Managing communication to strengthen educator-parent partnerships at selected public secondary schools in the Umbumbulu Circuit, KwaZulu-NatalSibisi, Rudolph Ntuthuko 02 1900 (has links)
National legislation such as South African Schools Act, No. 84 of 1996 introduced important reforms impacting on school and parent communication. It mandated the establishment of school governing bodies in all schools to ensure that parents participate in their schools and to open an effective way of communication between educators and parents. However, the literature study established that in some schools, mostly the historically disadvantaged black schools, communication between educators and parents is still very poor and mostly ineffective.
This study examined the role of the school principals in managing effective communication between educators and parents at schools to ensure that effective partnerships between educators and parents are achieved.
A qualitative investigation in two public secondary schools in the Umbumbulu Circuit, KwaZulu-Natal was done. Data were gathered by means of in-depth interviews with the principals of each school, and focus group interviews with the educators and parents of each school and document analysis.
The findings revealed the following: relationship between educators and parents is still very poor in some schools, the communication between educators and parents is still ineffective, there is still a lack of parental involvement in some schools, and most schools do not have policies on effective management of communication and comprehensive programmes on parental involvement.
The study recommends that principals need to be empowered to effectively manage communication in their schools to ensure effective partnerships between educators and parents, and schools should design their own training programmes conducted by principals or specialists for parents on the importance of parental involvement in the education of their children. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Designing an instructional leadership framework for underperforming secondary schools in the Free State ProvinceThejane, Emmanuel Ntele 08 1900 (has links)
The challenge facing principals currently is to revisit their role to improve external examination results in the Republic of South Africa. Almost all schools in the Free State, in particular those in rural areas such as the Thabo Mofutsanyana Education District; the Xhariep Education District; part of the Motheo Education District (e.g. Botshabelo and Thaba-Nchu) and most urban areas, such as the Lejweleputswa Education District and the Fezile Dabi Education District, have schools which have had poor examination results for the past 20 years.
To answer the challenges currently facing principals in the Free State, this research used a qualitative research framework and methodology to articulate research questions and arrive at constructive and instructive models to reveal and close the gaps between performing and underperforming secondary schools in the province.
A particular group of principals was chosen, influenced by the performance and underperformance of their schools in the various education districts in the province. Research findings from unstructured interviews with doctoral candidates, and research on China, Finland and Singapore’s education systems with special reference to instructional leadership were conducted. The doctoral candidates’ ideas were confirmed by practical unstructured interviews with Sekgutlong and Beacon high school principals who visited Singapore with the MEC of the Free State Department of Education. In plenary and parallel encounters with principals of secondary schools in the Free State, it emerged that rote learning is prevalent in the Free State secondary schools. Therefore, was resolved by the majority of the principals that critical postmodern instructional leadership should be recommended as an instructional methodology to usher in critical thinking, innovation, creativity and self-reliance in Free State education. In addition, this will close the gap between performing and underperforming secondary schools. Finally, grounded postmodern instructional leadership as a leadership strategy will assist a contemporary secondary school learner’s generation to cope with the academic requirements of tertiary education. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. The aim of this study is to investigate the role played by parents in improving discipline in rural secondary schools, particularly those in the Kgakotlou Circuit of the Capricorn district. The problem is investigated using a literature study and empirical investigation with school management teams, teachers and the parents of learners in four secondary schools in the Kgakotlou circuit.
The literature review explores the development of parental involvement in education during the pre-apartheid, apartheid and post-apartheid eras. The benefits of parental involvement and barriers thereto are also explored as well as the management of parental involvement. The empirical study is done qualitatively and data is collected face-to-face from the participants during interviews. The interview questions examine the extent to which parents are involved in their children’s education, school policies on parental involvement, communication between parents and educators and the duties of the school governing bodies. The findings indicate that some of the parents are willing to participate in their children’s schoolwork, but do not know how to achieve this. Schools do not create enough opportunities for parental involvement.
Based on the literature review and empirical investigation, recommendations are made for school management teams, educators, and parents. The school management teams should design parental involvement plans according to their schools’ unique characteristics. Educators are urged to guide parents as they are more knowledgeable. Investigating teachers' perceptions of integrated quality management system effectiveness on teaching and learning in a rural secondary schoolSekgale, Ngatane Zachariah 03 1900 (has links)
In the quest for education transformation, the South African government employed Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) in the belief that if teachers were appraised and developed, their performances would be enhanced and the quality of education would be improved.
However, teachers had different views and experiences of the effectiveness of IQMS in their work stations. Consequently, the author was interested in “Investigating teachers’ perceptions of Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) effectiveness on teaching and learning in a rural secondary school”. The investigation was conducted using face to face interviews and document analysis.
