The use of computerised games analysis to identify critical indicators of success in elite level netball

Uys, Stefanie M. (Stefanie Margaretha) January 2001 (has links)
Thesis (MScSportSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Netball is a fast and skilful team sport in which players need to be "quickthinking", because they are required to make fast and accurate decisions in ever-changing situations. Netball is a highly tactical game. Therefore the game has to be analysed on all levels of play. During every game or training session the coach has to look for those factors that influence performance and determine success. Methods of games analysis have been improved through the development of video and computer technology, in order to help coaches gather critical data. This study will utilise games analysis as a method for gaining insight into what kinds of "critical incidents" on a netball court lead a team to either score a goal, or to allow the opponent to score against them. Four expert coaches analysed game play from three top-level international netball matches in order to identify the reasons for success/failure during game play. A computer-based games analysis system was used to identify the reasons for losing ball possession during the same games analysed by the experts. The results of computer-based games analysis was compared to the analysis provided by elite coaches in order to determine the value of the technology in providing relevant information. These identified key performance indicators were then ranked according to frequency. Additional games statistics were generated, using games analysis. This knowledge will not only contribute to an understanding of how technology can support coaching, but it will also expand our understanding of the tactics of netball and thus contribute to coaches' efforts to teach players how to make "good decisions". An important by-product of this study was the identification of the key performance indicators that influence success/failure in netball. This knowledge should help coaches determine what kinds of tactical learning situations are important to include in practice sessions. It is the coach's responsibility to develop thinking players. On court - during a game - it is the players' responsibility to read the game and make instant decisions. Also during the game - during time outs and half time- it is the coach's responsibility to give the players feedback on their decision-making and to make suggestions for improvements. Both roles require effective analysis of the game. Keywords: netball; games analysis; technology / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Netbal is 'n vinnige vaardigheidspel. Beide rolle, as afrigter of speier, vereis effektiewe wedstrydanalise. Sleutelwoorde: netbal; wedstrydanalise; tegnologie / jfl201407

A Rhetorical Analysis of Motivational Speeches in Sports Films

Seeman, Brenna 07 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This paper applies Aristotle's historic modes of persuasion, namely ethos, logos, and pathos, to the motivational speeches found in 20 popular sports films. Through this analysis, major themes concerning how coaches utilized persuasive tactics were found and used to compile a list of important characteristics of motivational speeches. This initial analysis found pathos to be the most effective form of persuasion among motivational speeches in sports films. Because of this finding, a deeper analysis took place with five of the speeches, focusing specifically on how the visual, sound and other thematic elements contributed to the overall pathos of those rhetorical moments. The Narrative Paradigm and Narrative Transportation Theory were used to establish background on the effects of storytelling, specifically in sports films.

Exercise and Behavior Change in Adult Women Transitioning into Society: A Documentary Film Analysis

McWilliams, Stephen Thomas January 2014 (has links)
The Role of Film as Persuasive Tool of Social Change: Since the introduction of cinema, both non-fiction and fictional films have been used by film makers, artists, and interest groups to change minds and mold opinions. Documentary films in particular, have a history of being used in a variety of ways to further political causes, raise social or patriotic awareness, or as a call to personal activism. In this project, the use of well designed, aesthetically pleasing documentaries have been advocated for potential use in the field of sport psychology to create awareness of the work of practitioners in order to promote healthy behaviors. Filmmaking can serve the field in a number of creative ways. A recent film is submitted as a demonstration of how a well crafted film can be utilized within the field as both a advocacy piece and an educational resource. There has been a long, historical relationship between sports and film. Throughout cinematic history there have been numerous films, both narrative and documentaries, both about sports or subjects that included sports in their story. Sports lend themselves to narrative and documentary storytelling. As a filmmaker, I was drawn to a story about a non-profit organization, "Gearing Up," which uses a bicycle exercise program to help women in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The film explores the effectiveness of a therapeutic model developed by "Gearing Up" founder, Kristin Gavin. The production of the film, and my involvement as the producer and director, inspired me to explore the further use of documentary film as both a classroom teaching tool and a vehicle that can inspire behavioral change. / Kinesiology / Accompanied by one .mp4 file: Braking Cycles.

Teaching foreign students listening skills (based on films about sports)

Б., Anchugova, Yu. B. January 2022 (has links)
The main purpose of the work is to develop a methodological guide for teaching foreign students to listen to authentic texts based on the material of Russian films about sports for levels B2-C1 (second and third certification levels). Two Russian-made films «Champions» (2014, directed by A. Vakulov) and «Upward Movement» (2017, directed by A. Megerdichev) were taken as materials for development. To determine the level of complexity of the exercises presented and the volume of the material studied, the State Educational Standard for Russian as a Foreign language of the second and third levels was used. In the first chapter of the work, a theoretical and methodological review of psychological and pedagogical literature is presented, classifications of types of listening in domestic and foreign methods are studied. In the second chapter, a system of step-by-step work on listening in a foreign audience when watching sports films is developed. The development contains 90 exercises that correspond to the pre-text, text and the post-text stage of working with the film. Each of the stages contains tasks of both closed (single / multiple choice, matching) and open type (filling in gaps, paraphrasing, text compression, etc.). Each stage involves working with grammatical and lexical material.
