A Campus Situational Awareness and Emergency Response Management System Architecture

Chigani, Amine 29 April 2011 (has links)
The history of university, college, and high school campuses is eventful with man-made tragedies ensuing a tremendous loss of life. Virginia Tech's April 16 shooting ignited the discussion about balancing openness and safety in open campus environments. Existing campus safety solutions are characterized by addressing bits and pieces of the problem. The perfect example is the recent influx in demand for Electronic Notification Systems (ENS) by many educational institutions following the tragedies at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University. Installing such systems is important, as it is an essential part of an overall solution. However, without a comprehensive, innovative understanding of the requirements for an institution-wide solution that enables effective security control and efficient emergency response, the proposed solutions will always fall short. This dissertation describes an architecture for SINERGY (campuS sItuational awareNess and Emergency Response manaGement sYstem) – a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based network-centric system of systems that provides a comprehensive, institution-wide, software-based solution for balancing safety and openness on any campus environment. SINERGY architecture addresses three main capabilities: Situational awareness (SA), security control (SC), and emergency response management (ERM). A safe and open campus environment can be realized through the development of a network-centric system that enables the creation of a COP of the campus environment shared by all campus entities. Having a COP of what goes on campus at any point in time is key to enabling effective SC measures to be put in place. Finally, common SA and effective SC lay the foundation for an efficient and successful ERM in the case of a man-made tragedy. Because this research employs service orientation principles to architect SINERGY, this dissertation also addresses a critical area of research with regards to SOA; that area is SOA security. Security has become a critical concern when it comes to SOA-based network-centric systems of systems due the nature of business practices today, which emphasize dynamic sharing of information and services among independent partners. As a result, the line between internal and external organization networks and services has been blurred making it difficult to assess the security quality of SOA environments. In order to do this evaluation effectively, a hierarchy of security indicators is developed. The proposed hierarchy is incorporated in a well-established evaluation methodology to provide a structured approach for assessing the security of an SOA-based network-centric system of systems. Another area of focus in this dissertation is the architecting process. With the advent of potent network technology, software/system engineering has evolved from a traditional platform-centric focus into a network-centric paradigm where the “system of systems” perspective has been the norm. Under this paradigm, architecting has become a critical process in the life cycle of software/system engineering. The need for a structured description of the architecting process is undeniable. This dissertation fulfills that need and provides a structured description of the process of architecting a software-based network-centric system of systems. The architecting process is described using a set of goals that are specific to architecting, and the associated specific practices that enable the realization of these goals. The architecting process description presented herein is intended to guide the software/system architects. / Ph. D.

Um middleware para coreografias de serviços web escaláveis em ambientes de computação em nuvem / A middleware for scalable web services choreographies in the cloud

Mendonça, Thiago Furtado de 08 July 2015 (has links)
Service composition has been a hot topic that has attracted the interesting of researchers in the distributed system area. Moreover, the interesting in cloud computing based environment has grown significantly. Its use has grown and it became to be a important business model. Choreographies are an specific kind of service composition that has no single point of failure; the responsibility of execution is distributed among the services. Due to the distributed nature of the these systems, the fulfilment of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) depends strictly on and automatic way to monitoring Quality of Service (QoS) and virtual computional resources as well as dinamic reconfiguration mechanisms, to be capable of automatically adapting compositions to changing environment. In this work, we studied QoS management in service choreographies. In order, we devised a middleware system capable of deploy service compositions and manage QoS of them. The middleware was evaluated using the Amazon EC2 cloud provider. The results shows that with less effort from the composition providers, it is possible to fulfil SLAs using horizontal or vertical scalability provided by the middleware automatically. Additionaly, our proposal brings up a cost reduction of deploy by decreasing the amount of underused resources.

Modelos e algoritmos para composição de Web services com qualidade de serviço / Models and algorithms for Web services composition with quality of service

Kuehne, Bruno Tardiole 27 November 2009 (has links)
This work presents the modeling, the prototype and the results of the developing of a middleware for dynamic composition of Web Services named DWSC-M (Dynamic Web Service Composition Middleware). The main focus of this middleware is to allow services being dynamically composed, considering aspects of quality of service in the choice of services that are part of the composite flow. Complementing the operation of the DWSC-M middleware two algorithms were proposed for Web Services selection : the first one uses Random selection and the second one uses Euclidean Distance for the selection of services and considers for this purpose the QoS parameters sent by the client service request

Estudo e definição de uma linha de produtos de software para o desenvolvimento de aplicações educacionais móveis / Study and definition of a software product line for the development of mobile learning applications

