Challenges experienced by clergy in dealing with domestic violence

Petersen, Elizabeth January 2006 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This thesis sought to explore the challenges experienced by selected clergy within the Anglican Church in dealing with domestic violence. The sample was drawn from the Diocese of Cape Town of the church of the Province of Southern Africa, based on the participants' experience of the phenomenon and their willingness to participate in the study. The researcher used face-to-face interviews utilizing a semi-structured interview guide for data collection. Questions were open-ended to allow for free flow of information. Because of the sensitive nature of the study, probing questions were followed up by responses to get in-depth perceptions and experiences of clergy's involvement in domestic violence. With reference to the ethical considerations in this study, all participants were thoroughly briefed before the interview with clear explanations of the goal, procedure and advantages of the study. Participants had the opportunity to withdraw at any stage of the interview as participation was completely voluntary.Consistent with literature, this study confirmed the complex nature of domestic violence. Participants experienced various challenges on different levels in the ministry pertaining to domestic violence. These challenges primarily related to the lack of training in dealing with real life issues such as domestic violence during their theological training, the lack of theological guidelines offered by the church to address patriarchal societal practices, beliefs and gender stereotyping, and the lack of guidance on contexual interpretation of Scriptures. / South Africa

The scientific debate concerning the population phenomenon on the streets has permeated the research agendas of some areas of human knowledge, especially the study of arenas of human and social sciences. Some national researches show that the phenomenon is complex, mixed by social, psychological, objective and subjective processes ( ROSA , 2005) and comprises a synthesis of multiple determinations inherent in capitalist society (SILVA, 2009). Therefore, this thesis aims to present a critical- discursive analysis of individual identity construction work of people who have lived or are living on the streets in the city of Natal / RN, based on their own life stories, set by narratives of "I " . To build the analysis, we focus on three specific objectives: a) to discuss the representative socialization networks of individual identity construction work; b ) to characterize the perceptions of each individual concerning the population phenomenon on the streets, and c ) To examine the identification and characterization that each individual makes of his relations with the population phenomenon on the streets. In order to achieve our goals, we followed the theoretical postulates of Critical Discourse Analysis - ACD (Fairclough, 2001, 2006), specifically in its Sociological and Communicational Approach to Speech - ASCD (PEDROSA, 2014, 2015), which covers the sociology for Social Change (BAJOIT , 2006, 2008 , 2013) and Systemic Functional Linguistics, the latter, considering the Transitive system (HALLIDAY , 1985 , 1994; Halliday and Mathiessen , 2004 and CUNHA and SOUZA, 2011). Methodologically, it is a qualitative research (descriptive and interpretative), anchored on Applied Linguistics (CELANI, 1992; SIGNORINI and Cavalcanti, 1998; SIGNORINI 1998; MOITA LOPES, 1990 , 1996, 1998 , 2006 and 2013 ). The corpus is based on five life stories which were recorded during the Language and Identity Workshop : " Letters on the streets " , applied during the II Population Potiguar Seminar on the homeless and through the access to the Hidden Natal virtual community. In light of a context of social apartheid, set up by experienced hardships and jettisoning of human rights, the results point out that the individual identity construction of people who have lived or are on the streets in Natal / RN comprises a work of the individual as the subject himself in light of the construction of identity resistance, and design policy. These identities reveal an ontological will directed to the emancipation of the subjects on the streets, a politically conscious subject of rights and duties that works towards one's citizen empowerment, demanding effective promotion of public policies aimed at their social reintegration. Once the individual identities are constructed by ideological positions that underpin voices counterhegemonic and contribute to overcoming social inequalities, it appears that the subject, to build their identities, can promote social and cultural change, once delegitimizes the negative social stigmas associated with the homeless in Natal/RN.

