Flávio Marques Vicari 12 March 2009 (has links)
Existing examples of clusters in the whole world prove the effectiveness of the enterprise organization in environment of geographic concentration. Adopting a model of intervention in clusters, the government normally establishes a sequence of activities that starts by the diagnosis and culminates in joint actions and public policies. However, when analyzing the case studies found in literature, are verified that the most adopted method of diagnosis are not guided to the pillars that can support development of cluster. This stimulated the search of a reply to the questions: Which are the factors that influence cluster development? How to elaborate a script of diagnosis guided from these factors? Initially 11 factors that influence cluster development had been found and established a script with questions for the diagnosis of these factors. To analyze the validity of these factors and its application for the cluster diagnosis, a quantitative and qualitative field research was done. In the field research, techniques of participant comment were adopted and interviews were done using semi structuralized questionnaires. The procedure is case study, done in mechanical and metal cluster of Sertãozinho. Were analyzed the relation between the factors and cluster development, as well as the capacity of the instrument in evaluating each factor correctly. In the end of the application, the script had been composed for 10 factors: cooperation; management; competition; suppliers; support and government institutions; people and knowledge; local infrastructure; Innovation; entrepreneurship energy; and communitarian culture. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of a tool that can support the government in its pretension to create joint actions and public policies for the cluster development.

An investigation into the use of linguistic context in cursive script recognition by computer

Brammall, Neil Howard January 1999 (has links)
The automatic recognition of hand-written text has been a goal for over thirty five years. The highly ambiguous nature of cursive writing (with high variability between not only different writers, but even between different samples from the same writer), means that systems based only on visual information are prone to errors. It is suggested that the application of linguistic knowledge to the recognition task may improve recognition accuracy. If a low-level (pattern recognition based) recogniser produces a candidate lattice (i.e. a directed graph giving a number of alternatives at each word position in a sentence), then linguistic knowledge can be used to find the 'best' path through the lattice. There are many forms of linguistic knowledge that may be used to this end. This thesis looks specifically at the use of collocation as a source of linguistic knowledge. Collocation describes the statistical tendency of certain words to co-occur in a language, within a defined range. It is suggested that this tendency may be exploited to aid automatic text recognition. The construction and use of a post-processing system incorporating collocational knowledge is described, as are a number of experiments designed to test the effectiveness of collocation as an aid to text recognition. The results of these experiments suggest that collocational statistics may be a useful form of knowledge for this application and that further research may produce a system of real practical use.

Administration automated : How to save time by automating administrative tasks

Koudijs, Jip January 2016 (has links)

DIVING INTO ONE’S PAINFUL PAST AND DARKEST INTERNAL FEARS: THE DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESS OF THE THREAD THAT SNAPPED

Harrison, Austin Brian 01 September 2020 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OFAustin Harrison, for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre, presented on April 10, 2020, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: DIVING INTO ONE’S PAINFUL PAST AND DARKEST INTERNAL FEARS: THE DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESS OF THE THREAD THAT SNAPPEDMAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Jacob Juntunen This thesis details the development of my full-length play The Thread That Snapped from its early conception in 2019 to full production at Southern Illinois University Department of Theatre’s Christian H. Moe Theatre’s space in March 2020. In writing The Thread That Snapped, I was inspired by traumatic chapters within my life that shaped me as a human. This play, therefore, examines the unpredictable ways in which an individual is driven to insanity and the delicate thread that separates sanity and insanity. From this play comes a study into the human condition and how society and relationships shape who we become n life. Chapter One includes a statement of the project, the origin, and development of the script, initial structure and plot considerations for the script, research that impacted the creation of the script, character development, and tools for self-evaluation. Chapter Two covers the pre-writing process, feedback from my writing partner, notes from my advisor, Jacob Juntunen, and the director, Susan Patrick Benson, about the script’s development and an overall description of the play’s progression through drafts. Chapter Three describes the design meetings held in preparation for the production of The Thread That Snapped. Chapter Four details the audition and casting process as well as rehearsals for the piece. Chapter Five evaluates The Thread That Snapped’s production, describes ideas for future productions of the piece as well as possible revisions. Chapter Six concludes the thesis by tracking my progression in the playwriting program over the past three years. It includes my writing growth in terms of structure and developing my artistic voice. It also discusses my professional development over the time in the program, as well as the evolution of my teaching practice. I have also included in the thesis the production script of The Thread That Snapped.

Secure SNMP-Based Network Management in Low Bandwidth Networks

Hia, Henry Erik 04 May 2001 (has links)
This research focuses on developing a secure, SNMP-based network management system specifically tailored for deployment in internetworks that rely on low-bandwidth backbone networks. The network management system developed uses a two-level hierarchy of network management applications consisting of one top-level management application communicating with several mid-level management applications strategically distributed throughout the internetwork. Mid-level management applications conduct routine monitoring chores on behalf of the top-level management application and report results in a way that makes intelligent use of the limited bandwidth available on the backbone network. The security framework is based on using SNMPv2c over IPSec. This research shows that the other security alternative considered, SNMPv3, consumes as much as 24 percent more network capacity than SNMPv2c over IPSec. The management framework is based on the Management by Delegation (MbD) model and is implemented using the IETF DISMAN Script MIB. This research demonstrates that the MbD-based management framework consumes only 2 percent of the network capacity required by the traditional, centralized management scheme. / Master of Science

