Player Performance and Team Revenues: NBA Player Salary Analysis

Stanek, Tyler 01 January 2016 (has links)
The National Basketball Association (NBA) generated well over $4 billion in revenues during the 2014-15 season. I analyze the value of a win to a team in terms of revenue and examine the potential underpayment or overpayment of players and superstars throughout the league relative to their marginal revenue product (MRP). My findings suggest that players are overpaid, especially superstars. However, it is important to consider the fixed-revenue streams a team receives before assuming a player is simply overpaid compared to his MRP. In congruence with previous literature, I find that veterans are overpaid at the expense of younger players’ lower salaries. I also look at the drivers of a player’s salary and find that general managers tend to overpay for points relative to other statistics.

A Comparison of Perceptions Concerning Differential Salary Compensation for Teachers in the Eight Largest School Districts of Texas

Schroeder, Carolyn K. (Carolyn Koller) 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine if educationally, politically, and economically viable alternatives to the single salary schedule for teachers exist in the eight largest school districts in Texas. After a review of the literature, a questionnaire was developed designed to obtain views of superintendents, school board members, randomly selected principals, teachers, and PTA members in the eight school districts on these issues: whether a multi-factor teacher salary schedule should be developed; which factors should be included in such a system; what amount of monetary compensation should be awarded for each factor; and if teacher job performance is a factor, what criteria should be used to evaluate teachers and who would conduct the evaluations. Analyses of the data were conducted according to the following demographic variables: school district; position, sex, and ethnicity of the respondents; whether the respondents owned homes in the school districts; and whether the respondents had children enrolled in the district schools. The results were presented for the respondents as a whole and according to the various demographic variables.

MITIGATING SEX BIAS IN COMPENSATION DECISIONS: THE ROLE OF COMPARATIVE DATA

Lowery, Meghan Rachelle 01 December 2010 (has links)
Gender differences in salaries are prominent in most fields. Several laws exist to decrease the amount of pay discrimination and provide remedies for discriminatory organizational behaviors, yet these laws have proven insufficient to eradicate pay inequities. One source for such discrimination in pay stems from the evaluation of employee performance. Performance appraisal systems can be biased in very small ways that yield larger negative effects on later employment-related decisions, such as compensation. The goal of this study was to examine decision-making processes and conclusions raters make during the evaluation of employees. It was expected that the type of presentation and the content of the ratings of performance sub-dimensions would affect gender differences in composite ratings, salary increases, and merit bonuses. Specifically, women were expected to be rated lower when employee performance information was presented sequentially, where it would be harder to directly compare one employee with another and thus not mitigate sex bias. Comparatively, when employee performance information was presented in aggregate form, where comparisons among employees would be easier, no sex bias was expected. It was also hypothesized that in the sequential condition, participants would provide casuistry-based reasoning for their decisions such that explanations for men's better performance would be justified by their performance on the sub-dimension on which the male candidate was rated highly. No effect was found for target gender on any of the outcomes. There was a significant difference for participant gender in the amount of salary increases and merit bonuses assigned. Male participants assigned significantly higher raises and bonuses than female participants to employees. There was also a strong main effect for task-related skills across all outcomes. Employees who were higher in the task dimension were rated higher, awarded higher pay, and given larger bonuses. There were no gender differences in the task ratings. Qualitative data analyses support these conclusions. Although participants provided lengthy reasons for their decisions, none showed or explained a gender difference. Limitations and recommendations for future studies are discussed.

Arruda, Rafael Denes January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on qualification and its relation to the working and non-working spheres, being the social relations, that conform livelihood and work, the lenses through which the process of qualification for tourism is investigated. This research took place in the city of Gramado, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The investigation gives priority to two kinds of working activities: lodging and feeding, while the case studies are: 1) a “hotel”, 2) a “restaurant”, 3) a “resort”. The main objective of this research is to investigate the construction of qualification in the field of tourism, emphasizing the social relations that are contained in the process of education, consumption and the use of free time to conform qualification in each kind of activity. The central idea is that work management present different tendencies in relation to work organization that demonstrates that there is no ideal way of organizing work, but different ways of interaction between what is offered and what is demanded which, at the end, correspond to states of social relations in enterprises, sections or societies. As a result from this hypothesis, we consider that the changes in qualification are conditioned by a process of incorporation of work forms and social relations from a noncapitalist type, even though these are attached to the construction of the so called salary relation. The applied methodology is based on semi-standardized interviews (21 informants) and in observation. In the same direction proposed by Alaluf and Enguita, this study analyses qualification from a historical-sociological perspective, taking into consideration the process of transformation of social relations that take part on the evolution of works and the aspects that characterize the livelihood of those who work with tourism in Gramado – including its formative dimension.

The database used is the PNAD of 2014. There are three chapters. In the first, it is made an analysis of the motherhood role in women's wage differentials. The main contribution is to place Brazil in the literature of motherhood pay gap, emphasizing mainly that the effects of maternity should exclude differences of productive characteristics between mothers and non mothers. Four regressionn specificantions and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition were used, both with correction for selection bias and considering adaptations to complex databases. Main results: i) salary penalties for mothers; ii) increase in the wage penalty with the number of children; (iii) stabilization of the penalty from the third child; iv) wage difference due to maternity similar to that found for genders; v) maternal characteristics as a determinant of lower wages, vi) lower effect of maternity on wages for mothers in typical male activities. In the second chapter analysis of the motherhood pay gap for all salary distribution, conditional and unconditional. In order to analyze conditional effects, quantitative regressions are adopted, whereas for the unconditional analysis it is used the decomposition of Melly (2006). The innovations are to make quantile study, selection bias correction in both techniques following an adaptation of Buchisky (2001), and adopt the decomposition of Melly (2006) to measure the motherhood pay gap. Main results: i) the greater maternity penalty is in the highest conditional quantiles; ii) the higher the number of children leave higher wage penalty in all the conditional deciles; iii) the wage gap due to maternity increases with the level of income; iv) most of the wage gap is not explained by differences in attributes between groups. In the third chapter it is argued that marriage generates a wage premium for men and a wage penalty for women, what can increase the gender pay differentials. This behavior is shown for the wage distribution. The methodologies used were: decomposition of the T-Theil index, unconditional quantile regressions (by RIF) and the decompositions of Oaxaca-Blinder (1973) and Firpo, Fortin and Lemieux (2009). Main results: i) there is a marriage wage premium for men; ii) there is a matrimonial salary penalty for women; iii) the division of domestic labor does not justify higher incomes for men; iv) there are indications of differential wage treatment for single men and married women in the labor market; v) the wage penalty of marriage for women is higher for those with higher incomes; vi) salary bonuses are higher for men with higher incomes; (vii) single marital status is the worst in terms of wages for men; (viii) married marital status is the worst in terms of wages for women.
