Studenters upplevelse av vad som påverkar studenters sömnvanor / Students perceptions of what affects students' sleep habits

Djupsjö, Sofia, Björneman, Anna, Ndot, Fabius January 2013 (has links)
Background: Mental illness is a public health problem that extends through all age groups. Mental illness is highest among young people aged 16-24 years where problems with sleep are part of mental well- being. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate students' perception of what affects sleep habits for higher studies. Method: Interviews were conducted with six students aged 20-30 years at a university in southwester Sweden. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then analyzed. Analytical method was a thematic analysis in which three themes emerged. Consideration was given to the ethical aspects as well as the informed consent of the participants. The data were treated confidentially. The study was done in collaboration with the Student Health Care. Results: The analysis revealed three themes: New procedures affect sleep, Stress and Performance affects sleep patterns and Healthy living. Factors that influence sleep habits among students were routine, sleep rhythm, schoolwork and stress and anxiety of not having performed enough. It was shown that physical activity, diet and regular routines had a stimulating effect in sleep habits. Implication: Mental health and sleep habits is something that needs to be shown even more in the future and further research could be more about health promotion. Future research should focus on factors that promote, rather than simply identifying the problem. With the results of this study, the Student Health Care need to work more with the issues of sleep habits and how they could best respond to students with questions about sleep. One example is to introduce compulsory lectures and seminars at universities in order to reach with health information.

Parenting Stress: Associations with Childhood Obesity Risk and Related Risk Behaviours

Walton, Kathryn 19 July 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the association between parenting stress and child body mass index (BMI). Behaviours known to increase childhood obesity risk were also examined in relation to parent stress: poor eating habits, increased television viewing, decreased physical activity and poor sleep habits. Cross-sectional, baseline data were collected from 110 parent-child dyads participating in a family-based obesity prevention intervention. The majority of participants identified as Hispanic/Latino and belonged to low-income households. Parents scored an average of 28.4 +/- 10.7 on the PSI-3-SF, classifying 20% as high stress. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts, 48% of children were categorized as overweight or obese. Parenting stress was not found to be associated with child weight status in this study. Parenting stress was, however, significantly associated with unhealthful behaviours that are associated with increased obesity risk. In comparison to children with unstressed parents, the children of highly stressed parents were less likely to meet the recommendation of 60 minutes spent in active play per day on weekdays. Highly stressed parents also were less likely to limit the amount of television their child viewed. While it is important to target activity and television behaviours among young children, our results suggest that interventions may also need to address parental stress as a possible underlying factor associated with unhealthful behaviours among young children.

Should Athletes Receive Sleep Hygiene Education? A Systematic Literature Review

Contreras, Ines L 01 January 2019 (has links)
Previous studies show the need to find a solution to improve the athlete's recovery and help overcome their sleep disorders. Sleep hygiene is a list of habits and recommendation that enhance sleep quality. Sleep hygiene education has been used in some research to fill the need of the athletes. Still, a lack of information exists on the development of sleep hygiene programs and related impacts. This thesis aims to perform a systematic review of the literature of scholarly journals articles from 2007 to 2018, focusing on the relationship between sleep hygiene education and athletes sleep quality and quantity. The investigation concluded with 16 qualifying articles. A synthesis of recommendations from all studies offered sleep hygiene suggestions for athletes; all the results are provided in table 12. The further overall conclusion of the selected articles settled that sleep hygiene is recommended for athletes, yet the methods and strategies are vague and not precise. A strong recommendation from this systematic literature review is the creation of a standardized list of sleep hygiene habits focused on athletes to improve their sleep quality and quantity.