This study’s findings indicated that IQMS was introduced as a matter of policy compliance, as shown by many teachers’ misunderstandings of its concept.
The findings of this study will help to improve IQMS effectiveness or to undertake further research on the feasibility, viability and practicability of IQMS and/or alternatively, the development of a new appraisal system. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. This study aims to determine how School Management Teams (SMTs) are managing the issue of violence in their schools. Specifically, it sought to understand the different management strategies being used and whether SMTs have experienced challenges in implementing these strategies. Methodologically, the study sampled School Management Teams and teachers who are in schools of the Tshwane West Area using a non-probability sampling technique to collect information regarding the issue of violence management in schools using structured interviews. The interviews delved deeply into the psychological effects of violence, its prevention and some legal implications of managing violence in schools. Using thematic analysis, data collected was analysed and interpreted within the theoretical lenses of school violence. The study reached a number of conclusions and made several recommendations. In summary, violence in school requires urgent attention, SMTs and teachers are still struggling to curb an increasing number of sexual assaults and deaths as a result of violent activities in their schools. DEd (Educational Management) / The purpose of this study was to investigate the leadership role of principals in creating a culture of teaching and learning in rural public schools of Mopani District, Limpopo Province. The performance of learners below the expected standards in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, despite, massive resources that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is providing annually to schools to improve quality of teaching and learning, has raised public concern. When seeking answers to these schools’ dysfunctionality, focus, however, was laid on the leadership role of school principals in some rural public schools of Mopani District, Limpopo Province. The study was guided by Hersey and Blanchard Situational Leadership theory, complemented by Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. This study was conceptualised within the interpretive paradigm, subsumed under a qualitative research approach. A qualitative case study was used with four rural public high schools. A total of sixteen participants were purposefully selected, made up of four school principals, four deputy principals and eight Heads of Departments (HoDs). Research data were gathered through individual interviews, observations and documents analysis. Data from interviews were thematically analysed, and data from documents and observations were analysed descriptively in words. Findings from interviews revealed that school principals do not monitor and support curriculum implementation. In supporting the findings from interviews, the documents analysed revealed the absence of an administered class-visits monitoring-tool. Data from the observations revealed that schools were without vision and mission statements and had inadequate resources. The study recommended principals to monitor and support curriculum implementation, and develop staff professionally. Suggestions for further study were provided. A proposed model of Action-Based COTL was developed to assist school principals in creating a COTL in schools. / NRF

The aim of this study was to investigate and examine the management and leadership skills that are needed for managing community and parent partnership in the Ilembe District of the KwaZulu-Natal province. The study sought to determine how ineffective management and leadership of parent partnership in rural schools can be detrimental to school, learners, parents and the community at large. The literature study investigated existing theories, programmes, management and leadershipof parental participation and partnership. The theoretical frameworks that informed this study were Epstein’s theories of overlapping sphere and her typology of parentalinvolvement. These frameworks emerging from the review of literatureprovided an expressive perspective for the interpretation of data and recommendations in the final chapter of the study.The study used aqualitative methodologyapproach with a case studyresearch design. This was deemed appropriate as data wascollectedthrough the medium of semi-structured individual interviews andfield notes with 15 participants,and data were analysed using content analysis. The findings revealed that in most schools, ineffective management and leadership of parental participation exist through relationship limitation between the schools and the parents and the community. The study established that ineffective leadership and management of parental, family and community participation revolve around issues like indifferentattitudes of parents, poor communication and a lack ofcordial relationship between parents and the schools. successful performance for the individual and the organisation, prompting the question:
What can be done to facilitate self-leadership within nurse educators in nursing education
institutions? The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive sequential mixed-methods study
was to understand the self-leadership within nurse educators in order to develop
guidelines that could facilitate their self-leadership. The integrative literature review,
qualitative and quantitative data were integrated and used to develop and validate
guidelines that could facilitate self-leadership in nurse educators. Phase 1 (subphase 1)
consisted of an integrative literature review that explored and described the concept of
self-leadership in nurse educators. In Phase 1 (subphase 2), semi-structured focus group
interviews were conducted with purposively selected nurse educators from three
sampling units, namely a private nursing school, nursing college and university-based
nursing departments in two of the nine provinces in South Africa to explore the nurse
educators’ perception of their self-leadership, and how self-leadership could be facilitated
in a nursing education institution. Phase 2 of the study entailed developing a structured
questionnaire based on the findings of Phase 1. In Phase 2, quantitative data were
collected from nurse educators appointed at the remaining nursing education institutions
in the two provinces which were not selected for the qualitative phase of the study. This
phase was aimed at determining and describing the nurse educators’ (n=265) perceptions
on their self-leadership practices in a nursing education institution, using a selfadministered questionnaire. For the integrative literature review, the method of data
analysis as outlined by Miles and Huberman was used (Whittemore & Knafl 2005:550–
552). The qualitative data were analysed according to Tesch’s protocol of data analysis.
