An experimental study of forced ventilation glovebox fires

Peatross, Michelle J. 12 September 2009 (has links)
An experimental study was performed to investigate the integrity of gloveboxes when subjected to lathe drip pan fires. These fires are potentially dangerous since glovebox failure may allow hazardous gases to escape containment. A full scale mockup of a glovebox and corresponding air flow system was constructed. Careful consideration was given to the two components expected to cause glovebox failure: the gloves and windows. In addition to normal tests, tests which introduced added ventilation openings (i.e. missing gloves, missing window) were also performed. The glovebox ventilation system places these fires in the category of overhead forced ventilation compartment fires. Since little data has been obtained previously for this type of fire, further experiments were conducted to determine the effect of fuel surface area on fire behavior. In the past, these fires have been successfully modelled as well-stirred reactors. Results showed that overall containment was achieved under normal glovebox conditions. Added ventilation opening tests, however, showed that these scenarios would lead to a loss of containment. Nevertheless, under no conditions did a catastrophic glovebox failure occur. Furthermore, experiments with reduced fuel surface areas showed that the fires became less hazardous as the pan diameter decreased. Exhaust gas concentrations, temperature data, burn rates, smoke generation, and heat releases were the criteria used to form this conclusion. Neither a well-stirred or two-layer environment was observed. / Master of Science

Empirical investigation of life cycle cost of road studs on national roads

Du Preez, Emile 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study involved a detail empirical investigation into the different road studs in use on South Africa’s national road network and how they performed on the network under different road conditions in order to establish which road stud, under what conditions, offers best value for money in terms of life-cycle cost for the South African National Roads Agency Limited. These main questions were asked: What is the most cost-effective/value-for-money stud option for SANRAL to choose for each of the specified road categories? Under which conditions do the studs perform differently and what is the most likely mode of failure of specific studs linked to a specific road condition and road category? The South African and Australian road stud standards were reviewed to gain understanding of which criteria one has to consider when evaluating road studs and what information would be needed for the research. Similar studies on road studs were reviewed to compare the criteria that were looked at, namely Guidelines for the use of Raised Pavement Markers, developed by the Department of Transport in the United States, and Feasibility of using accelerated pavement testing to evaluate the long term performance of raised pavement markers, a research paper by the Florida Department of Transport. This research made use of a standardised questionnaire containing questions on various elements found to be key to the road stud performance. The study was done on approximately 4 659 km of roads in SANRAL’s Western region, consisting of the Western Cape and Northern Cape. From the literature review, it was identified that there is a need for the SABS standards to be updated to include the testing of structural properties of studs. SANRAL should look at the lack in specification requirements when asking for the installation of road studs. From the data available it was observed that the preferred studs were the Ferro Lynx followed by the STA+52 stud. They are predominantly used on the roads that were included in the survey. They perform well on the national roads. The data suggests that these two studs and the Rhino stud are the best-performing studs with the least dislodgement and loss in reflectivity. The STA+52 and Rhino stud, however, are fairly new on the market and more data for theirs full life cycle should be obtained for further monitoring The regression analysis indicated that 36 per cent of the variation in the reflectivity of the Ferro Lynx stud can be explained by the surface width of the road, the traffic volume measured as ELVS and the period installed. All the coefficients were significant with a 5 per cent significance. The prediction tables on the weighted data set, indicated that one should always consider width of road when choosing a road stud and that the reflectivity of studs deteriorates most on the narrower roads.

Krisur : A wearable can make the difference between life and death.

Troilo, Andrea January 2022 (has links)
Krisur is a project about a low energy device that works as a “lifesaving” object with the function of pairing, or connecting, the single individual to the Government in case of emergency. The aim of this is to explore and tackle new possibilities for connecting people to a no-hackable source or to a social system (e.g., Hesa Fredrik). This will also bring a reflection around geo-political transformation over time and in what way lo-fi technology is connected to it.

This dissertation parts from a general concern about the political investment over the bodies throughout the western society history, investment that transforms individuals in a social subject. To elucidate this case, we reference public safety programs implemented in Brazil, where inhabitants of slums and outskirts have been targeted by a series of actions which seem to remember what philosopher Gilles Deleuze (2006) conceptualized as “society of control”. Starting from Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis (1986, 2011), it is focused and questioned how the discursive production, over the years, positioned a neighborhood of the city of Canoas, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, constituting it as a territory to be pacified, from what José Geraldo Soares Damico (2011) called public safety and participation devices. The purpose of this study is not to descant about safety policies, taking sides. It is proposed, based on an approach influenced by the works of Michel Foucault (1984, 1986, 1995, 2008, 2009, 2011), to make a critical analysis of the way which certain places, understood as socially vulnerable, were selected to be invested with specific public safety actions, transforming them into a society of control. The field of study is the Guajuviras neighborhood, located in the city of Canoas, which has been the target of several actions implemented by the Municipal Public Safety and Citizenship Secretariat, trough an agreement with the Ministry of Justice of the federal government, developing actions of the National Public Safety with Citizenship Program (Pronasci), and particularly the City’s Sport and Leisure Program (PELC), as part of the actions of this broad safety policy. Specifically, we analyze the speeches produced by young people about the place they live and the actions of the public safety policies, with particular emphasis on the way that it is presented to them, as a device of social control and construction of a specific subjectivity by which they are being affected. For a better understanding, this work makes reference to youth cultures and different forms of sociability that are experienced in multiple ways by the youngsters in this historical and local context. In The researched people have ages between 14 and 29 years old, historically positioned by violence, inhabitants of a territory to be pacified and targeted by safety and participation devices. The subjects of this research participate, now and then, in some actions of the public safety program PELC. These are the results of and ethnographic research (participant observation and field diary) recorded by the empirical contacts in the places where the activities occur.
