Development of an Autonomous Laser Scanning System for Harsh Underwater Environment

Dong, Hong-Wei 14 February 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to design a laser scanning system for a high temperature and acidic environment to measure small-scale surface roughness of seabed and to collect information related to calcium carbonate debris. The study comprises two parts. One is to construct the hardware and software of the laser scanning system. Two is to test the system at sea. The system were tested at Kuishantao sea area, an area with many submarine springs. The temperature of the hot water from the submarine springs can be as high as 126¢XC. Key substances from this type of hot springs are surfur and air bubbles composed of CO2, N2, O2, SO2, and H2S. These chemicals make the sea water in this area acidic, and the pH value can be less than 2. In other words, this sea area is a high temperature and very acidic environment According the acidic resistant test result, the researchers decided to use Polypropylene (PP) as the material. The laser scanning system captures information automatically, and it uses industrial single board computer (PC104) as the control platform. The researchers selected red laser, which is monotonous, directional, and coherent Lithium batteries, can be recharged repetitively, were used to supply the power. High-precision positioning, high resolution, and with easy speed and angle control stepping motors were chosen for the system. For the software, the researchers chose the Window operating system. The hardware and software of this system are highly compatible. Operating the system is very intuitive because windows are used as the interface, and the hardware has high supporting capacity. This arrangement makes data analysis later on very convenient. Images acquired from conducting the actual experiment at sea that need to be processed. A CCD camcorder with fixed location and angle was used to capture images. With the high brightness characteristic of laser and simple threshold values for screening, the researchers got the pixel position of laser beans. Then a calibrated the camcorder was used to switch the pixel coordinates to obtain the actual size of the object.

Calibration of CCD Camera for Underwater Laser Scanning System

Hwaung, Tien-Chen 04 February 2002 (has links)
To estimate the correct dimension of the target on the underwater, we can use CCD camera and cast laser light strip onto the target, and then observe the displacement of laser light to get the dimension. Since the laser light will show on different situation, it's due to the surface of the target is not smooth. When we get the image from CCD camera, we need to calibrate the displacement of the laser light and return to the actual dimension of the target on the underwater. We know the optical distortion and non-linearity of the CCD camera will influence to get the correct image, also the location of camera is. That's the reason we need to calibrate the camera first. It was a mathematical way to explain the calibration of CCD camera non-linearity before. On this subject, we lay vertical and horizontal grid lines of 50 mm span on an acrylic plate. These grid lines are same as the longitudes and latitudes of the map. We estimate the target with the pair of interpolated longitude and latitude same as to be used to estimate the location of the point in the world coordinate system. And choose some targets with different size and form to use to verify the approach. By the way, we also test if there is any influence for the clear of water. The results indicate the error is under 3 \% when we catch the image on the underwater by a calibrated CCD camera.

Underlag för utformning av statistikrapporter i ett scannersystem / Input to the design of statistical reports of a scanning system

Karlsson, Maria January 2011 (has links)
This study aims to provide support and suggestions for the design of statistical reports to WoodEye's new statistical database based on interviews with a sample of customers of Innovativ Vision AB. The new databas will be developed because of the improved fifth generation WoodEye 5, that will be in operation in late 2011. The customers varies widely in scope, and therefore the new statistical database should be characterized by a greater freedom of choice. Automatic sorting of wood panels imply a higher capacity and a smoother inspection. A greater variety of products can be produced, and a larger amount of sorting rules can be applied to automatic inspection of wood than in the case of manual inspection. The interviews reveal that there are wide variations in follow-up activities between the companies. The follow-ups the reference companies perform today are primarily whether the actual production is related to the deferred production, personnel monitoring, availability monitoring and supplier monitoring. Many of the companies demand some kind of defects statistics, for optimal follow-up of the raw material.

Technology development has improving the use of LASER scanning systems as an alternative and, mainly, as a complementary data source to conventional photogrammetric procedures in mapping and environmental study activities. The main reasons that encouraged the use of LASER scanning systems for mapping purposes are the three-dimensional surveying of the scene and the characteristic of signal penetration in vegetation. Despite these advantages, costs of LASER scanning systems and airborne surveying missions are high. Studies that depend on aerial Remote Sensing with high temporal frequency are often limited because aerial conventional methods with manned aircrafts are generally expensive and so are affordable for detailed studies of small areas requiring temporal series information. For these situations, the new lightweight UAV-based technology can be a viable and cost effective alternative. This work deals with the development and evaluation of a low cost mapping platform composed by a LASER scanning system boarded in a small UAV, highlighting the steps of integration and synchronization of the LASER scanning system with the positioning and navigation systems integrated, the acquisition and processing of data and the interpretation and analysis of the results obtained to evaluate the precision and applicability of the system in forest areas. Experimental assessment was done in two areas with different flight heights and the results were compatible with the required accuracy.

This research is linked to TEIAS project (Technology in Education Inclusion and Learning in Society: http://www.ufrgs.br/teias/). It sought to develop assistive technology (Scanning System) and a case study on the inclusion of a nonverbal child diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy enrolled in a regular school in Rio Grande do Sul. The research aimed at (1) contemplating users with motor disabilities in the use of SCALA (Alternative Communication System for Literacy of People with Autism: http://scala.ufrgs.br/siteScala/projetoScala/) by developing a scanning system as an additional means to access SCALA; and, (2) understanding the process of including a student with cerebral palsy at school whose communication is mediated by an alternative communication system. A nonverbal child with Cerebral Palsy, two teachers and her classmates (4th grade) participated in the study. The survey was developed based on historical social theory. Data were collected through systematic observations, informal interviews recorded on video and research notes. The qualitative case study comprised two phases: before and after the introduction of Alternative Communication System. The study engendered clues about the relationship between the use of alternative communication with subjects with Cerebral Palsy in the school context. Results show that although cerebral palsy imposes limits to body movements, it is possible to make social inclusion feasible for nonverbal people with Cerebral Palsy and to develop possibilities for social inclusion, especially through the use of new technologies for alternative communication which made interaction possible among a network of people (teachers, family, community) and institutions interested in giving visibility to diversity.