The discussion involving the identity of social actors has taken place for some years, however, it has become significant for the discourse studies over the last years due to the fragmentation of postmodern actors. Understanding the identity as a symbolic concept that can aid in the detection of certain realities - a kind of mechanism / a magnifying glass (MERLUCCI, 1985) - you can check the linguistic materiality of the introductory text of the lattes resume as a adequate place for the formation of collective identities . The aim of this dissertation is to reflect, in a time of postmodernity, through the lattes introductory curriculum texts, the collective identities of the language researchers are portrayed in discursive and social practices based on the accumulation of cultural and academic capital. For analysis, surrounding the indisciplinary posture in Applied Linguistics (MOITA-LOPES, 2006), the descriptive / interpretive methodology was used (MAGALH?ES, 2001). Whereas the study method and the social theory, as state reasons of the research makes use of the Sociological Approach and Communicational Discourse, chain linked to the assumptions of Critical Discourse Analysis (PEDROSA, 2012a). The corpus is constituted of twenty-seven introductory texts from the lattes curriculum of language researchers, connected to three institutions of higher learning in Sergipe. After the collection, on the lattes platform, and the numbering of the curriculum in order to achieve the research objective, we performed the analysis based on three identity themes: teaching, social belonging (BAJOIT, 2006; DESCHAMPS; MOLINER, 2009) and the accumulation of academic-cultural capital (BOURDIEU, 2004; HEY, 2008). The data show that the texts of the lattes curriculum are based on hegemonic and ideological principals, referring to the accumulation of academic assets, the valuation of actors and the hierarchical positions, recognized and ratified by couples who socialize among themselves Right now, the research allows us to infer that, in postmodernity, some collective identity assumptions, contribute to the understanding of the academic reality, around the the lattes curriculum.

Social networks, in the context of the new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), have become a space of expression within the reach of all those who have access to the Internet. In Brazil, 49% of Brazilians have access to the internet, and within that number, 76% access every day. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and various other participatory and interactive proposals arouse various communication interests that include personal exchanges of information and data, marketing announcements and various other purposes. One of the most important changes around the possibilities that the networks offer has arisen for those who want to win followers and defend a cause. Thus, social movements have found in these channels of expression a fertile ground of call and interactivity with their followers. This thesis has a purpose of analyze critically the discursive manifestations of the movement Vem pra rua on his Twitter and Facebook social networks, taking as a starting point the positioning of the group in its presentation on its official website. O Vem pra rua was born as a social movement in 2014 and according to what its own leaders express in the official page of the group, it is "a suprapartidary, democratic and plural movement that arose from the spontaneous organization of the civil society to fight for a Brazil best". The research is theoretically supported by the Sociological and Communicational Approach to Discourse (ASCD), the theoretical and methodological arm of the Critical Discourse Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001, 2003), which has its axis in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary dialogue between (CID) (GUMUCIO-DAGRON, 2008, 2011), Multimodality (VIEIRA, 2015) and Functional Systemic Linguistics (LSF) (HALLIDAY, 2004).In the case of our work, we rely on the LSF Evaluation System as a tool for understanding the pathways of meaning construction that materialize in the current texts characterized by multisemiotic constructions. We have also consolidated our critical analysis with the Representation of Social Actors proposed by Teo Van Leeuwen (1997; 1008) that leads us to find the inclusion and exclusion marks in the forms chosen by the emitters to represent the actors in the text. This thesis seeks to understand, through the discourse manifested in the networks of the movement Vem pra rua, if the movement, as presented, has no partisan interests, if its articulation is based on spontaneous popular organization and if the media mobilization responds to democratic mechanisms of organization. Thus, following the methodological approach of a transdisciplinary approach, we find that the speech of presentation on the website of the movement is not a reflection of the identity construction that Vem pra rua has done in its social networks, particularly in the period before the impeachment of President Dilma. We conclude also that the new Information and Communication Technologies are potential tools of new ways of expression for minority groups, but, at the same time they are elements of great value to consolidate hegemonic groups with strong ideological interests too.

This study occurs in a where social and environmental problems reach great dimensions and provoke discussions all over the planet. Inside this social context where education is taken as a form intervention in the world, several methodological and theoretical approaches emerge indicating Environmental Education tendencies as different ways to face challenges due to environmental crisis. The maim question pursued by the research is to inquiry how schools have developed their Environmental Education experiences.
