Cette thèse a pour but de faire reconnaitre Ernesto Gimenez Caballero comme écrivain avant-gardiste. Sa présence et son dynamisme au sein de la communauté intellectuelle espagnole font qu'il est reconnu par ses contemporains en tant que personnalité importante dans les années '20. Bien que tous ses écrits et ses autres réalisations soient intimement reliés à la diffusion de la "modernité," cet écrivain de l'Avant-garde a été relégué aux oubliettes à cause de ses affiliations politiques dans les années 30. Je suis de l'avis que le fait qu'il se soit prononcé en faveur du régime franquiste ne devrait nullement oblitérer son oeuvre littéraire antérieure à 1930. L'objectif premier de ce travail est donc de démontrer qu'il a joué un rôle prépondérant pendant la deuxième décennie de notre siècle, et ce, non seulement en tant que promoteur des différents mouvements avant-gardiste, mais aussi en qualité d'écrivain. Les deux grandes influences qui ressortent de l'analyse des affiches littéraires sont le futurisme et le dadaïsme. Le dernier chapitre est consacré aux textes créatifs de Gimenez Caballero. On retrouve dans ses écrits les diverses caractéristiques des mouvements avant-gardistes des premières décennies de notre siècle. Les textes sont tirés de Yo, inspector de alcantarillas et Julepe de menta. La conclusion vise à redonner à Gimenez Caballero une place de choix au sein de la littérature d'Avant-garde espagnole des années '20. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

This M.A. thesis presents a modernized edition of the play El acierto en el engano y robador de su honra, written in the 17th century by Luis de Belmonte Bermudez. The play is extant in the MS. 15009 of the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid and has not been previously edited. The Thesis contains an introduction, in which the most relevant problems of the edition are discussed, including, for example, the fact that the MS. was greatly censored. The text is on occasions difficult to read and presents some problems when deciding which parts should be included and which excluded. Three different scribes can be distinguished and the study of their handwriting and work is one of the most outstanding problems of this edition. The second part of the Thesis consists of the actual edition of the play. The punctuation and the orthography have been modernized, except in those cases where the phonetics of the text could be affected. The third part contains philological and paleographical annotations, intended to clarify different aspects of the MS. and obscure passages. The philological notes attempt to elucidate the meaning of cultured references, ambiguous sentences, ... and try to shed light on some grammatical aspects of the language of the text.

Benjamin Jarnes, the author of El profesor inutil, is one of the more renowned experimental novelists of the Spanish vanguard of the 1920's. This thesis not only examines his place within the vanguard but also, through the analysis of his novel El profesor inutil demonstrates that his novels are a continuation of the narrative experimentation initiated by the Generation of 98 and the Modernists. El profesor inutil is both the first and last novel that Jarnes wrote, the first version having been published in 1926, the second in 1934. I have used the 1934 edition because it is an expanded version of the original and a more mature work. Jarnes' novels have been characterized as being about nothing but, as I show in this thesis, his novels, specifically El profesor inutil is about something: it is about itself, about art and the art of novel writing. It is essentially a metafictional work. There are many overt references to the art of the novel, of narration, but it is the covert ones that demonstrate his novelistic talent. Through retelling, reconfiguring and parodying mythic and literary stories and characters, the narrator constantly reminds the reader of the artificial nature of fiction. It is not meant to be a faithful reflection of external reality; rather it creates a reality in its own right. The novel also plays with a highly intellectualized form of eroticism, trading in the art of deferment, always postponing the climax. Through the seductive play between the narrator and various women, the relationship between the reader and the text is explored. As a work of fiction, it must seduce the reader into reading it, and this is accomplished through the seductive art of narration. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

L'etude de la survivance de l'art oral traditionnel dans le roman negro-africain d'expression francaise, cas de Karim d'Ousmane Soce et des Soleils des independances d'Ahmadou Kourouma, aborde en trois chapitres les differents aspects importants suggeres implicitement par la formulation meme du sujet de cette these dans une perspective a la fois ethnologique, sociocritique et textuelle. Le premier chapitre, s'appuyant sur des donnees theoriques, circonscrit en la precisant et en l'integrant dans le contexte du milieu traditionnel negro-africain la notion de l'oralite a la fois comme litterature et comme art. Les autres points de ce chapitre determinent les criteres esthetiques et structurels de l'oralite comme art et presentent les deux univers imaginaires des romans choisis dans cette etude comme cadre de production ou de realisation de l'oralite. Le deuxieme chapitre releve des univers romanesques tous les enonces de la litterature orale, en analyse le contexte d'usage et les interprete au niveau syntagmatique selon la logique et les donnees representant les referents extratextuels. Deux tableaux a la fin de ce chapitre explicitent la correspondance entre la thematique de chaque roman et la valeur affirmative de differents enonces de la litterature orale utilises par l'auteur, eclairant ainsi la place de l'oralite dans les romans. Le troisieme chapitre degage des univers des romans les differentes caracteristiques de l'oralite en tant que techniques narratives, etablit le rapport fonctionnel entre ces dernieres et les thematiques ou les theses des romans tout en demontrant que ce choix narratif et structurel participe de la strategie discursive globale des auteurs pour le besoin des theses qu'ils soutiennent.
