Kon Satoshi's Paranoia Agent is a series that demonstrates how many types of identity are constructed. While some aspects of the series are based in fantasy, Paranoia Agent takes place in a Tokyo that closely resembles the Tokyo of the real world. In particular, a corporate icon named Maromi parallels the rise of icons such as Hello Kitty in Japan; the public's devotion to Maromi demonstrates how consumerism shapes one's personal identity. Consumerism can also be used to explain the existence of Lil' Slugger, a type of phantasm who initially appears to free the people of Tokyo from their problems, but is actually a "crutch" that society uses to run away from reality. The destination of this escape can be called "consumutopia," a virtual space of "perfect consumption" where reality can be ignored. Consumutopia is one example of the - real or metaphorical - "spaces" that are examined in Paranoia Agent.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka Bitcoins egenskaper och funktioner samt diskutera dess eventuella påverkan på dagens ekonomiska system. Den forskning som publicerats på ämnet undersöker främst tekniska och säkerhetsmässiga detaljer, det är därför intressant att analysera ur en ekonomisk synvinkel. Genom att använda makroekonomisk teori ska jag försöka klargöra om Bitcoin kan konkurrera med dagens valutor. Bitcoins volatilitet i värde gör det tvivelaktigt, en volatilitet som inte kan kontrolleras. Bitcoin uppfyller delar av de funktioner och egenskaper som definierar en valuta enligt makroekonomisk teori, men inte lika många som fiatpengar och Bitcoin bör därför inte kunna konkurrera med dagens valutor. Fiatpengar är att föredra även i andra områden som acceptans och säkerhet. Bitcoin är bättre ur ett kostnadsperspektiv, dock under specifika omständigheter som sällan uppfylls. Bitcoin kommer därför tills vidare fungera som ett alternativ betalningssystem och valuta för personer och företag som är villiga att ta de risker som medföljer. / The aim of this thesis is to investigate Bitcoins attributes and functions and discuss its effect on today’s economic system. The academic work that been published on the subject investigate technical and safety aspects, it is therefore interesting to analyse from a macroeconomic point of view. By using macroeconomic theory I will try to clarify if Bitcoin can compete with today’s currencies. Bitcoins volatility in value makes it doubtful. Bitcoins volatility in value makes it questionable, a volatility that cannot be controlled. Bitcoin meet part of the functions and characteristics that define a currency as macroeconomic theory, but not as many as fiatmoney and should therefore not be able to compete with today's currencies. Fiatmoney is preferable also in other areas such as acceptance and security. Bitcoin is better from a cost perspective, but under specific circumstances that are rarely met. Bitcoin will therefore until further serve as an alternative payment system and currency individuals and companies that are willing to take the risks included.

Perfect Blue is an anime (Japanese animation) film directed by Kon Satoshi released in 1997. The film revolves around a female idol (a pop star) named Mima who quits her career as an idol to become an actress. She gradually loses her mind, as the pressures from her acting career, her managers, fans and a stalker catch up to her. Perfect Blue touches on the blurring line between fiction and reality, the objectification of women (and idols) as mere products, and the role of women in the idol industry. It is also a stark critique of the hegemonic masculinity and the gender roles that are imposed on women in Japanese society. This thesis presents anime as an important pop culture phenomenon with a massive influence worldwide. The thesis examines the gender stereotypes propagated by this phenomenon and proposes a that Kon’s work is different compared to other anime. This work compares how gender roles are portrayed in the different versions: The Japanese original and the US English subtitles and dubbing. Methodologically, the analysis relies on close observation of the use of the Japanese first and second person pronouns and sentence-final particles in the characters’ language, since “the use of these features is known to be highly gender-dependent” (Hiramoto 2013, 55). This study comes to the conclusion that the subtitles and the dubbing provide a relatively close rendering of gender of the Japanese text, even if the linguistic resources of English do not allow for the translation of gendered Japanese pronouns and sentence-final particles. This means that the subtitles and dubbings maintain the feminist message Kon wanted to give in his film. The study concludes by stressing the importance of taking into account the use of specific pronouns and sentence-final particles when translating Japanese, as these particles are gender-loaded. It also emphasises the importance of being critical of anime’s hegemonic masculinity, and argues that Kon goes against hegemony by portraying a strong and independent female character.

Le présent mémoire consiste en une analyse thématique des représentations féminines dans l’œuvre de Satoshi Kon, de Perfect Blue à Paprika. L’objectif de ce travail est de démontrer que ces images de la femme reflètent la place des femmes dans la société japonaise contemporaine. À cet effet, nous avons examiné les films du réalisateur selon l’approche des études féministes du cinéma. Nous avons divisé notre analyse en trois thèmes : la violence, la sexualité et le double. Il apparaît que les représentations féminines des longs-métrages de Kon possèdent effectivement des parallèles au sein la société nippone actuelle. Le réalisateur emploie des figures et des motifs narratifs communs au Japon et l’anime afin de produire et reproduire les stéréotypes de genre. Par ailleurs, il utilise les éléments filmiques et les particularités du médium de l’anime pour appuyer ces définitions des rôles sexuels. Cette étude est originale par son angle d’approche féministe et psychanalytique qui est rarement adopté par les théoriciens de l’anime. Les études portant sur ce médium sont d’ailleurs récentes et s’intéressent généralement à l’esthétique de l’anime ou à la formation d’une identité nationale japonaise plutôt qu’à la construction du genre dans un média de culture populaire. / The present thesis consists of a thematic analysis of the feminine representations in Satoshi Kon’s work, from Perfect Blue to Paprika. Our objective is to demonstrate that these female depictions reflect the status of women in contemporary japanese society. To this end, we examined the director’s movies according to feminist film theory. Also, we separated our analysis in three themes : violence, sexuality and the double. It seems that Kon’s feminine representations possess parallels to the present Japanese society. Indeed, the director uses figures and narrative motifs common to Japan and anime in order to produce and reproduce gender stereotypes. In addition, he utilizes filmic elements and the particularities of the anime medium to support these definitions of sexual roles. This study is original in its feminist and psychoanalytic approach which is rarely employed by anime theorists. Furthermore, the studies regarding this medium are fairly new and usually focus on the anime easthetic and the establishment of a Japanese national identity rather than the construction of gender in a popular culture media.
