Phan, Van Trung Nghia January 2023 (has links)
Saab Kockums has long time used composite materials in the construction of their new ships. This brings many advantages linked to stealth technology, but at the same time poses some other challenges regarding installations on board. This thesis was therefore performed with the aim of investigating the possibility of using cargo rails for standardized assembly on these ships. Furthermore, a developed standard solution for assembly where ease of use is the focus for this study.  The work begins with an analysis of products from the market and potential development is identified. The focus of the investigation was to find the optimal design for the montage. These potentials were then used to generate ideas for parts in the design. The best idea is filtered through scoring linked to the set of requirements. For attachment of the construction, it was determined with the help of various literature studies along with tensile test data provided by Kockums. The literature study included studies on properties of sandwich constructions as well as tensile tests on different load cases that were carried out on other reports. Finally, the concept is verified based on different aspects. The durability is based on FEM/manual calculations, the manufacturing is based on interview and finally the assembly is based on 3D printing.  A construction of the assembly was obtained as the result of the work and met all the requirements that were set. The construction consists of pre-assembled cargo rails that have a homogeneous appearance together with angle fittings for mounting any foundations or dampers. The structure shall be attached to the bulkhead with M8 blind rivet nuts for areas without impact requirements and M10 nuts together with laminate reinforcement for areas with impact requirements. As proven, it is possible to manufacture these in a few simple steps from standard profiles from the market and easily fit on board the ships.

Kontextuell helhet av 3D-printad träullsandwich - Från prefab till printning in-situ / Contextual entirety of 3D-printed wooden sandwich - From prefab to printing in-situ

Lundberg, Rasmus January 2019 (has links)
The project aims to propose a direction for how additive manufacturing methods can influence architecture, to study the techniques and find out which direction could be perceived as most rewarding or viable. How to use the potential of the new technology in a good way? I have tried to develop a product that utilizes the potential of the additive manufacturing methods and which is conceivable for full-scale realization in the construction sector in the near future. The product consists of a method for producing long lasting sandwich constructions with high wood content. The method reduces the building industry's climate impact and can provide great spatial qualities and design possibilities. Through physical experiments and exploration of various digital fabrication methods, I have tried to visualize and identify possibilities with these new technological aids. Through practical tests, I have tested my ideas of how these methods can be used effectively. The project was expanded from initially studying additive production methods to, later during the application phase, also include digital aids such as photogrammetry and tools for parametric design. The project has resulted in a strategy for printing cellulose-based sandwich constructions in printed molds of recyclable biocomposite.

Study the Effects of Core Orientation and Different Face Thicknesses on Mechanical Behavior of Honeycomb Sandwich Structures Under Three Point Bending

Lister, Joshua M 01 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)
This study will present the Experimental, numerical and analytical characterizations of composite sandwich structures needed to optimize structure design. In this study, the effects of varying honeycomb core ribbon orientation and varying face sheet thickness’s have on the flexural behavior of honeycomb sandwich structures was investigated. Honeycomb sandwich panels were constructed using Hexcel 6367 A250-5H carbon fiber face sheets and Hexcel Nomex HRH-10-1/8-5 honeycomb cores. The mechanical properties of the constituent materials were discovered experimentally using ASTM standards and theoretical models using honeycomb mechanics and classical beam and plate theory are described. A failure mode map for loading under three point bending is developed from previous works by Triantafillou and Gibson26, showing the dependence of failure mode on face sheet to core thickness and honeycomb core ribbon orientation. Beam specimens are tested with the effects of Honeycomb core ribbon orientation and unequal face sheet thickness’s examined. Experimental data sufficiently agrees with theoretical predictions. A finite element model was developed in ABAQUS/CAE to validate experimental and analytical analysis and produced agreeable results. Optimal bending stiffness and strength with respect to minimum weight was analyzed. The results reveal an important role core ribbon orientation has in a sandwich beam’s bending behavior, and design of unequal ply count face sheets can produce higher stiffness to weight ratios than conventional symmetric sandwich structures of similar weight when subjected to a single static load.

Förstyvningseffekter i sandwichväggar

Fässler, Stefan January 2012 (has links)
The dimension of sandwich walls with one structural wythe is normally determined so that onlythe inner wythe contributes to the elements load capacity. Whereas the insulation, trussconnector and outer wythe only constitute a load from a structural point of view. The possibility to take advantage of the structural stiffening effects these elements have on theinner wythe is examined in this essay. This is partly achieved by researching the existing literaturethat deals with sandwich walls and also further studies of the structural qualities of concrete. The load capacity of an example wall is calculated initially without any stiffening effects, whichare thereafter calculated separately. The results for several variations of the sandwich wall arepresented in the form of diagrams and analyzed. The calculations give relatively small increases in load capacity, while the literary researchindicates a higher risk of crack occurrence in the façade. Therefor the conclusion is made that itis not recommendable to attempt using potential gains in load capacity.

