Challenges in the Greenhouse Production of Rosmarinus officinalis L.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary) is popular as a culinary herb, landscape plant, and potted florist's crop. Little research has been reported on the greenhouse production of this plant. Effects of irrigation rate, fertilizer concentration, and growing media on root and shoot growth were investigated for R. officinalis 'Athens Blue Spires'. In the first experiment, rooted cuttings were potted and received fertilizer treatments of 100, 200, or 300 mg?L-1 nitrogen (N) from 15N-2.2P-12.2K water-soluble fertilizer for twelve weeks. Two irrigation regimes were imposed - plants were irrigated with fertilizer solution when the growing media dried down to less than 30% or 20% volumetric soil moisture content. Root and shoot dry weights showed irrigation rate did not effect roots, but the higher irrigation rate produced larger shoots at all fertilizer concentrations. The largest roots and shoots were a product of the lowest fertilizer concentration. In the second experiment, rooted cuttings of the same cultivar were potted and received fertilizer treatments of 50, 100, 150, or 200 mg?L-1 N from 15N-2.2P-12.2K water-soluble fertilizer for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks. Plants were harvested at the end of each treatment. A third irrigation regime was imposed - plants were irrigated with fertilizer solution when the growing media dried down to less than 40%, 30%, or 20% volumetric soil moisture content. Root and shoot dry weights showed neither irrigation nor fertilizer were significant at week two, six, or eight. Dry weights showed irrigation was significant for roots at week four with the lowest irrigation rate producing the largest roots at all fertilizer concentrations except 100 mg?L-1 at the less than 30% irrigation rate. Irrigation was also significant at week four for shoots with the lowest irrigation rate producing the largest shoots at all fertilizer concentrations except 100 mg?L-1 at the less than 30% irrigation rate. In the third experiment 'Athens Blue Spires' rooted cuttings were potted in five different soilless media [Fafard 52 (24% peat, 60% bark, 8% perlite, 8% vermiculite); Fafard 3B (45% peat, 25% bark, 15% perlite, 15% vermiculite); Scott's Sierra Perennial Mix (25% peat, 65% bark, 10% perlite); Scott's Metro Mix 700 with Coir (25% coir, 50% bark, 10% perlite, 15% vermiculite); and a nursery mix (89% pine bark, 11% sand)]. Plants were irrigated for fourteen weeks with 150 mg?L-1N fertilizer solution when the growing media dried down to less than 30% or <20% volumetric soil moisture content. Growing media affected shoot dry weight with the highest-percentage peat media (Fafard 3B) producing the largest plants. All were of marketable quality. Irrigation rate did not affect root dry weight, but the higher rate produced larger shoots in each of the five media. The fourth experiment examined the growth of R. officinalis 'Tuscan Blue' rooted cuttings when planted in five different growing media [Fafard 52, Fafard 3B, Scott's Perennial, Metro Mix 560 with coir (30% coir, 15% peat, 40% bark, and 15% perlite), and 100% pine bark]. A third irrigation regime was imposed - plants were irrigated with 150 mg?L-1N fertilizer solution when the growing media dried down to less than 40%, 30%, or 20% volumetric soil moisture content. Treatments lasted for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks and plants were harvested at the end of each treatment. Dry weights showed neither media nor irrigation was significant for roots or shoots at weeks four or eight. However, at week two, media significantly affected root dry weight with the heaviest roots produced by the two perennial mixes (Scott's perennial and Fafard 52). Growing media affected shoot dry weight at week six with the highest-percentage peat media (Fafard 3B) producing the largest plants at the low and high irrigation rate. Irrigation also affected root dry weight at week six with the two lowest irrigation rates producing the heaviest roots in all media. / Master of Science

This thesis focuses on the experiences of the ‘disorderly’ neighbourhood of Rosemary Lane and Rag Fair in the eastern suburbs of London in c.1690 to 1765. Rosemary Lane and Rag Fair possessed one of the most powerfully articulated reputations for disorder of any London street. In the imagination of both novelists and social investigators it was thought to be squalid, dangerous, dirty - the stereotypical ‘den of iniquity’. Using a wide range of material including parish records, Middlesex session papers, eighteenth century newspapers, and digital sources such as the Old Bailey On-Line and London Lives this thesis will explore the streets and alleyways of Rag Fair. It will go beyond the simple perception of a disorderly neighbourhood, to describe the individual communities and forces which created that disorder. It will show that the poor of Rosemary Lane, generally, did not see themselves as a problem waiting to be solved, they were resourceful and they had their own way of surviving - they were active players in a changing City that was shaking off its medieval roots and embracing the modern. By looking in detail at this community; at its structures and divisions, and at its power relations, its self-identity will be revealed.

