Development and optimization of new generation start-up instrumentation systems (SUI) for domestic CANDU reactors

Nasimi, Elnara 01 December 2010 (has links)
Due to the age and operating experience of Bruce Power units, equipment ageing and obsolescence has become one of the main challenges that need to be resolved for all systems, structures and components in order to ensure a safe and reliable production of energy. The research objectives of this thesis will focus on methodology for modernization of Start- Up Instrumentation (SUI), both in-core and Control Room equipment, using a new generation of detectors and cables in order to manage obsolescence. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a new systematic approach to SUI installation/replacement procedure development and optimization. Although some additional features, such as real-time data monitoring and storage/archiving solutions for SUI systems are also examined to take full advantage of today’s digital technology, the objective of this thesis does not include detailed parametrical studies of detector or system performance. Instead, a number of technological, operational and maintenance issues associated with Start-Up Instrumentation systems at Bruce Power will be identified in this project and a structured approach to developing a replacement/installation procedure that can be standardized and used across all of the domestic CANDU stations is proposed. Finally, benefits of Hierarchical Control Chart (HCC) methodology for all stages of plant life management, such as system design, development, operation and maintenance are demonstrated. Keywords: Task Breakdown and Analysis methodology, installation/removal procedure development and optimization, risk-based analysis and optimization, Hierarchical Control Chart (HCC) methodology for system maintenance and troubleshooting, Start-Up Instrumentation (SUI), Ion Chambers, Fission Chambers, proportional counters, Shutdown System 1 (SDS1), Shutdown System 2 (SDS2). / UOIT

Právní ochrana databází / Legal protection of databases

Šlajerová, Martina January 2008 (has links)
The rising importance of technological development especially in Europe and the USA, which are the largest producers of databases, requires an internationally unified regulation for the protection of databases. The aim of this thesis is to present these issues and highlight the shortcomings of the current and proposed legislation in order to determine adequate legal protection of databases and how this can be achieved. The first chapter provides an overview of the definitions and the basic concepts. This includes the protection of databases by copyright and the sui generis right and a list of criteria in order to establish adequate legal protection. The second chapter outlines the legal protection of databases in the European Community, including the current legal system, its benefits and drawbacks and alternative protection to sui generis. Additionally the theories and current judicial practice are presented to further clarify the issue. The third chapter deals with the alternative legal protection to copyright of databases in the U.S. that in many ways differs from the European legislation. Similarly both copyright and database protection alternatives are presented in terms of legislation, case law and theories relevant to this area. The fourth and last chapter focuses on the international regulation of databases, and any potential changes in international regulation with regard to protecting databases. Moreover theories and rulings in this area are presented. Finally all the important points of this thesis are summarized and adequate legal measures for the protection of databases are suggested based on the advantages and disadvantages of the current forms of protection and judicial practice.

Temporal Distribution of Larval Fish Community in Tan-sui River Estuary, Taiwan, and the Application of Barcode Technique on the Fish Larva & Juvenile Identification.

Lin, Cheng-Yu 01 September 2010 (has links)
The main objectives of this study is to :¡]1¡^probe into relationship of larval fish communities and environmental water factor in Tan-sui River Estuary, and observe assemblages of larval fish within different time scale¡F¡]2¡^to compare the results of DNA barcode with mophorlogical identification in larval and juvenile¡F¡]3¡^conjecture the recruit phase & the early life cycles of DNA indentified fish groups associated estuaries in Tan-sui. It shows that recruitment family, such as Scorpaenidae, Engraulidae, Sciaenidae, Sillaginidae and Gobiidae are the main fish have significant differences between larval fish community and the four seasons in Tan-sui estuary. Besides, statistical informations show community distribution and most environmental factors have significant differences, but temperature is the most. We compare the communities of twenty years ago, spring, autumn or summer are the opportune time of recruitment, 72 and 31 families of fish larvae were collected over past five and twenty years ago respectively, it shows that Tan-sui estuarine environment have been improved. We used 96 COI sequences in DNA indetification. Comparing the results of specimens identification between DNA barcoding and different morphological resolution power, DNA barcoding could up to the lower level than the tradiontional way. And after counting, the success rate of DNA identification was higher than different morphological resolving power¡Fthe numbers of mophological type are higher than the taxa after DNA indetification, it means that many morphological characters are not constant in early developmental stage, and DNA barcoding can be a useful tool to assist in promoting the success rate of the traditional way. Comparing with references, 34 indentified by DNA Barcode can conjecture recruit phase & early life cycles, most of these specimens are categorized to¡unondependent marine fish¡v, and the others are¡udependent marine fish¡v, but in fact, some of¡utrue estuarine¡v¡B¡ufeshwater¡vand ¡udiadromous¡vspecies can be indetified by morphology, it was due to the incompletion of the sequence database or sampling error. We should be able to understand the early life history of fish and the role of local habitat for the resources conservation and managenment in the future as long as we collect more complete COI database.

The protection of geographical indications for agricultural products in Africa using trademarks and sui generis legislation

Sheldon, Lauren Natasha January 2014 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM / A geographical indication (GI) is a sign by which a product is identified as having its origin in a particular territory and as having certain qualities, characteristics and a reputation, which are associated with that origin. There is currently no uniform international mechanism of protecting GIs, however, the framework for the protection of GIs is provided by Articles 22 to 24 of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). Article 23.1 provides a distinct advantage for the protection of wines and spirits as compared to the general protection of Article 22 for all other products. This thesis argues that a uniform system of protection for GIs should be established internationally, and that protection would be to the advantage of developing countries. The purpose of this study is to determine the best available method (i.e. trademark legislation or sui generis legislation) for protecting GIs for agricultural products of developing countries, through analysing the international legal framework governing the protection of GIs and the methods of national protection available as applied in Ethiopia, South Africa and India. The central argument advanced is that the use of trademarks should be a stepping stone, sui generis legislation is the ideal. Sui generis (separate) legislation should be drafted to fulfil the obligations of TRIPS and to ensure the extended protection, through national legislation, of all goods within other Member States. It is highly unlikely that the TRIPS Member States will agree to the extended protection of the Article 23. Therefore, the most suitable method to achieve such protection would be for Member States to extend their national protection through sui generis legislation.