Strength of Sandwich Panels Loaded in In-plane Compression

Lindström, Anders January 2007 (has links)
The use of composite materials in vehicle structures could reduce the weight and thereby the fuel consumption of vehicles. As the road safety of the vehicles must be ensured, it is vital that the energy absorbing capability of the composite materials are similar to or better than the commonly used steel structures. The high specific bending stiffness of sandwich structures can with advantage be used in vehicles, provided that the structural behaviour during a crash situation is well understood and possible to predict. The purpose of this thesis is to identify and if possible to describe the failure initiation and progression in in-plane compression loaded sandwich panels. An experimental study on in-plane compression loaded sandwich panels with two different material concepts was conducted. Digital speckle photography (DSP) was used to record the displacement field of one outer face-sheet surface during compression. The sandwich panels with glass fibre preimpregnated face-sheets and a polymer foam core failed due to disintegration of the face-sheets from the core, whereas the sandwich panels with sheet molding compound face-sheets and a balsa core failed in progressive end-crushing. A simple semi-empirical model was developed to describe the structural response before and after initial failure. The postfailure behaviour of in-plane compression loaded sandwich panels was studied by considering the structural behaviour of sandwich panels with edge debonds. A parametrical finite element model was used to determine the influence of different material and geometrical properties on the buckling and postbuckling failure loads. The postbuckling failure modes studied were debond crack propagation and face-sheet failure. It could be concluded that the postbuckling failure modes were mainly determined by the ratio between the fracture toughness of the face-core interface and the bending stiffness of the face-sheets. / QC 20101111

Pseudo electron-deficient organometallics: limited reactivity towards electron-donating ligands

Pitto-Barry, Anaïs, Lupan, A., Zegke, Markus, Swift, Thomas, Attia, A.A.A., Lord, Rianne M., Barry, Nicolas P.E. 19 September 2017 (has links)
Yes / Half-sandwich metal complexes are of considerable interest in medicine, material, and nanomaterial chemistry. The design of libraries of such complexes with particular reactivity and properties is therefore a major quest. Here, we report the unique and peculiar reactivity of eight apparently 16-electron half-sandwich metal (ruthenium, osmium, rhodium, and iridium) complexes based on benzene-1,2-dithiolato and 3,6-dichlorobenzene-1,2-dithiolato chelating ligands. These electron-deficient complexes do not react with electron-donor pyridine derivatives, even with the strong σ-donor 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) ligand. The Ru, Rh, and Ir complexes accept electrons from the triphenylphosphine ligand (σ-donor, π-acceptor), whilst the Os complexes were found to be the first examples of non-electron-acceptor electron-deficient metal complexes. We rationalized these unique properties by a combination of experimental techniques and DFT/TDFT calculations. The synthetic versatility offered by this family of complexes, the low reactivity at the metal center, and the facile functionalization of the non-innocent benzene ligands is expected to allow the synthesis of libraries of pseudo electron-deficient half-sandwich complexes with unusual properties for a large range of applications.

Ultimate Strength of Clamped Steel-Elastomer Sandwich Panels under Combined In-plane Compression and Lateral Pressure

Zhou, Feng 21 February 2008 (has links)
An efficient interaction formula and a semi-analytical method are developed for calculating the ultimate strength of steel-elastomer sandwich panels under combined in-plane compression and lateral pressure. By using the Galerkin method and extending the semi-analytical method to clamped sandwich panels, the governing equations of sandwich panels have been solved by the Galerkin method. The material nonlinearity is treated by iteration and a three-dimensional mesh. For the load case of pure lateral pressure, the ultimate strength from the semi-analytical method is similar to that from hinge line theory and finite element analysis (FEA). However, the semi-analytical method requires about as much computation as FEA, and it is therefore not suitable for design. Finite element modeling and nonlinear analysis are performed to calculate the ultimate strength of sandwich panels under combined load. The results agree with experimental results. This verifies the accuracy of the current finite element model. The verified finite element model is used to obtain the results for a large set of sandwich panels with various dimensions and load combinations. The FEA results for pure lateral pressure load cases are used to derive a correction factor for the hinge line formula. Statistical analysis confirms that the generalized hinge line formula gives accurate values of ultimate strength of sandwich panels under pure lateral pressure. Except for the pressure-only FEA data points, the other FEA data points are corrected so as not to count the in-plane load carried by the elastomer core. Based on the corrected FEA data points, a general expression is developed for an interaction equation. The resulting equation has a bias of -0.003 and a standard deviation of 0.029. Since the radius of the interaction curve is close to 1, this standard deviation is of the order of 3%, which shows that the ultimate strength given by the equation is very close to the FEA results. The interaction equation is so simple that the ultimate strength of clamped sandwich panels under combined in-plane compression and lateral pressure can be easily calculated. / Ph. D.