The concept of freedom in the work of Rosemary Radford Ruether

Freedom is a central concept in contemporary theology. However, what freedom means is blurred and unclear. To try to understand more precisely, the thought of a theologian who stands at the mid-point of the debate has been studied. Rosemary Ruether is a modern feminist theologian who has considered Christian origins and the human quest of liberation in detail as well as in considerable breadth, touching upon a wide variety of concerns that contribute to her concept of freedom. In Ruether's work certain key themes emerge. She stresses the ideas of creation (as a continuum that includes redemption and new creation), gnostic and apocalyptic dualism, ecclesiology, eschatology, and christology. From these preoccupations arises Ruether's understanding of freedom as wholeness, mutuality, struggle towards the future, and participation in the people of the promise. For Ruether, freedom means salvation in the biblical and Hebraic sense. Although the theology of the women's movement covers a broad spectrum, Ruether's concept of freedom is consistent with that of most other feminist theologians. The feminist concept of freedom, as expressed by Ruether, has much in common with the socio-political liberation theology of Gustavo Gutierrez. Like Latin American theology, Ruether's theology is biased towards the oppressed; it is based on a corporate understanding of faith, and it proposes a new way of doing theology which arises out of the context. But Ruether does not regard Marxist analysis as sufficient, and sees the limitations of apocalyptic tendencies in liberation theology. In ways, Ruether's theology is less dependent on traditional approaches than that of Gutierrez. The self-actualisation psychology of Abraham Maslow also has a number of resemblances to Ruether's feminist idea of freedom: both emphasize wholeness, humanism, mutuality, transcendence, utopian hope, and struggle. But Ruether's theology of freedom is not merely an adaptation of Maslovian psychology, since they differ on their commitment to the poor, on theism and organised religion, and on Maslow's emphasis on the individual. The concept of freedom held by Rosemary Ruether (and by many other feminist theologians) has much in common both with the liberation theology of the poor world and with the approach to freedom through personal fulfilment that is characteristic of affluent culture. Ruether is correct in saying that woman's growing awareness stands at the intersection between the freedom movements of the first and third worlds. But Ruether's freedom is not merely a combination of the two, but a unique contribution to modern theology. Despite some limitations, Ruether has contributed significantly to the theological quest for the meaning of freedom and can be expected to continue to do so.

Refrigerated and Frozen Shelf-Life of Fresh Pork Sausage after the Addition of Antioxidants

Fresh pork sausages were prepared from prerigor meat with synthetic antioxidants and combinations of Rosemary (R: 1500, 2000, 2500 ppm) and Green tea (G: 100, 200, 300 ppm) extracts. Experimental controls contained synthetic antioxidants only. A randomized complete block design with a factorial arrangement involving ten treatment combinations, three frozen storage periods (0.5, 3, 6 mos) and four retail display times (0, 7, 14, 21 d) was utilized. Secondary lipid oxidation products were reduced (P < 0.05) in treatments with higher amounts of R compared with the control across all frozen storage periods. Higher concentrations of both plant extracts led to increased (P < 0.05)CIE a* (redness) andCIE b* (yellowness) and decreased (P < 0.05) CIE L* (lightness) up to 6 mos of storage. Higher concentrations of R enhanced chroma and delayed discoloration throughout 14 d of retail display after 3 and 6 mos of storage. Combinations of R2500+G100 inhibited (P < 0.05) microbial growth compared with the control throughout retail display. Higher levels of R and G showed higher (P < 0.05) concentrations of spice-derived terpenes alpha-pinene, camphene, and isopulegol up to 3 mos of storage. Incorporation of R resulted in lower (P < 0.05) concentrations of lipid or microbial degradation products 2,4-decadienal, 2-butanone, and methanethiol following 3 mos of storage. Higher levels of G showed lower (P < 0.05) concentrations for 3-methyl-1-butanol and methyl isovalerate after 6 mos of storage. Natural plant extract addition led to higher (P < 0.05) consumer acceptability scores and were liked by >80% of the respondents across all frozen storage periods. The control displayed spoilage and detectable rancidity by day 7 following 6 mos of storage. Pork, nutmeg, ginger, and spice complex aromas were higher (P < 0.05) in sausages with increased concentrations of R following 0.5 and 3 mos of storage. Caramelized aroma followed a similar trend for treatments with a higher G content. Ginger, copper-herbal, rancid, offlavor and off-odor descriptors which were lower (P < 0.05) in sausages containing increased G concentrations. The use of R2500+G300 improved quality over time when the product was stored frozen for 6 mos.
