Cette étude vise à analyser la façon dont la présence du personnage dans le roman portugais des trente dernières années est conditionnée par l’imbrication de données figuratives et leur défiguration. Le personnage se fait ainsi l’écho des bouleversements économiques, politiques et sociétaux provoqués par la chute de la dictature. Il apparaît alors comme le moyen efficace d’interroger les anciens modèles et d’en figurer de nouveaux. Le personnage semble donc proposer diverses figurations de l’humain, relatives à chacun des auteurs étudiés qui font entendre une voix individuelle et originale. Ainsi, dans certains romans, l’impossibilité d’une identité stable dont l’échec mène à la défiguration renvoie, dans d’autres textes, à la possibilité de la figure dans sa diversité et sa dissémination. Les indices de cette ambivalence apparaissent dès le niveau textuel où la défiguration du récit par la disqualification de l’action, le désordre des hiérarchies entre les personnages, et le brouillage des frontières entre textes, auteur et personnage concourt à rendre la diversité de figuration du personnage. Celle-ci semble alors se développer dans l’effet-personne mis en place par le texte et qui assimile le personnage à un individu identifiable et connaissable, malgré la crise qui peut le menacer. De l’extérieur vers l’intériorité, le personnage s’étend en profondeur. L’intériorité du personnage est néanmoins assaillie par la perception d’un monde impossible dont les repères instables façonnent un milieu hostile et inhabitable. Le délitement de son unité se révèle dans son entier à travers la non-reconnaissance de soi et l’effacement du corps. Le personnage n’est plus alors considéré comme une individualité, mais comme une figure afin de rendre compte de son pouvoir de fascination. / This study aims at analyzing the way the character’s presence in the portuguese novel of the last thirty years depends on the interweaving of representational data and their disfigurement. The character echoes back of the economic, political and societal turnovers provoked by the fall of the dictatorship. Thus, it appears as an effective fabric that questions the former models and elaborates new ones. Therefore, the character seems to propose several representations of the human being, relative to each of the studied authors. In one hand, some novels attempt to the impossibility of a stable identity representation and the disfigurement it failure provokes. In other hand, the texts also depict the possibility of a figure underlaid by its variety and its scattering. The indications of this ambivalence appear from the textual level where the disfigurement of the narrative by the disqualification of the action, the disorder of the hierarchies between characters, and the border’s fading between texts, author and character contributes to express the variety of character’s representation. Therefore, this one tends to create a person-effect set up by the text and which assimilates the character to a recognizable and knowable individual, in spite of the crisis which can threaten it. The the character’ interiority is nevertheless assailed by the perception of an impossible world which unstable marks shape an hostile and uninhabitable environment. Consequently, the disintegration of the character’s unity arises through the non-recognition of himself and the disappearance of the body. The character is not then considered any more as an individual, but as a figure that exerts a fascination’s power on the reader.
