Associations between the Sleep of Children with ADHD and their Mothers

Thorne, Mary Elizabeth 11 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis research examines the relation of sleep of children with ADHD and its association with three variables of mother’s sleep. Specifically, we examine specific variables of child sleep including sleep duration, sleep onset, and nightwakings and its relation to mother’s sleep onset, sleep duration, and sleep quality while controlling for child age. After conducting correlations and hierarchal regressions, data analysis indicated a positive association between child sleep onset and mother’s sleep onset, and significant negative relation to mother’s sleep duration and sleep quality. Contrary to expectations, children’s sleep duration and nightwakings were not associated with any of the mother’s sleep variables. After delineating associations between sleep of children with ADHD and their mothers, we provided research implications and in order to promote sleep in this population.

Dual Effects Model of Social Control: Extending the Model to 24-Hour Health Behavior

Mead, Michael P. January 2017 (has links)
The Dual Effects Model of Social Control suggests that partners can positively and negatively influence the health behaviors of their partner. However, the model fails to consider the impact of control on non-targeted health behaviors, such as sleep. The current study sought to expand this model by including sleep continuity and duration as outcomes related to control efforts targeting diet and exercise. Partner control and objective sleep data were collected via daily sleep diaries and Fitbit Charge HR. Regression models were used to test the direct and indirect effects of control on sleep duration and continuity and the extent to which affective response mediates this relationship. Negative control had a significant effect on negative affect, but not on sleep continuity or duration. Positive control had a significant effect on positive affective response, but the full mediation model was not supported. Recommendations for future research using the proposed model are discussed.

Should Athletes Receive Sleep Hygiene Education? A Systematic Literature Review

Contreras, Ines L 01 January 2019 (has links)
Previous studies show the need to find a solution to improve the athlete's recovery and help overcome their sleep disorders. Sleep hygiene is a list of habits and recommendation that enhance sleep quality. Sleep hygiene education has been used in some research to fill the need of the athletes. Still, a lack of information exists on the development of sleep hygiene programs and related impacts. This thesis aims to perform a systematic review of the literature of scholarly journals articles from 2007 to 2018, focusing on the relationship between sleep hygiene education and athletes sleep quality and quantity. The investigation concluded with 16 qualifying articles. A synthesis of recommendations from all studies offered sleep hygiene suggestions for athletes; all the results are provided in table 12. The further overall conclusion of the selected articles settled that sleep hygiene is recommended for athletes, yet the methods and strategies are vague and not precise. A strong recommendation from this systematic literature review is the creation of a standardized list of sleep hygiene habits focused on athletes to improve their sleep quality and quantity.
