Gender Performativity and Motherhood in Coraline / Genusperformativitet och moderskap i Coraline

Coraline by Neil Gaiman has several characters who in many ways break gender norms. The main protagonist of the novel, Coraline, acts more in accordance with masculine gender norms, and the mother figures are mothers who do not fully conform to the traditional mother role. The purpose of this study is to look at how Coraline and the mother figures perform their gender, and in which ways this breaks with or aligns with traditional gender norms. The analytical approach is based on Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, and on masculine and feminine gender schemas defined by John Stephens. For the analysis of motherhood, gender performativity has also been used, and works by Adrienne Rich and Einat Natalie Palkovich. This study shows that the protagonists challenge traditional gender role norms of masculinity and femininity, whereof motherhood is part. The study also shows that there is a lack of female role models for the young protagonist, and that acting according to masculine gender norms is desirable and necessary in the novel. But for the mothers, breaking gender norms is undesirable, dangerous, and even punished. A conclusion of the study is that even though Coraline appears to be a feminist novel, the underlying message is not entirely so.

How Well Do Horse Industry Members Interpret and Apply Animal Behavior and Welfare Concepts?

<p>Misunderstanding or misinterpreting specific animal behavior and welfare terminology, as well as principles of learning theory, may influence an individual’s perceptions of horse behavior. This error could potentially result in unnecessary applications of horse training principles and/or human interventions, which could potentially worsen the behavior or situation, leading to unnecessary welfare problems. </p><p>The purpose of this dissertation was to explore interpretations and understandings of specific animal behavior and welfare terminology, and learning theory principles, as applied to horses, among adults within the horse industry. Chapters 1 and 2 introduced, summarized, and linked the connection between horse behavior, horse welfare, learning theory, and schema theory. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 each pilot-tested an online survey that was completed at the convenience of each participant to explore these interpretations and understandings. Chapter 3 (n = 46) utilized a survey containing general demographic questions, psychographic questions related to horse industry involvement, five videos of horse-human interactions (each with corresponding heart rate, HR, data), and 11 learning theory scenarios. Chapter 4 (n = 21) used a survey containing general demographic questions and five videos of various human-horse interactions, including the same five videos with horse HR information included. Using results from Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, further investigation of how individuals interpret and understand specific animal behavior and welfare terminology, and learning theory principles, as applied to horses was explored across a larger sample of adults within the horse industry. Chapter 5 (n = 1,145) utilized the same survey instrument as Chapter 3 among a more robust sample of adults within the horse industry. </p><p>Across all three studies, the main results suggest that although participants demonstrated a high level of agreement between each other when identifying fear, stress, and reactivity to describe a horse’s behavior, participants could not correctly define fear, stress, reactivity, or principles of learning theory, as related to horses. They also could not connect these states to an important physiological factor, i.e., HR, when identifying these states. Results across all three studies suggest that most participant demographics (such as age, gender, or race) did not influence participants’ abilities to correctly identify or define fear, stress, reactivity, or learning theory principles. Similarly, results from Chapters 3 and 5 suggest that most participant psychographics, such as horse ownership, or level of involvement with horses, did not affect ability to correctly identify key horse behaviors related to fear, stress, and reactivity, or understanding of learning theory principles, or ability to correctly define these states and principles. </p><p> Overall, this dissertation identified the need for additional education when it comes to clearly defining specific states such as fear, stress, and reactivity for individuals across the horse industry. Additional psychographic factors, such as an individual’s specific role or niche in the industry, or an individuals’ overall view of horses, should be further explored.</p>

Why Can't Zelda Save Herself? How the Damsel in Distress Trope Affects Video Game Players

Research has unearthed an abundance of objectification and hypersexualization of female characters within video games. However, the recurring element of the damsel in distress trope is also harmful to the medium. This cliché of a helpless princess in need of a man to save her is a recurring element of The Legend of Zelda series. This experimental design tested the effects of a prototypical œsave the princess mission on players agreement to sexist statements on gender roles, objectification, and female dependency, and examined the factors of self-efficacy and gamer status as potential mediators. Participants played a modified version of a classic Legend of Zelda game, where the genders of the hero protagonist and damsel are manipulated. This 2 x 2 study included male and female heroes rescuing male and female victims in the four different cells. Immediately following the experiment, participants then took a post-test survey to gauge if there was any difference on their agreement to sexist statements. These results were also compared to their previous responses on their self-efficacy scores and their gamer status.

