Design of Linkage-Type Rowing Exercise Machines

Rowing exercise machines are the popular fitness goods with training the whole body, warm-up, and stretching. They have the advantages of promoting cardiopulmonary function, training muscles, and burning calories. The purpose of this work is to develop a systematic design procedure for the linkage-type rowing exercise machines. First, to investigate and discuss the rowing exercise machines and the rowing motion to induce the requirements and design tasks of rowing exercise machines. Then the design targets of this research are decided further in order to establish the design specification. Second, to carry out the creative design of rowing exercise machines by using the procedure of creative mechanism design. Third, to complete the kinematic design of rowing exercise machines. Computer software is utilized for the work of dimensional synthesis and kinematic analysis. Finally, to perform the embodiment design and to establish 3-D model drawing of the design solutions.

Cognitive pain coping strategies of rowers

This study investigated rowers' cognitive pain coping strategies during a 2,000 metre ergometer race. The concepts of association and dissociation were expanded upon by devising five thought categories: performance dissociation (PerfD), pain association (PaA), pain dissociation (PaD), psychological performance association (PsyA), and technical performance association (TechA). Sixteen rowers, five males and eleven females, between the ages of 19 and 27 years, rowed at maximum intensity for four race segments of 500 m, 1,000 m, and 2,000 m on separate occasions. A forty-one item Thoughts During Rowing Questionnaire was administered upon completion of each distance. Subjects' average thought category scores were analyzed by a 4 x 5 (Distance x Thought category) MANOVA. Results indicated significant (p $<$.005) effects for distance and thought category, and an interaction. Results suggest that while racing, rowers rarely dissociate from their performances. As pain awareness rises, rowers dissociate from pain and associate with the psychological or technical aspects of their performances.

Pre-cooling during steady-state rowing decreases physiological strain and enhances self-paced rowing performance in elite rowers

To determine the effects of torso cooling with ice (ICE) or water-perfused (WP) vests during rest and warm-up on subsequent 1500 m time trial rowing performance in the heat. Eight male rowers (23 ± 4 y) completed 3 sessions on an ergometer in an environmental chamber (38ºC, 47% RH) 1 week apart. Pre-cooling was applied during rest (45 min) and warm-up (30 min) in 2 trials using ICE or WP vests, but not in the control condition (CON). Rectal (Tre) and skin (Tsk) temperature, HR, RPE, thermal comfort (TC) and sensation (TS) were monitored throughout. HR, RPE or TS were not different between conditions. TC, Tre and Tsk were lower in WP and ICE than CON post warm-up (P<0.05). The reduction in strain was reflected by increased power output during the 1500 m time trial in ICE (11±1.2 %) and WP (9.6±1.1%) compared to CON (P<0.05). Pre-cooling with ICE or WP vests enhanced performance in a 1500 m rowing time trial and power output was higher from the onset.

The Effect of training for competitive rowing on cardiovascular condition as measured by the brachial pulse wave (Cameron Heartometer)

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of training for competitive rowing on cardiovascular condition as measured by the brachial pulse wave (Cameron Heartometer). Brachial pulse wave records were taken on fifteen male subjects (nine varsity and six freshmen rowers) every week over a ten week period. Measurements of fourteen variables were obtained from each individual brachial pulse wave record. The data for each subject consisted of 10 serial measurements for each of 14 brachial pulse wave variables. There were thus 14 variables for each of 15 subjects, giving 210 sets of variables in total. Each of these sets was tested for linearity of regression against number of days elapsed from the beginning of the ten weeks testing period to the time when the pulse wave record was made. As a means of determining relative cardiovascular condition of rowers during training, mean measurements for twelve brachial pulse wave variables of (a) varsity and (b) freshmen crew members were compared with corresponding mean measurements for four non-rowing athletic groups. The brachial pulse wave tracings obtained during the training period suggest that progressive changes in the variables studied were, on the whole, relatively small and unstable. The data suggest that heart rate - blood pressure measurements are fairly sensitive variables in reflecting the effects of training but other measurements of the brachial pulse wave are not. Comparison of the rower's measurements with those of other athletic groups showed that varsity rowers were superior in cardiovascular condition to freshmen rowers before during and after training and that both groups were in many respects superior in cardiovascular condition to other non-rowing athletic groups. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate
