Developing and Administering a Nonmetropolitan Teachers Education Program in Northeastern Thailand

Naowarath Yamsaengsung 12 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of the rural teachers preparation program in specific curriculum components, field experience and training, and preparation. A secondary purpose is to determine the need for these components and a limited evaluation of other delivery systems for rural teaching in eight nonmetropolitan teachers colleges in Northeast Thailand. The questionnaire of the Rural Education Association (REA) developed by Barbara Jean Jones was employed to collect data from a random sampling of 352 teachers college instructors and administrators and randomly selected 352 elementary school teachers and administrators. Analysis of data from 508 respondents, were analyzed by using the descriptive statistic and t-test, revealed that: (a) the REA model components were available and are essential for teachers preparation program at Thai teachers colleges in the Northeast, (b) public relations and educational technology including computer literacy components should be developed to meet the public need, (c) teachers college faculty members should receive special training for preparing students to teach in a rural environment, (d) teachers colleges should provide a teacher training site in the provinces, (e) teaching in a rural and an urban environment are significantly different, and (f) there is a need for a special preservice training for teaching in a rural environment.

Color-Blind and Color-Conscious Racial Ideologies among White Teachers in Urban, Suburban, and Rural Areas

Whiting, Ross January 2016 (has links)
This study examined the differences in teacher racial ideology among white teachers in urban, suburban, and rural areas. This study advances the scholarship on the ideological frames used by teachers in urban, suburban, and rural areas through an examination of the differences in teachers’ discourse and racial ideology. Using contact theory, this study employed interviews to examine teachers’ discourse related to racial inequality in education to determine whether there were similarities in teacher discourse within and across urban, suburban, and rural areas with differing racial compositions. Interviews were conducted with 42 teachers in urban, suburban, and rural school districts during the 2014-2015 school year. There were three major findings in this study. First, four original frames of color-conscious racial ideology were present in data across urban, suburban, and rural areas. Second, teachers across all areas employ the systemic responsibility frame to talk about the achievement gap, and the cultural racism frame to talk about increased violence in urban areas, revealing that teachers frame some topics similarly across areas of differing racial composition. Third, analysis of teacher racial ideologies using the eight frames of color-conscious and color-blind racial ideology reveal that teachers within Lincoln City, Gresham, and Arcadia employ specific frames within each area to talk about racial inequality in education. Further, teachers in Lincoln City and Gresham framed racial inequality in education more consistently using color-conscious frames than teachers in Arcadia, indicating that contact with outgroup members also shapes teacher racial ideology. / Urban Education

NARRATIVAS (AUTO)BIOGRÁFICAS: A MEDIAÇÃO DA LITERATURA INFANTIL NAS TRAJETÓRIAS FORMATIVAS DE UMA PROFESSORA DE CLASSE MULTISSERIADA / (AUTO) BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE: MEDIATION OF LITERATURE ON CHILD PATHS FORMATION OF A MULTISSERIATE CLASS TEACHER

Dolwitsch, Julia Bolssoni 19 March 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This paper presents the results of a research Master of Education linked to the Research Line "Training, Professional Development and Knowledge" (LP1) of Post-Graduate in Education of Federal University of Santa Maria. The main objective of this study was to understand, through (auto)biographical research, such as children's literature influenced the formative paths of a multisseriate literacy class that acted as tutor in Pro-Literacy Program. The justification of the relevance of this study is based from the little discussion about the role of children's literature and its mediations in educational trajectories of rural educators, as well as the indispensable role that reading, in particular, the literary reading plays in shaping teachers. Activation of memory, through the memories, found a formative path, traversing memories in relation to memories of childhood, school, training courses and professional collaborative research and personal trajectories. The methodology used was based on a qualitative study through (auto)biographical research, using the Biographical History of Life method. The analysis of the information was based by the use of written autobiographical account and organized narrative interview from topics guide. To support the writing of this dissertation, I used as theoretical support, studies of Abrahão (2004, 2006), Antunes (2010, 2011, 2014), Arroyo; Fernandes (1999), Barcelos (2009), Bauer; Gaskell (2011), Bolzan (2002), Fernandes (2011), Freire (2011), Josso (2004), Nóvoa (2000, 2009), Souza (2006, 2012), and others. Throughout the research process, from the exchange of experiences, conversations throughout the research and analysis of information, were emerging categories of analysis that were structured as: childhood, memories of school, formative processes in the rural context and professional trajectory. From the narratives, I found that the Pro-Literacy through intensive work with children's literature, became a mediator of the training trajectories of collaborative research, making (re) emerging practices and actions that were already asleep in their formation process. Thus, I realized throughout the narrative interview with the cooperating teacher research, that reflection on the history of life enabled the development of a teaching job with greater theoretical consistency and at the same time, spurred the creation of shared spaces construction of knowledge among teachers who took the course.

