Imagination in the Philosophy of Josiah Royce

Roche, Jennifer Lynn 01 December 2012 (has links)
That Josiah Royce's philosophy relies on imagination has been acknowledged, but there has not yet been scholarship behind what this argument consists of or implies, both for imagination and Roycean loyalty. This project works to examine how imagination works in Royce's philosophy and, in particular, the ethical system of loyalty, as imagination serves in the creation and perfection of loyalty. The first level of this explores Royce's psychological groundwork for imagination and how this works into the development of the self. From there, this project works with the connections of aesthetics and beauty to Roycean loyalty, with particular interest in how beauty aids in the self's choice of cause. The final level of this project is concerned with how imagination informs the community and how imagination aids in the development of loyalty to a lost cause and thus loyalty to loyalty.

Communal Agency in Josiah Royce

Jacobs, Matthew, Jacobs, Matthew January 2012 (has links)
On the common sense view, an agent is an individual. Communities are collections of individuals, but the community itself is not understood to possess a collective, unified agency. Nevertheless, this view stands at odds with frequent ascriptions of communal agency; e.g., "Oregonians are environmentally conscious," "The team played to win," "The LGBTQ community is pro-gay marriage." If we are to vindicate such ascriptions, we need a theory of the "reality of community," the thesis that under certain conditions, a community possesses a unified, collective agency. This work reconstructs Royce's theory of communal agency through his views of purposiveness and the use he makes of C.S. Peirce's "theory of interpretation." I argue that, for Royce, agency is purposiveness and purposiveness always bears the triadic structure of the process of interpretation. Thus, the process of interpretation entails agency whether at the level of the individual or at the level of the community. / 10000-01-01

Transformative Justice in Josiah Royce: Rethinking Atonement for the 21st Century

Grumberg, Ryan Justin 01 December 2018 (has links)
This project seeks to utilize the thought of Josiah Royce to address problems stemming from the contemporary American criminal justice system, with a specific focus on the process known as “ex-offender reentry.” Whereas most mainstream reentry efforts focus on the individual perpetrator in isolation from their relationship to the whole, e.g. in and through various self-help programs, I use Royce’s secularized and irreducibly interpersonal model of atonement to illustrate the ways in which (re)integrating “ex-offenders” requires effort not only on the part of the perpetrator themselves, but so too from the community at large. In so doing I rely heavily on Royce’s realism (i.e. anti-nominalism) concerning the nature of relations. I do so first by problematizing the self/other dichotomy in and through adopting Royce’s model of subjectivity, in which relations with others are at least partially internal, that is, constitutive of our own identities. Second, by using Royce’s affirmation of the reality of relations to show, insofar as criminal acts damage not only individuals but also interpersonal and communal relations, that these relations cannot be restored unilaterally. What is more, since relations between so-called offenders and their respective communities are often less than ideal prior to the criminal acts in question, I seek to develop the transformative element of Royce’s model of atonement, to the effect that communities might paradoxically be better off for having gone through processes of atonement than if no such need had arisen. It is regarding this point especially that I find Royce’s thought to be most obviously related to the contemporary transformative justice movement, which sees responses to criminal wrongdoing as an opportunity for communities to address inequities that not infrequently give rise thereto. Finally, I utilize Royce’s personalism and “doctrine of two levels” to argue that the notion of personal responsibility, while usually applied exclusively to individuals, is equally applicable to communities and institutions. In the end I argue that a genuine commitment to transformative justice not only calls for atonement, in Royce’s sense, as a response to individual acts of wrongdoing, but also as a response to the forms of collective wrongdoing that have created circumstances in which the reentry phenomenon so disproportionately impacts largely urban, minority communities.

Royce and Perry on Idealism and Realism

Hudgins, Charles G. 13 January 2000 (has links)
This thesis is primarily an attempt to reconstruct the debate between Josiah Royce and Ralph Barton Perry concerning the viability of both the realist and idealist positions. Secondarily, I will show that this debate is a crucial part of an adequate understanding of the changes that took place in American philosophy in the early part of twentieth century. Royce's arguments against the neorealist position of Perry (and others) centered on both the nature of error, and the nature of independence. Perry' response to these arguments was an elaborate effort to demonstrate a coherent and consistent neorealist system which avoided the problems that Royce claimed must beset any such system. I will not attempt to assign the label of "winner" to either participant, however, I will show that the degree of incommensurability involved in the debate played an important role in the shift in American philosophy at the time. / Master of Arts

Konstruktion av infästning till dysa / Design of attachment for duct

Lie Gustavsson, Victor January 2014 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to design an attachment between a duct and a pod. A pod is what could be compared to an outboard engine for larger vessels. The pod is placed on the outside of the ship’s hull and can rotate 360 ̊. A duct is a large steel ring that can be placed around the propeller on the pod to increasethe propulsion force of the ship in lower velocities. The thesis is written for Rolls Royce AB in Kristinehamn. The demanded requirements of the design are: it must be easy to adapt to different sizes and shapes of pod houses, the duct must be able to bemounted and dismounted from the pod.The result from this thesis is that anupper and a lower attachment weredesigned. The upper attachment consists of two parallel steel plates which arebolted together with a screw plate that is welded to the pod house. The lower attachment is basically a wing with a streamlined profile which is bolted to a stay. Both attachments consist of bolted joints, two guide pins and bursting screws. The design is controlled by parameters in CAD, meaning that if you change the size of the duct the attachments automatically adapts themselves to the new dimensions. The total result from this thesis is a design suggestion and not an actual manufactured product. The design is dimensioned by a load analysis and strength calculations. The dimensions of the bolts are determined by basic load calculation and the guide pins aredimensioned to withstand the shear forces that occur. The conclusion of this thesis is that the developed attachment solution is a good way to solve this problem andthe personal recommendation is that it should be developed further.Further design work that needs to be done with the attachment is a more thorough analysis of the strength and especially with fatigue, since no account has been taken considering fatigue.

RR PLC Application Code : a Benchmark Study

Kihlström, Andreas, Weivert, Joakim January 2009 (has links)
This degree thesis is performed at Rolls-Royce at the Control Systems division. The assignment is to compare two different PLC development tools and determine how a transition toa new PLC development tool would be. The programs that will be compared is the current toolAutoCAD with the extension ACG and CoDeSys. A transition from AutoCAD to CoDeSys is realizable but will take considerable time and effort. Theeasiest way to achieve this is to during the transition generate an export file from the existing drawingsin AutoCAD which then can be imported to CoDeSys. By this CoDeSys can be used as a platform fordeveloping. This is fully realizable because ACG which generates the C code can be modified togenerate almost any export file.