Falvo Júnior, Venilton 07 April 2015 (has links)
The popularity of mobile devices in all social classes has motivated the development of mobile educational applications, called m-learning applications. The existing applications, even having many benefits and facilities in relation to teaching and learning, also have problems and challenges, especially regarding the development, reuse and architectural standardization. Particularly, there is an increasing adoption of the concept of Software Product Line (SPL) in researches related to reuse. This paradigm enables organizations to explore the similarities and variabilities of their products, increasing the reuse of artifacts and, consequently, reducing costs and development time. This work presents an SPL focused on the domain of m-learning applications, named M-SPLearning. The development of M-SPLearning has comprised since the initial study for an effective domain analysis until the implementation of the components previously analyzed. Such SPL had its products experimentally evaluated in the industrial scenario, providing evidences that its use can accelerate the time-to-market of m-learning applications, with a reduced number of faults.

Entwicklung eines Editors zum Entwurf von Benutzerschnittstellen für Web Services auf Basis der abstrakten UI-Beschreibungssprache WSGUI

Spillner, Josef 17 August 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Modèles partagés et infrastructures ouverte pour l'internet des objets de la ville Intelligente / Shared self-configuring models and software infrastructures for Smart City monitoring and control.

Lemke, Laurent 06 June 2017 (has links)
Nowadays cities face several challenges and are concerned by ecological, energetic, economical, and demographical aspects. Smart cities, equipped with sensors, actuators, and digital infrastructures, are meant to tackle these issues.Current smart cities are operated by several actors without sharing sensor data or accesses to the actuators. This is a vertical organization, in which each actor deploys its own sensors and actuators, and manages its own digital infrastructure. Each actor may be interested in a different aspect of city management, for instance traffic management, air control, etc. The current trend is a transition towards a more horizontal organization, based on an open and shared mediation platform. In such a platform, sensor data and accesses to actuators can be shared among several actors. The costs related to nfrastructure deployment and management are therefore reduced for each individual actor. This PhD is a contribution to this volution towards horizontal organizations, with open and shared platforms. We propose: (1) an abstraction layer for the ontrol and supervision of the city; (2) a concurrency management mechanism; (3) a coordination mechanism that helps haring actuators; (4) a proof-of-concept implementation of these contributions. The abstraction layer we propose helps users control and supervise a city. It is based upon formal models inspired by the ones used in the programming of reactive systems. They represent the physical elements present in each smart city, with genericity principles. In order to ease application development, the interface of those models is made uniform. Since applications, especially control ones, may ave real-time constraints, we also list the constraints this poses on distributed infrastructures. As soon as actuators are shared, conflicts may occur between users. Our proposals include a concurrency management mechanism, based on eservation principles. We also provide a coordination mechanism for the users to be able to perform several actions in an tomic way.All these principles have been implemented as a proof of concept. We review several use cases, to demonstrate he potential benefits of our proposals.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Johnneth de Sene Fonseca.pdf: 2018093 bytes, checksum: 11dbbd37120eed762761ac62a54985ab (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-02-16 / The constant evolution of technologies used in mobile devices has increased its capabilities with respect to its storage, processing and transmission of data, including more of one kind of technology transfer in a single device, and also access Internet more efficiently. These factors have a greater number of applications and services may be provided therein. With this came the need to find a model for developing services and making them available more quickly and efficient, and that data is transmitted more securely. One of the best options currently existing are the SOAS (Services Oriented Architecture) a development model in great evidence today. The aim of this dissertation is present a framework that allows the development of SOA in the mobile environment, giving the developer all the tools necessary for provision of services in this type of environment. A tool for the use of security mechanism for the Framework is also proposed.

SOA Governance

Pršala, Ondřej January 2008 (has links)
The thesis is focused on administration and supervision of Service oriented architecture (SOA). The main idea of SOA is system decomposition to functional units, which contain bounded and well understandable functionality. This functionality, in form of service, is provided to other units through clearly described interface. Well-identified relationships between service provider and service consumer are created. SOA governance aims to manage these relationships, to monitor quality of services and to control adherence of stated rules and policies. These rules and policies are established by central team responsible for integration and architecture development. Starting point of successful architecture development is acquaintance of service portfolio and their inter-relationships. Each service should go through whole formal life-cycle, which particular phases have special policies applied. Main interest is devoted to run-time phase - run-time monitoring and run-time governance. Theory is complemented by practical examples of report generation and service monitoring with SLA adherence observation. The thesis also contains structural model of SOA governance taking into account infrastructural elements of SOA and information flows between them.
