drugim tradicionalnim kulturama.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This dissertation deals with the relationship established between the female characters of the Tacitus‟s Annals, and the making of the Nero‟s image as an evil emperor. Identifying rhetorical devices relating to women, especially in the Annals‟s books XIII to XVI, as part of the narrative regarding the events of the Nero‟s principate (54-68 AD), aims to understand how Tacitus had used the female characters as a rhetorical tool to censure the emperor. These criticisms indicate moral values which the Roman society was embeded. In this way, we analyse how the interactions between the characters and the composition of exempla (examples) show models of vices and virtues. In order to substantiate our analysis, we will explore questions about the social and political conditions in which these women have lived, especially those who belonged to domus Caesarum (Caesars household).

__________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This thesis aims to analyze the works of Sallust, Bellum Iugurthinum and Bellum Catilinae. Firstly, it is studied the Roman Republic as regards its administration during the II and I centuries BC, and particularly how this period suffered numerous transformations that culminated in a civil strife that led to a new form of government. This period is analyzed in its specificities, thus avoiding generalizing it as a monolithic bloc. It was decided to explain the idea of memory and its attributes for Roman and Greek historiography concerning its direct application in political action. The concept of memory was intimately linked to that of mos maiorum and its significance for the Roman culture of the last two centuries of the Republic. Therefore, Sallust points to the increase of political dissent in the political scene and tries to find possible solutions to deter it and reestablish the political consensus. In this sense, characters like Catiline and Jugurtha, Caesar and Cato, illustrate the scenario of political conflicts of the Roman Republic as well as presents ways of addressing them.

___________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This dissertation analyzes the representations of Emperor Claudius by three sources: Seneca’s Apocolocyntosis, Tacitus’ Annales, and Suetonius’ Vita Caesarum. Such representations of Claudius, who ruled from 41 to 54, in general reveal a weak and unqualified emperor, manipulated by women and freedmen. More recently the historiography has changed its view of this emperor by giving more importance to his political decisions than to his personality or events in the imperial Court. Even in the representations of Claudius by Seneca, Tacitus and Suetonius it is possible to discern contrasting elements that compose the image of this emperor. This study seeks to point out these elements and explain their respective reasons by the sources above mentioned. By understanding the process of composition of the representation of Claudius, we can perceive the expectations of the aristocracy in relation to the emperor and to the Roman society as a whole

In the context of Late Antiquity, we observe the ideals of Royalty which spread throughout the Roman Empire in the IV century AD, especially the reports of two writers who shared political events which occurred between the governments of Constantius II and Theodosius (337-395 AD), they are: the philosopher Themistius (317-388 AD) with his political speeches and the military Ammianus Marcellinus (325/330-395 AD) with his work Res Gestae. Throughout our research, we aimed to observe the characteristics of each writer and merge their life experiences to find the convergent and divergent points of their concepts around the imperial responsibilities. Meanwhile, we highlight the interlinking between Romans and barbarians, very perceptible at that time; since this process of culture interaction influenced the thoughts of the ancient late writers here studied. We also sought to observe how a philosopher and a military developed such ideals in relation to two distinct rulers: Jovian (363-364 AD) and Valentinian I (364-375 AD), for this a more specific analysis of the Speeches V was made – to Jovian – and VI – to Fraternal Love or on Humanity – Themistius‟ and Books XV to XXX by Ammianus Marcellinus for being Emperors directly elected by the Roman Army, without any help from other agencies of the Roman society. Moreover, they are, so far, the least explored Roman emperors by the Iberian, French, British and national historiographies checked so far. In general, when such historiographies refer to these rulers, they are mentioned in a pejorative way. Thus, in a time of great socio-political and cultural excitement, two non-Christian writers write their papers in order to remind their audience of the importance of virtues and, because of that, both of them base themselves in examples from the classical tradition; the same way we perceive other elements that permeate the structure of both good rulers: Themistius and Ammianus Marcellinus

Diskriminace Romů na trhu práce? / Roma discrimination on the labour market?

Suchá, Jitka January 2016 (has links)
This diploma deals with the problem of the participation of Roma in the work market. The scope of the investigation is focused on the Broumov region, where I look for possible causes, hurdles and reasons for Roma unemployment. The empirical part deals with gathering data from three different informants. The goal of this research is a complex overview of the actual situation from the view of employers, Roma themselves, and the state, represented by the Job Centre (Work Offive). To this end I used the involved observation method, and in-depth interviews. The target of the diploma was to find out what the main hurdles are in the scope of the participation of Broumov Roma in the work market, and what are the main obstacles to the participation of Roma in the work market. The result of the completed research is that among the main obstacles are insufficient education, low qualifications, frequent property re-possession and the unwillingness of employers to employ Roma. The source of this unwillingness is distrust of Roma due to bad experience with this minority.