DysFunktional? Breakin' the Bricks and Shattering the Myths of African American Women

McKinley, Teresa M 01 September 2020 (has links)
This thesis details the development of the full-length play, DyFuNkTioNal? from conception to the prewriting to full production over the course of the 2017-2020 school year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. My intentions for writing this play was motivated by six thoughts: (1) the lack of interest within the Carbondale community to provide real opportunities for ethnic groups (in particular, African American preteens and teenagers) to participate in theatrical expression and other art forms that are introduced via art programs; (2) lack of motivation of the African-American teens to participate in the programs that the city of Carbondale provided; (3) my interest in Black feminist theory, which became popular in the 1960s as a response to the racism of the feminist movement and sexism of the Civil Rights Movement; (4) the art of graffiti as it slowly evolved from intolerance to tolerance of females, which leads to the tapping of the “glass ceiling” with the goal to shatter it in the near future; (5) to encourage and educate Black females no matter what age to realize and honor their personal value within society; and (6) to enlightened the viewer of issues regarding African American females whose plight is far different from their white counterparts. As explained by Princeton Professor Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor, “Black women’s experiences cannot be reduced to either race or gender but have to be understood on their own terms” (Smith, timeline.com, 2018). As the Combahee River Collective Statement read, “We realize that the only people who care enough about us to work consistently for our liberation is us.” (Smith, timeline.com, 2018)During the writing of the play, I was inspired by the words of Erykah Badu’s song Bag Lady, which ask women to “hold the mirrors to ourselves and be able to accept that we need work if we expect to catch the buses in our lives. The good parent bus, the education bus, the decent job bus, the healthy self-image bus all requires self-reflection and sometimes that doesn't sound like a bra-burning, ball-busting anthem” (Roricka, soulbounce.com, 2010). Therefore, this led to the question, would I be able to honestly create, a play that could positively change the viewer’s perception on the plight of African American women’s struggles of inequality while existing in a patriarchal and racist world?

When is it rape? The role of rape and seduction scripts

Littleton, Heather Leigh 07 May 2001 (has links)
Accompanying the high prevalence of rape among college women is a high prevalence of unacknowledged rape, or women who have been raped who do not label it as such. The current studies explore one theory which may help account for unacknowledged rape, script theory. Specifically, it may be that individuals have scripts for rape and seduction which overlap on a number dimensions, which may lead certain incidents of rape to be labeled seduction. Three studies were conducted to test the possible role of scripts in labeling an incident rape or not. In study 1, unique and overlapping elements of undergraduates' rape and seduction scripts were identified using a free-writing task and a questionnaire. In study 2, an ambiguous sexual scenario was developed. In study 3, script salience was manipulated by labeling the ambiguous scenario as either rape or seduction. This manipulation had little effect on participants' characterization of the scenario. However, results of internal analyses suggested that what script was activated affected participants' beliefs about the outcome of the scenario for the woman as well as their recall for the elements of the scenario. Implications of the results for the phenomenon of unacknowledged rape are discussed. / Master of Science

Croissance de la céramique eutectique Al₂O₃-YAG-ZrO₂∶Y et étude de la microstructure Chinese Script / Al₂O₃-YAG-ZrO₂∶Y eutectic ceramic growth and study of the Chinese Script microstructure

Cherif, Maya 15 September 2016 (has links)
These last decades, directionally solidified eutectic oxides have drawn attention and are seen as an alternative to Ni based superalloys for the development of high temperature turbine blades. Indeed, their 3D entangled and complex microstructure, called Chinese Script and the high quality of the interphases provide a thermal stability and mechanical properties, creep and strength, constant up to 1973 K.Our study focuses on the directional solidification of an alumina-based ternary eutectic alloy. The work is based on two approaches, experimental and modeling, in order to understand two inherent aspects of this alloy morphology: -The Chinese Script microstructure composed of irregular entangled lamellas of the two major phases Al2O3 and YAG and the third phase ZrO2:Y. - Colonies formation due to the presence of an impurity causing an interface destabilization.Experiments have been performed by different growth techniques: EFG, Bridgman and Micro-Pulling down exploring a large range of growth conditions. The modeling of these processes on a commercial software COMSOL gave the precise knowledge of the growth rate and the temperature gradient, needed for the study of the growth mechanisms. In the meanwhile, samples’ composition has been confronted to the phases equilibrium diagram calculated by the CALPHAD method.A characterization route of the microstructures obtained for different growth conditions has been set up in order to describe this irregular eutectic. Thus, the influence of speed and temperature gradient have been studied, showing identical growth behavior with eutectic metals. Moreover, it appears that this eutectic structure is composed of two single crystals: Al2O3 and YAG and a finely dispersed particles of ZrO2:Y.Finally, a physico-chemical model is presented, based on classical models in the case of metallic eutectics, in order to describe the formation of this microstructure and the appearance of colonies at the eutectic composition. The model is confirmed by the experimental observations. Peculiarities of the ceramic eutectic growth, with respect to metallic eutectics, are discussed.Besides, a way to control the microstructure through an electric field is presented. Indeed, by using the ionic property of the molten material, applying an electric field allows to modify ions transport and thus influences the diffusion phenomena at the origin of the microstructure.
