Abordagens e métodos orientados ao design social / Approaches and methods oriented to social design

Couto, Elisa Bonotto do January 2016 (has links)
Social design is a theme that the design literature talks from the 60s, but until today are theoretical and methodological gaps that affect professional practice and teaching of design, reducing their social impact. In this work the social design is understood as a larger area that includes the design of products and services and therefore has direct contribution to people’s well-being and quality of life, by solving social problems. The work is grounded on two groups of data: the social design approaches, gathered from bibliographic research; and the toolkits geared to the theme, gathered through documental research. From a systematic and integrating literature review of these groups, the study aims to gather and organize the knowledge of these areas in order to generate a theoretical framework to collaborate to encourage the research and education in this field, as well the professional practice, more suited to the reality of humanitarian, political and economic crises with which we live globally.

Exploring the use of speculative design as a participatory approach to more inclusive policy-identification and development in Malaysia

Tsekleves, E., Lee, C.A.L., Yong, Min Hooi, Lau, S.L. 23 June 2022 (has links)
Yes / This Case Study paper presents the first exploration of Speculative Design as a participatory democracy method for navigating the future of ageing in Malaysia. Speculative Design in the context of Global South is emerging, but without much data on how it is applied within different socio-economic conditions from the Global North countries. This Case Study considers the challenges and opportunities of employing Speculative Design as policy identification and development method from the context of Malaysia, a Global South country with its own unique characteristics. The paper concludes by suggesting that the novelty of Speculative Design as a policy-design approach in Global South countries, such as in Malaysia, requires the right selection of provocations and culturally familiar content to ease introduction of the methodology. Also, the efficacy of this approach as a participatory design application would require further enculturation within targeted communities, as well as sustained engagement through Champions. / This work was supported by the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council [grant number: AH/S005684/1].

How product design can facilitate parents to make more varied and norm breaking choices of toys and play

Carlzon, Oscar January 2021 (has links)
Gender norms are validated by parents from the birth of a child by choosing gender stereotypical toys according to societal norms which divide children among the biological sexes. This affects not only the child's self-image but also how others judge and treat the child. A number of studies show how stereotypical toys give children a narrow world view and their visions for the future, something that affects gender equality. Parents' emotional bond to gender stereotypical toys and the difficulties they face that result in them making stereotypical toy choices is what is missing in the literature. In this project it becomes apparent that parents wants to vary play, but encouraging this takes too much time which leads the parents to make stereotypical choices of toys and play primarily based on their child's own will. To exemplify a possible solution to this problem, a product was designed, that makes it easier for parents to vary and make norm-breaking play with their child's already existing toys. This study points out an important building block for an equal future society and how this can be more easily achieved through design.

Roadmap to a Circular Society - ein Co-Design-Prozess zur Gestaltung gesellschaftlicher Diskurs- und Möglichkeitsräume

Boch, Ralph, Hempel, Nadja, Hofmann, Florian, Jaeger-Erben, Melanie, Lersch, Barbara, Schlegel, Adrian 29 June 2022 (has links)

Se Busca : graphic design as a tool to shift attitudes about violence in Chihuahua

Cano, Mariana 07 October 2014 (has links)
Since 2006, the city of Chihuahua, Mexico has been engulfed in a wave of drug-related violence that has resulted in thousands of murders, kidnappings, and "disappearances." Because bloody headlines sell newspapers, violence dominates the mainstream media, which contributes to residents' sense of hopelessness and helplessness. In response, in my graduate work I have investigated ways in which I can use the persuasive tactics and appearance of mainstream commercial graphic design to effect social change: specifically, to shift Chihuahuans' attitudes about their city. Through three interventions (The Graffiti Workshop, the Riberas school identity, and the Se busca project), I have attempted to encourage civic participation, recognize positive contributions within the community, and build an economic engine around local heroes. By doing so, I hope to reverse the prevailing belief that individuals are powerless to confront large, complex social issues. In addition, I hope these projects demonstrate some of the ways in which graphic designers can effectively apply their design skills to social as well as commercial problems. / text

Kelman, Beatriz Chiavini Mendes de Carvalho 19 October 2012 (has links)
With this research project, that participates in the Master Program in Communication Sciences, in the III Area of Concentration - Social Interfaces of Communication from the Main Line of Research Policy and Strategies of Communication, we sought to identify and analyze the content of verbal and pictorial campaigns in the health education area, particularly about diabetes, present in the World Diabetes Day events or related to this, occurred in 2010 and 2011. These campaigns were carried out by public and private health institutions of the city of São Paulo with materials sponsored and/or distributed by pharmaceutical and food companies that used the design to organize the messages about disease prevention and/or adoption of healthy behaviors. The analysis of the contents of the printed pieces of the campaigns was based on theories of social communication and visual language.