Poruchy nočního spánku u dětí / Somnipathy in children

MAŘÍKOVÁ, Linda January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation deals with night insomnia in children. With the growing number of complaints of parents about insomnia in particular in infants and toddlers, this problem becomes very topical and frequently discussed not only among parents themselves but also among the medical workers involved in the child care. No unambiguous cause of why some children sleep well and other children do not has been yet proven. However, experts dealing with these problems present an opinion in the literature that the main cause lies in the incorrect approach of parents to creating sleep habits in their children. They supplement their opinion by a set of recommendations how to avoid or possibly solve the problems by applying the appropriate approach. Our dissertation thus aims at ascertaining how parents' approach affects creating of incorrect sleep habits in infants and toddlers. The other objective consisted in subsequent drawing up of the nursing diagnosis and nursing care plan by means of which the nurses could independently solve the problems related to insomnia in children. A qualitative research based on the contingent valuation method has been carried out. The methods of data collection included the structured interview performed with two small sets of mothers of children. The first set comprised mothers of children with no sleep problems and the second set was composed of mother of children suffering from sleep problems. The prepared questions related in particular to children's sleep habits. Both sets were compared and the data were also subject to the Fisher's exact test. Although it was not possible to prove that inappropriate approach of parents to creating sleep habits in children is the unambiguous cause of the children's sleep problems, we believe that such inappropriate approach is a related factor. This assumption is supported also by the result of the other part of the research, a non-structured interview. This interview from which casuistry was subsequently created was performed by one of the mothers whose child had suffered from sleep problems. The said mother was willing to try to implement the recommended measures and she subsequently described to us how her son's sleep problems attenuated significantly. On the basis of our hypothesis that creation of correct sleep habits might help children suffering from insomnia, despite the fact that no direct relation between the sleep habits of children and their sleep problems has been proven, as the output of this dissertation we have drawn up the above mentioned nursing diagnosis and nursing care plan which could help the nurses independently solve the children's sleep problems. We also believe that it would be appropriate to carry out research in the future dealing with direct evaluation of success or failure of the recommended measures in solving insomnia in infants and toddlers.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Renata Soifer.pdf: 290445 bytes, checksum: cee39083cf0db7050f61e6be666f5b5b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-08-07 / This study aims to review the possibilities to apply a technique that may modify sleep habits among children with difficulty to sleep. It is an investigative study of relationship mother-baby. The bibliography compiled has suggested that the mother or the individual taking on the mother´s role has a key role in the process of falling asleep and maintaining baby´s sleep. Simultaneously, having a good and restful night sleep was something much valued and attempted by the parents. By applying the technique of change of sleep habits, which has been developed by the author, this study analyses three pairs of mother-baby basing its findings on the Jungian theory. The objective of the study has been achieved since the technique has proved to be efficient when stipulating different intervals of waiting time, according to psychological resources characterized by each phase of the human development. By providing an exclusive time for the mother-baby interaction through giving the baby a body massage, the baby was offered different experiences, both of primary bond and separation / O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar as possibilidades da aplicação de técnica de modificação dos hábitos de sono, em crianças com dificuldade para dormir, em um estudo investigativo da relação mãe-filho.

Indicators and predictors of sleepiness

van den Berg, Johannes January 2006 (has links)
Sleep is a basic need as important as physical fitness and good nutrition. Without enough sleep, we will create a sleep debt and experience sleepiness. Sleepiness can be defined as the inability to stay awake, a condition that has become a health problem in our 24-hour-7-day-a-week society. Estimates suggest that up to one-third of the population suffers from excessive sleepiness. Among other interactions, sleepiness affects our performance, increasing the risk of being involved in accidents. A considerable portion of work related accidents and injuries are related to sleepiness resulting in large costs for the individuals and society. Professional drivers are one example of workers who are at risk of sleepiness related accidents. Up to 40% of heavy truck accidents could be related to sleepiness. A better knowledge about reliable indicators and predictors of sleepiness is important in preventing sleepiness related accidents. This thesis investigates both objective and subjective indicators of sleepiness, how these relate to each other, and how their pattern changes over time. The indicators investigated were electroencephalography, heart rate variability, simple reaction time, head movement, and subjective ratings of sleepiness (Study I-IV). In Study V, a questionnaire study was conducted with professional drivers in northern Sweden. This study mainly deals with predictors of sleepiness. When subjects were sleep deprived both objective and subjective ratings indicated a rapid increase in sleepiness during the first hour of the test followed by a levelling off. This change in pattern was evident for all the indicators except heart rate and heart rate variability. On the other hand, HRV was correlated with the increase of EEG parameters during the post-test sleep period. The changes in pattern of the indicators included in the thesis are analysed in the perspective of temporal patterns and relationships. Of the tested indicators, a subjective rating of sleepiness with CR-10 was considered to be the most reliable indicator of sleepiness. Of the investigated predictors of sleepiness, prior sleep habits were found to be strongly associated to sleepiness and the sleepiness related symptoms while driving. The influences of driving conditions and individual characteristics on sleepiness while driving were lower. A multidisciplinary approach when investigating and implementing indicators and predictors of sleepiness is important. In addition to their actual relations to the development of sleepiness, factors such as technical and practical limitations, work, and individual and situational needs must be taken into account.