Rural Teacher Satisfaction: An Analysis Of Beliefsand Attitudes Of Rural Teachers' Job Satisfaction

Huysman, John 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to understand the beliefs and attitudes of teachers that affect their perceptions of job satisfaction in one small rural Florida school district. Data collected included a self-administered survey of Likert-type items measuring 20 factors for job satisfaction (96% response rate), individual semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Analysis of the data confirmed prior research suggesting that multiple factors influence job satisfaction. Intrinsic satisfaction factors were the best predictors of overall job satisfaction: security, activity, social service, variety, and ability utilization. Extrinsic factors were most likely to predict overall dissatisfaction: recognition, company policies, opportunities for advancement, co-workers, and compensation. Interviews and focus groups further confirmed how participants projected personal significance onto these factors and how they interacted. The complexity of these interactions stemmed from personal perceptions and values participants placed on individual extrinsic factors and linked those values to other extrinsic factors. Consequently, other extrinsic factors took on perceptions of dissatisfaction based on the original factor. In addition, this research revealed several issues not previously reported in studies of rural teaching. First, "role confusion" emerged as a major source of job dissatisfaction for teachers who were either raised in the community or who had spent a considerable number of years in the community. These teachers often found themselves frustrated at work because of conflicting expectations and perceptions between their professional roles as teachers and their social roles in the community. Second, a high majority of teachers interviewed expressed dissatisfaction because they believed other teachers to have undue influence and power. However, interview data suggested that power was distributed properly but pervasive informal decision making processes led to the widespread perception of favoritism. In addition, teachers often exercised influence because no one opposed them. This study suggests that research to gain a better understanding of the sociology of rural communities needs to be conducted in rural education generally and specifically in rural teacher job satisfaction. Rural teachers' job satisfaction is complexly intertwined with a wide range of factors. Suggested uses for this study include an invitation for rural administrators and teachers to incorporate issues related to job satisfaction into their school improvement and professional development strategies. Addressing the factors influencing rural teacher job satisfaction, which have been previously overlooked, affords rural administrators a new opportunity to positively influence teacher retention, teacher quality, student achievement, and school climate.

This study approach around multigrade classes teachers memories, building history of rural education (1940-2009), at the region of Lomba Grande, the city of New Hamburg/ RS/Brazil. Memories are analyzed from the social time Halbwachs perspective: when memory allows individuals to take his place in the network of social relations inscribed within the social practice, is crucial to understanding the practice of a group. The research was qualitative, with the methodology of oral history, by semi-structured interviews, and also documentary analysis from written documents (official documents, laws, decrees, images and other printed and manuscripts documents), founded along the course of investigation. Under the frame of Cultural History, the analysis is structured in two dimensions: teaching formations memories and the teaching practices memories. Thus, from the trajectories of this group of teachers, complemented by other empirical data, its possible to understand a significant route of the history of rural local public education, there being three distinct phases: the first time, when processing the constitution of Isolated Schools and a second phase, characterized as the consolidation of Lomba Grande public school, and the third, regarded here as the phase of restructuring rural public school in that place. The formations memories allowed visualize the single master representation atteaching students time. On the other hand, teaching practices memories brings up strategies built by the teachers for their own education, creating forms to qualify the multigrade classes work.

The results of research of Master’s Degree in Education are presented with the general objective of analyzing aspects of the teaching profession in the rural area of the state of São Paulo, specifically in the municipality of Rio Claro, focusing on initial training, entry into the teaching career, educational practices, in-service training, working conditions and the relationship with the rural area, from 1950 to 1992. Through historical approach and oral history methodology, are used as documentary corpus the Statistical Yearbooks (of Brazil and the state of São Paulo); the state and municipal legislation that regulates education and the teaching profession; the Integrated Master Plan of the Municipality of Rio Claro (1972); interviews with five rural teachers. The temporal delimitation was based on the trajectory of the teachers interviewed. The year 1950 marked the beginning of the career of Mariquinha, a teacher with more time in the profession, and the year 1992 delimited the moment in which the teachers Amelia and Josefina stopped teaching in rural schools as they underwent the process of restructuring and grouping implemented by State Decree n. 29,499 / 1989. The results indicate that the initial training and in-service were of a general nature, with no specifications for agricultural activities and the level of training of rural school teachers in the state of São Paulo was high, and these teachers had specialization courses, further training course and degree in Pedagogy. The entry into the career was mainly through the contests of titles and later the contests of exams and titles. Among the educational practices, we highlight the cultivation of the school garden, the use of textbooks and the organization of classes in rows of year/ series. Working conditions were mainly related to the physical and material conditions of schools, housing and transportation. Finally, through the reports of experiences and strong memories of the teachers in the rural schools, the dissertation evidences the relation between them and the rural area.

This study analyzes the psychometric structure of the CAPE- R scale, which assesses the beliefs about the educational process in rural teachers; explores the teacher´s profile, and analyzes the significant differences between the beliefs according to sociodemographic variables. The sample included 150 rural teachers from Mendoza, Argentina. The exploratory factor analysis yielded a factorial structure made up of four factors that explained a 44.19% of the variance of responses to the test. Internal consistency coefficients ranged from .74 to .85. The data show a predominance of difficulties in the educational process dimension (M=2.83; DE=.69), the only dimension that reached a significant association with the educational level of the classes (F =4.77, p<.05).