The themes that emerged were perceptions of self-leadership in nurse educators;
engagement in self-leadership activities; motivational factors in self-leadership; and
facilitation of self-leadership in nurse educators. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods (SPSS version 25). The participants gave their perceptions on 11 composite constructs. Nurse educators agreed the most on natural
reward, intrinsic motivation, role modelling and shared leadership but agreed less with
management support and positive self-talk. To establish rigour, the researcher utilised
diverse empirical and theoretical sources as data sources, and applied strategies to
ensure trustworthiness and performed validity and reliability tests. The findings of both
Phase 1 and 2 were integrated to develop and validate guidelines to facilitate the self-leadership in nurse educators. Twelve guidelines were developed and were validated by field experts. The guidelines propose recommendations for nurse educators and the
management of the nursing education institution, as well as other associated

Understanding bullying in three inclusive secondary schools in Johannesburg : a wellness perspectiveMushambi, Charles 11 1900 (has links)
This research is about bullying in schools. The aim of the study was to investigate how
the problem of bullying is understood in schools, its causes, types, effects, general
patterns and strategies to curb this bullying problem in schools derived from the bioecological theory, through interviewing teachers, learners and principals at secondary
school level.
Qualitative approach and a case study were used. This qualitative research was
conducted at three inclusive secondary schools in Johannesburg North District in
Gauteng province in South Africa through engaging eighteen learners in Grade Eleven
and Twelve in focus groups. One focus group composed of six learners was conducted
at each of three participating schools. Nine teachers, three from each of the three
participating schools were involved in semi- structured interviews to solicit data on how
they understand bullying, its causes, types, effects, general patterns and ways of
addressing bullying in schools. Three principals, one from each of the selected schools
also participated in this study. All the participants participated in this research through
invitation to voluntary participation after being made aware of the purposes of the study
by the researcher. Thus, a purposive sample of three principals, nine teachers and
eighteen learners was used by the researcher. Semi- structured interviews and focus
group interviews were used as research instruments in this study. Teachers and
principals were engaged in semi- structured interviews and learners were involved in
focus group interviews. The bio- ecological theory and the wellness theory were used
as theoretical frameworks in this research to understand bullying, its causes, types,
effects and general patterns, so as to come up with strategies to address bullying that
target the learners’ social contexts rather than the learners themselves as is with the
case with the psychological model.
Before conducting this research, the researcher obtained ethics clearance from the
University of South Africa’s ethics committee, clearance was also obtained from
Gauteng Department of, clearance from Johannesburg North District as well as
acceptance letters from participating inclusive secondary schools.
The researcher also obtained assent from the eighteen Grade eleven and twelve
learners who participated in this study. Assent was also obtained from parents of learners who participated in this research. Consent was also obtained from the nine
teachers and three principals who participated in this research.
After conducting focus group discussions and semi- structured interviews with
teachers and principals, the researcher transcribed data verbatim for the purposes of
analysing it. After transcribing data, it was colour coded, then categorised and
categories were further fused into themes which were discussed in chapter five in
relation to literature reviewed in chapter two.
Some interesting findings were discovered in this research. Lack of resources,
violence and violent video games were found to be causes of bullying in schools.
‘Gangsterism’ and peer influence were said to be general patterns of bullying in
schools. Low academic performance and absenteeism were said to be effects of
bullying in schools. Physical bullying, verbal bullying, emotional bullying, social
bullying, sexual bullying, teacher- learner bullying, learner to learner bullying, gender
based bullying and cyber bullying were said to be some types of bullying prevalent in
schools. Working with various stakeholders in education such as organisations like
Love Life, S.E.N.C.A, South African Police Services and Community Based Youth
Centres as well as other professionals like social workers, psychologists and specialist
teachers was found to be helpful address bullying in schools. Findings also indicated
that involving parents and community leaders in school activities assist to address
bullying in schools. Installing cameras and suggestion boxes, reporting all forms of
bullying installing cameras, bullying awareness campaigns, training staff and having
bullying lessons in the school timetable were mentioned effective methods of
eradicating all forms of bullying in all schools.
However, the study recommends that, teachers and principals be staff developed on
issues related to how bullying is understood in schools in relation to its causes, types,