In what ways and under what circumstances can a movie be a resource for individuals and their thoughts about existential matters? This central research question has been investigated using a both quantitative and qualitative approach. First, a questionnaire was distributed amongst 179 Swedish students to provide a preliminary overview of film habits. The questionnaire was also used as a tool for selecting respondents to individual interviews. Second, thirteen interviews were conducted, with viewers choosing their favourite movie of all time. In the study socio-cognitive theory and a schema-based theoretical tool is adopted to analyze how different viewers make use of movies as cultural products in an interplay between culture and cognition in three contexts; a socio-historic process, a socio-cultural interaction with the world and inner psychological processes. Summarizing the interviews some existential matters dominated. Matters of immanent orientation were in the foreground. Transcendental questions received much less attention. Summarizing the schema-based theoretical question, assessing which cognitive schema structures the narratives were processed through, the study found an emphasis on a combination of two main cognitive structures, person schema and self schema. Detailed person schematic cognitive processes about fictitious characters on the screen and their role model behaviour were combined by the respondents with dynamic cross-references to detailed self schematic introspections about their own characteristics, related to existential matters at some very specific moments in their lives. The viewers in the study seem to be inspired by movies as a mediated cultural resource, promoting the development of a personal moral framework with references to values deeply fostered by a humanistic tradition. It is argued that these findings support theories discussing individualised meaning making, developing ‘self-expression values’ and ‘altruistic individualism’ in contemporary western society.

The study specifically aimed at determining whether cultural background had any effect on comprehension of English texts by second language learners and whether the second language learners’ cultural background could help them comprehend unfamiliar texts. The background of the study in this mini dissertation was followed by the discussion on the literature available on this topic. This study followed a case study design which utilized 89 respondents from the Further Education and Training band of a rural secondary school in the north of Limpopo province. Data was obtained through the completion of questionnaires and answering of questions from a comprehension test based on English culture. The findings showed that there was no total comprehension of the text by learners who use English as a second language. Learners of English as a second language need to possess specific cultural schemata to comprehend texts that are unfamiliar to them. This study was informed by the schema theory. With the continuation of Swedish Armed Forces personnel deployed in international service and the increase of national defence focus with new units being created, the average age of cadets enrolling in officers school is decreasing. Studies have previously shown that ethics and morals are linked to cognitive development, and cognitive development linked to age and education. The Neo-Kohlbergian Schema theory defines three general schemas of ethical and moral decision making. Where Postconventional schema is considered most beneficial for military officers, but the military culture seems to promote the Maintaining norms schema. This study is examining the regulating documents from the statute from the government, the program directions from the university, to individual courses programs and descriptions. In order to examine how the ethics and moral education in the Swedish officers school relates to the Neo-Kohlbergian schema theory. The study concludes that the education promotes both the Maintaining norms and Postconventional schemas rather equally with some aspects tending more to the maintaining norms schema while other tends more to the postconventional schema. Meaning that the cadets are given multiple tools to combat ethical and moral dilemmas, but by not focusing on one schema the speed in decision making is halted.

Cognitive theory a qualitative comparison of the George W. Bush administration and the Barack H.Obama administration

Although Republicans and Democrats frequently disagree ideologically, the leaders of both parties share one commonality in particular--they inevitably make flawed judgments. To adequately understand the extent to which psychological filters act as a fundamental factor in decision making, this thesis shall analyze current political events and observe how partisans within both administrations deal with information incompatible with their own values and beliefs. Specifically referencing the war in Iraq, weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), civil unrest, national security, the national economic climate, and the housing market, this study examines the way leaders deal differently with conflicting information. Although all subjects in the latter shall be discussed, the primary focus is directed towards weapons of mass destruction during the Bush administration and the economic climate during the Obama administration. During their presidencies, both administrations faced different circumstances and congruently possessed different ideologies in respect of how to resolve current problems. Therefore, both President Obama and Bush shall equally be observed in order to adequately compare the extent to which each succumbs to cognitive biases when faced with dissonant information. In addition, groupthink theory, schema theory, and self-justification shall be discussed as complimentary forces which impair political members' decisions. Overall, qualitatively assessing both Republican and Democratic parties in one comprehensive examination breaks the bounds of usual political science studies because both partisans are linked more by their similarities than differences.
